runDisney: Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge

During the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend, runDisney holds Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge. This is for runners who don't feel like the marathon is enough for them and want to run 39.3 miles in two days. Goofy is the perfect name for this!

This challenge began in 2006, which was the first year that the half and full marathons were held on separate days. Many of the participants were interested in running both races, which prompted Disney to make an official challenge out of it. Runners not only receive the Donald medal for the half marathon and the Mickey medal for the full marathon, but they get the coveted Goofy medal. That's three times the Disney bling! Now it's starting to sound more interesting...

This past January, the race sold out long before Marathon Weekend. In order to participate, you must register for Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge as the number of participants are limited. If you register for the two races separately, you will not be eligible for the Goofy bling. 2013 Marathon Weekend is shaping up to be just as popular as the challenge is already half full.

While I currently think that most of the people participating in this challenge truly are goofy, they are also incredibly inspiring. I know how sore I was after the Princess Half Marathon and I couldn't even imagine doing it again, let alone double the distance, the next day! But it has now become a goal of mine. I want to be goofy one day and I most certainly want all that bling!

So, are you a goofy runner? Would you ever consider Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge? Who's with me for 2014?

Any tips for a beginner runner? I've only been running about a month but I'm going to do the 5K at the Wine and Dine festival in November. Someday I hope to conquer the Goofy. Someday.

Kristen, that IS some serious running!!

Spook, signing up for your first race is the hardest part and it looks like you've already done that! The more you train, the easier it will get. Those first few months are the worst, but you need to just push though it...there truly is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Check out Jeff Galloway's training methods. You can find them over on the runDisney site. I use the run/walk method for my races and they have helped so many people cross the finish line.
Hope to see you in November!

What ratio of the run walk method do you use during races? I've heard that when you're just starting out you should do 2 minute run/ 5 minute walk.

Thank you for your comments it is the very least I can do for all those coaerguous and determined souls out there on the marathon course. Keep going out that door on excellent AND terrible days; in fantastic AND poor weather. When you cross the end line of a marathon, it will be one moment that you can take sole ownership. Only you can train all those miles and only you can complete those 26.2 miles it is up to you and I know you can accomplish it. BEST OF LUCK!

I plan on going Goofy in 2014. It will be my first marathon. I am nervous, but with proper training I know I can do it. I am considering going Dopey in 2014, which means I will do the 5k as well.

I did the Goofy in 2006 along with the 5K. We all called it, "Beyond Goofy". We had so much fun. Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I even had a pulled psoas muscle. Now that was "Dopey".....LOL

What are the 2014 dates?

2014 dates won't be released until after the 2013 race. However, it is roughly the same weekend every year so if you take a look at the calendar and compare you can make a rough guess.

I will be joining you for Goofy 2014! I ran it in 2008 (it was my 1st half marathon and my 1st marathon...yup, really Goofy!), and I can't wait to run it again!

Hi Andy! Information for the 2014 Race hasn't been posted yet, so you're still good. runDisney seems to be running a little behind on updating dates on their website.
