Monorail To Get Marvel Makeover

Earlier in March, we reported that Disney CEO Bob Iger had revealed plans to incorporate Marvel characters into Disney parks in the future. We now know there is at least one solid plan to feature some these characters in Walt Disney World.

Disney recently announced plans to wrap one of Walt Disney World's monorail trains with an "Avengers" theme. Look for the Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye and Black Widow to be featured on the monorail train.

Monorail Hours Changed

The Walt Disney World monorail's hours have been changed because of work on the DVC addition at the Grand Floridian.

Guests can expect the Magic Kingdom resort loop to be closed each day from 11:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. The change started March 2nd and it is said Disney is planning to have the work done by the end of March.

NTSB Finishes Report on 2009 Monorail Accident

After nearly two-and-a-half years, the National Transportation Safety Board delivered its concluded report on the 2009 monorail accident that claimed a Disney employee's life. The fourteen page report found employee errors as well as lack of safety protocols to be the main cause of the collision of two monrail trains which claimed the life of 21-year-old Austin Wuennenberg.

Walt Disney World Gets New Monorail

WDW will soon have twelve monorail trains in its collection as they plan to add a new train to its fleet this fall.

The new train will make an even dozen monorails in the Disney collection. The last time Disney had a full twelve trains was prior to the July 2009 accident that resulted in the death of a driver. Since then, WDW has been running eleven monorails.

Disney Pares Down Monorail Hours

Disney has cut down on its monorail transportation hours this summer in an effort to give more maintenance time to the system.

Guests of Disney need to know that the monorail systems servicing Epcot and the Magic Kingdom will be shut down one hour after the parks' regular closing times. Also, it will remained closed during any of the parks' Extra Magic Hours.

These new hours of operation have already went into effect for Epcot and are set to start August 1 for the Magic Kingdom. Guests can still return to their cars and hotels from the parks via boats and buses.

Lawsuit Over Monorail Worker's Death Dismissed

A wrongful death lawsuit filed by a deceased monorail pilot's mother has been dismissed. Twenty-one-year-old Austin Wuennenberg died July 5, 2009, as the result of two monorails colliding at Disney's Ticket and Trasnportation Center.

Wuennenberg's mother filed the lawsuit against Disney last year, and accused her son's supervisior creating an unsafe situation by leaving his post. Both the family's and Disney's attorneys have said the lawsuit has been settled, but no specific details about the settlment are available.

New Monorail Job to Enhance Safety at Epcot

Stemming from a July 2009 fatal accident of Monorail driver Austin Wuennenberg, Disney has made plans to create a new Monorail position and increase pay for the trains' workers.

In the old way of doing things, the job of "monorail coordinator" had workers not only directing traffic, but also left them tasked with other duties such as employee schedules. With the creation of the new position, aptly named the "central monorail controller," workers occupying this position can concentrate specifically on directing the monorail traffic.
