Updates on the 2014 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend

Registration for the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend opened at noon on April 9, and within hours the brand new Walt Disney World 10K was sold out. In addition to the 10K, the Family Fun Run 5K is also sold out. At press time the Dopey Challenge was at 99 percent capacity.

WDW Marathon Weekend Registration Opens

Today is the day runDisney fans. Registration for the 2014 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend begins! Next year not only will runners find the encouragement and entertainment along a thrilling course that they have come to know and love with a runDisney race, but a whole slew of enhancements have been added!

Disney Helps Clean The World

Back in 2010, Disney World became a part of Clean the World, a central Florida organization which collects, sanitizes and repackages unused, discarded hotel soaps and shampoos before distributing them to poverty-stricken nations across the globe.

In the two years since, some 53 tons (or 565,509 bars) of soap have been collected by Disney resorts. In addition, Disney has collected over 33 tons of shampoo, conditioner and lotion for distribution.

The cleanliness items have been distrubted locally in homeless and domestic abuse shelters in the Orlando area as well as worldwide.

Disney Parks Expansions and Additions Exceed $3 Billion

When Disney improves upon its parks, it improves. The company has surpassed the $3 billion mark in its park additions and expansions - a first in its history. To give an idea of where all that moolah is going, here is a breakdown of recent work at Disney parks worldwide:

  • Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World: The Fantasyland expansion, the largest in the park's four decade history, will top out around $425 million when the construction is done.

Taxi Cab Rates Increase In Orlando

Cab fare in Orlando just got a little steeper as the City Council voted this past Monday to increase rates by 9 percent. Though this isn't directly involving the happiest place on earth, there are Disney World guests that do utilize cab services when visiting central Florida.

While the fare increase applies only to the city of Orlando, Mears Transportation owns around half of the taxi cabs servicing in and around the city. A spokesperson for that company said Mears plans to adhere to the rate increase throughout the Orlando area.

Spotlight on a Disney Santa

Luther Hunter, a seventy-one-year-old hailing from Gastonia, North Carolina, will spend this Christmas playing Santa in Walt Disney World - just as he has for the past two decades. This year marks Hunter's twenty-first appearance as Santa at the happiest place on earth.

Hunter got the job as the jolly man in red at Disney after meeting a casting director in a toy store in which he was playing Santa. He told the director it had been his dream to be St. Nick at Disney World and was later hired for that very job.

Magic Kingdom's Cinderella's Holiday Wish Show To Start November 4

With the Halloween season wrapping up, the folks at Disney World are starting to gear up for the Christmas holiday. Returning to the Magic Kingom this Friday is the popular Cinderella's Holiday Wish Stage Show.

$1 Million in Fradulent Disney Tickets Confiscated

Discount park tickets are a big business around Orlando, and one is often left wondering how legit some of those tickets are. We now know that at least some of those tickets are fradulent, thanks to a recent sting conducted along U.S. Highway 192 in Kissimmee, Florida.

Some 3,617 tickets for Disney World, Universal Studios and Sea World were confiscated during the sting. The estimated cost? Over $1 million.

Disney Sued For Negligence In Water Craft Collision

An English woman has sued Disney for negligence following the crash of her rented watercraft with a ferry.

Both Michael and Barbara Wormald were in a "Sea Raycer" two-seater watercraft rented from Cap'n Jack's Marina in Downtown Disney when it collided with a ferry. Mr. Wormald was driving the watercraft at the time of the incident, and Mrs. Wormald, the passenger, sustained a collapsed lung and fractured ribs as a result of the collision.

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Welcome New Disney Ambassadors

For 50 years the Disney Ambassador Program has been a tradition within the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

The first Disney Ambassador, Julie Reihm Casaletto, was hand-picked by Walt Disney and introduced during the 10th anniversary of Disneyland. The ambassadors represent the theme parks in their community and around the world, in addition to hosting VIP guests.

Every night, the fireworks explode above Cinderella Castle and the guests watching in awe might easily forget that they are actually standing on the second floor of the Magic Kingdom. Below their feet, a small city is hard at work making Disney Magic possible. The entrances to the utilidors are all around us as we travel through Magic Kingdom, but because we have no need to locate them, the doors blend seamlessly into the scenery.

Walt Disney World Merchandise and Artist Events Announced for October

Fall has arrived at the Walt Disney World Resort which means Halloween parties and the Epcot Food and Wine Festival are in full swing.

This month also brings several special artist and merchandise events to the theme parks and beyond.

Guests at the Epcot Food and Wine Festival can take part in these artist appearances this month: Paola Gutierrez on October 24 at the Festival Center, Rob Kaz at the Art of Disney on October 24-26, and Michelle St. Laurent at the Art of Disney on October 30.

Walt Disney World Adding Fall Protection Safety Railings on Rooftops around the Resort

If you've visited any of the theme parks at the Walt Disney World Resort you many have noticed temporary safety railings atop many of the buildings.

According to a post at WDW News Today, Disney has started installing these temporary safety railings in an effort to meet OSHA safety regulations.

While there is no word yet on whether or not the temporary railings will be replaced with permanent fall protection railings, it is likely that Disney will at least keep the temporary railings up to satisfy OSHA regulations.
