Anniversary Trip Report!! finally

So we got back home from our trip on the 12th, and I can't believe it's taken me this long to get a chance to sit down and write all of this out. But here it is, the report for our long awaited and deserved anniversary trip to Disney World!

I'm going to skip the getting there bit and just say that the train wasn't bad and using the car service worked well!

SUNDAY

I had done online check-in several days before leaving and requested the 70s and lake view just because it sounded nice. We went to get our packets and check our bags, not expecting a room to be ready yet. There was no line at the desk, and the procedure went smoothly. After confirming my reservation, the CM informed me that there was not a room ready yet on the lakeside of the 70s, but she could give us a 4th floor lake view in the 60s if that was okay. I happily accepted, got our room keys, and we exited Classic Hall. It was probably about 80 degrees, and there were a dozen or so kids in the Hippie Dippy pool. We made our way past the Play-Doh jar, walked up the giant yo-yo, and found our room just around the corner. We had a gorgeous view of the lake and Art of Animation. The room was nice and clean, and our first order of business was to shower! We were so tired from not being able to sleep most of the night but too excited to rest because WE WERE IN DISNEY WORLD!!

We stopped by the food court to get our mugs for a caffeine boost. Jeff got some ice cold Coke while I loaded mine up with Nescafe and topped it with hot cocoa to mask the flavor. We took our mugs on a nice long walk around the resort, geeking out over the crazy huge statues all over the place. I really liked the Roger Rabbit, Rubix cubes, and fooseball court, but the one that really stuck out to us was the giant computer in the 90s section. The screen shows a computer running on Windows 95, and there's an ABC news story dated April 22, 1998 proclaiming the opening of Disney's Animal Kingdom! Very cool little detail.

After our walk, we left our mugs in the room, tossed our jackets into our back packs, and headed out for mini golf and to explore other resorts! Before leaving, Jeff went to the arcade to spend our games voucher, and I stopped by the front desk to ask if they had any Happy Anniversary buttons. The CM I talked with happily handed over the last ones they had, wished us a wonderful trip, and said to ask the front desk if there's anything we need assistance with. Really, all of the CMs at Pop were fantastic.

Getting to Fantasia Gardens was much easier than I expected. We caught the bus to Downtown, and one to the Boardwalk came within a few minutes. We walked over to Fantasia Gardens and signed up for a spot. We were told the wait was about 15 minutes, but it was really more like 5. The process that they have of spreading groups out works really well, and although there were a lot of people playing the course never seemed crowded. The course was fun, especially the part where the brooms spout water out of their buckets towards players. When we were done, we walked around the Boardwalk area and explored the inside of the Boardwalk Inn. We found the creepy face chairs and admired the old time theme that depicts the glory days of the Jersey Shore. It was really special to us.

Soon we were on a bus to Magic Kingdom so we could get to the monorail resorts. At this point we realized that we should take our jackets every day no matter the temperature, because some of the buses were FREEZING! Families in shorts and tank tops were huddling together to keep warm. Our first stop on the monorail was the Grand Floridian. That hotel is so swanky, very nice! We were considering getting a drink from Mizners until we realized that it was close to 3:00 and in all of the excitement we had forgotten to eat something! So we popped into Gasparilla for lunch. I had a rice and vegetable dish, and Jeff had a french dip sandwich. The food wasn't great, but it was filling and did its job of calming our tummys. We split Jeff's water and tossed my mine in the bag for later. We also each chose a cupcake, a 'smores and a pina colada, which we also saved for later snacking. This was our first realization of just how much food comes on the dining plan. Since we forgot our refillable water bottles at home, it was very convenient that we could get large bottles at meals to carry around the parks and refill if needed. After eating, we relaxed by the marina and listened to the band play in the lobby for a while. Then we headed for the monorail, but it was down. So we went back out, walked around the grounds and started leisurely following the walkway to the Poly!

It was really interesting how the scenery changed between the Grand Floridian and the Polynesian. We walked along the path between Victorian buildings, took our shoes off to walk in the sand, and suddenly we were in a tropical paradise! It was getting dark, and a whole lot of storm clouds were rolling in, but there was still a lot going on at the Poly beach. Some kids were roasting marshmallows over a fire, and there were a number of people at the volcano pool. The music was really relaxing, too! We spent a little time relaxing in hammocks and enjoying the warm sand on our feet.

Soon we were craving a drink, so it was off to the Tambu Lounge to start using some of the Disney gift cards that Jeff's mom had given us for Christmas! The lounge was pretty quiet when we got there, and our drinks came out quickly. I had a Lapu Lapu, which was delicious! I was afraid it was going to be too sweet from the pineapple juice, but the 151 gave it a nice bite. Jeff had the pina colada, his favorite cocktail. It was SO smooth and creamy, no ice chunks or anything. He said it was definitely the best one he's had. We settled in for the fourth quarter of the Redskins/Seahawks game and...well, that was painful to watch. All of a sudden a large number of people began coming in and out of the lounge area, many of them waiting on reservations at Ohana or Kona. Luckily, we had good seats to watch the rest of the game and were set on drinks.

We were getting hungry again, so it was back to Pop. That evening there were evening EMH at Magic Kingdom, so we were the only people headed back to the resort around 7. Back at Pop, we each got the Mom's Night Out special " fried chicken! This was the only meal we ate at the food court, and it was yummy! Best of all, Toy Story was playing outside by the pool, so we grabbed an outdoor table and chowed down while watching the movie. Then we went back to the room, pulled our chairs outside, and enjoyed the fireworks from Epcot! There were a few moments when it was so quiet we could actually hear some of the music! We were joined by our resort neighbors, a very nice couple from Canada. Their children had just gone to sleep, so sneaking out to watch the fireworks were in the lady's words, "a respite." We chatted for a little bit. They come to Disney once a year or so, but this was their first time staying on property. They said it was really convenient and that they were enjoying it.

But soon it was time for bed, and we were so happy to be able to get a good night's sleep, because in the morning, we were off to Magic Kingdom!!

PHOTOS!!

I have been in a few shadow casts of Rocky Horror Picture Show, so seeing this represented in the 70s section of the lobby got me really excited!

YAY!! I've been anxiously awaiting this trip report since you got back and so far it has not disappointed! I love Disney's attention to detail--that 90's computer is awesome--and the Lapu Lapu looks delicious (and HUGE!).

MONDAY

I was up and showered by 7:30 and headed to get coffee/cocoa. The guy after me had an All Stars mug, one of the old short ones. I got excited and said "Whoa, that's one of the old school mugs!" He laughed and said "Yeah, I'll stop bringing this one when they switch to real coffee!"

Jeff was awake and ready to go when I got back, so we ate a quick breakfast of cereal bars and the fruit cup I had gotten for dessert at dinner the night before. Jeff had chosen the tie-dye cheesecake, but that was stored in the fridge along with the two big cupcakes from Sunday and several Strongbows we had brought from home. We headed out to the bus stop, making a quick stop at the gift shop for an autograph book. There was a Magic Kingdom bus loading as we got in line. It was standing room and we could have gotten on, but I heard the woman behind us mention a breakfast reservation at the castle, so we offered our spot to her and her daughter. She was very grateful! It was only a couple minutes until the next one, and we still got there in time to see rope drop.

Needless to say, Jeff was REALLY excited about visiting Magic Kingdom for the first time, and I was super excited for him! I made sure that we headed straight for Adventureland so that Jeff could start the trip with the ride he was most excited about " THE JUNGLE CRUISE! I'm not kidding, he was so excited to go on Jungle Cruise, primarily because he loves puns but also because of the Weird Al song Skipper Dan. Our tour guide was named Brian, and he was really funny and into his role. After that, we walked right onto Pirates and then Big Thunder Mountain! We checked out Splash Mountain, which looked kind of creepy since it wasn't in operation, then headed over to Liberty Square, and I noted how empty the park seemed. Hall of Presidents was starting in a few minutes, so we headed inside. It was just us and a few veterans (They were wearing hats, I believe specifying that they were in Korea). I love this show, and Jeff was really into the animatronics. After the show, we headed to the Haunted Mansion. The wait time was listed as 5 minutes, but we went through the cemetery queue which slowed things down because people in front of us were taking their time and not really making enough space to let others through. I didn't know this going in, but Jeff was expecting it to be a scary ride. When we got to the part at the end where the ghosts all start singing, he just turned to me and said "So, it's not like a real haunted house?" I couldn't stop laughing!

We rounded the corner to Fantasyland and BAM!! Suddenly we found out where everyone else in the park was hiding. We ducked into Gaston's Tavern for a maple-cinnamon roll, which was quite tasty! We split it which was a good idea, because there is no way I could finish one. It took a little while to make our way to Storybook Circus, since we weren't sure whether or not there was a northern pathway connecting that area to Enchanted Forest with all the Mine Train construction. As we made our way around, we peeked into the window in the wall that lets you see the progress on the roller coaster. That was really cool, and something that I'm surprised they displayed to guests. Once in the circus area, we got fast passes for the Barnstormer. Goofy and Donald were available to meet, and the wait was only 5 minutes so we went for it. The character interaction was great. Goofy signed our book upside down, and when Donald saw that it was upside down he looked in Goofy's direction and shook his head. They also each pointed to our anniversary buttons and gave us big hugs! Then it was time to use our Barnstormer fast passes. The line was at 40 minutes, so boy was I happy to have them! The ride was fun, but I don't remember it being that short. It felt like it was over in 30 seconds!

We had done everything we wanted to in that area, and Jeff knew how much I wanted to try Be Our Guest for lunch. It was about 12:30, and there was a certainly a line to get in, but we decided to try anyway. The wait was about 20 minutes to get in, and was the only substantial line we waited in all day. Everyone who was in line seemed excited to get in, and no one was complaining about the wait. It was refreshing seeing so many people relaxed and enjoying themselves during the wait instead of just wishing they were inside already. We got to see some nice details of the Beast's castle; the waterfall was very lovely! As we neared the entrance, the mother right in front of us noticed her two young daughters who were becoming quite antsy and refusing to listen to her. She very calmly said that they would be inside soon but if the girls didn't start to behave they were going to eat lunch somewhere else. The kids promised to behave and then immediately started trying to climb on the rocks! So the lady picked them both up and walked straight out of the line, so I guess she wasn't bluffing!

We got to the door and the CM said to me in a silly French accent "Mademoiselle, I do not know if you are aware of this, but the gentleman behind you! He is also celebrating an anniversary! Perhaps you should get to know him." I laughed and said "Perhaps!" and gave Jeff a quick little kiss, which made the CM gasp and exclaim "Oh my goodness, that was fast!" It was very corny but sweet and funny. We got into the restaurants, ordered at a kiosk, and chose a seat in the ballroom. It was so pretty! I also noticed that there were a wide variety of table sizes. This was nice because I always feel bad taking a four person table for two people if it's the only option available. Our food came quickly and was very tasty! Jeff chose the braised pork and thought it was really tender and well seasoned. I had the nicoise salad. The tuna was nicely cooked, seared but cool in the middle, and the vinaigrette on salad was tangy. For dessert we shared two cream puffs, chocolate and lemon-raspberry. They were both really good, and I really liked the chocolate one because it had the dark chocolate taste while still being light and fluffy.

So yes, lunch was very satisfying! We headed over to Tomorrowland for Carousel of Progress. The history behind this attraction fascinates both of us, and Jeff is also a huge Jean Shepherd fan, so he was really looking forward to it. One of the concerns that I had preparing for this trip was that the Carousel would be closed to be updated while we were there and Jeff would never get to hear Jean Shepherd perform in it. Thankfully, I had nothing to worry about, and we finally got to enjoy it together.

We left Tomorrowland around 2:00 and headed to Main Street for the Celebrate a Dream Come True parade. But first we were treated to a performance by the Dapper Dans! And to Jeff's delight, after watching The Simpsons for 20 something years, they closed their performance with Baby on Board! I'm glad we got there when we did because even though no one waiting when we sat down, it filled up within 15 minutes. The parade was very entertaining, and it was fun to see the characters up close and dance around. The Step-Sisters were our favorite part because they went out of their way to make a grumpy face at the father sitting next to us who didn't seem to be enjoying himself.

At this point we decided to take a break from the park and head over to Ft. Wilderness. Being in the boat with the cool breeze was so relaxing! The boat docked at Ft. Wilderness, and we walked towards the building that hosts Hoop Dee Doo. There were some CMs outside playing games with people waiting to enter, and it looked like everyone was having a good time. The campgrounds were beautiful and completely unlike anywhere else on the property. We walked along a nature trail, and crossed a small river before rounding back to the main area. There were some horses being tended to in the barn, and we watched a few young children preparing for a ride learning how to properly ride a pony.

We circled around back towards the boat dock, and as we walked by the Backyard BBQ area, Jeff noticed picnic tables and asked if we could sit for a minute. I was exhausted and was only thinking about changing my socks so I didn't think anything of it. He wandered off to use the restroom while I worked on my sneakers, and after he came out he just looked really confused and said to me "Why would you need to use the shower during a bbq?" I wasn't paying attention and asked what the heck he was talking about, so he pointed to the restrooms he was just in and explained "It says 'restrooms and showers' over there." I looked up to where he was pointing, then saw the large green fence only a few yards away and NEARLY FLIPPED OUT. We tip-toed Scooby Doo style along the fence, keeping an eye out for any CMs in the area. We found a hole and peeked through to see the old River Country pool. It was unbelievable, looked exactly like the photos I had seen online. It felt like it wasn't real, this old, abandoned water-park right here in front of us. We didn't try to get around the fence to another area because no way did we want to risk getting banned!

There was a boat at the dock, so we headed over and jumped on it. We also got a nice view of the lake side of River Country from the boat as we passed by. The boat happened to be going to the Contemporary, so we decided we'd check out the resort and grab a snack. We went to Contempo Cafe, and Jeff chose the Birthday cupcake. The cashier asked us if we had a PIN for our room keys, which is when we learned that it was part of the new RFID system that only the deluxe resorts have converted to so far. The cupcake was good, a little too sweet for me, but Jeff loved it. The monorail came in soaking wet, so we figured that we had made it inside just before a huge downpour. Jeff wanted to see Epcot from above, so we switched routes and enjoyed the view. By the time we returned to TCC, the rain had stopped except for a few sprinkles here and there. It was dark, and the castle beautifully was lit up in the distance. The ferry had just come in, and many wet, unhappy people were heading back to their cars. I felt bad for them, but it happens. We got a front row, top deck view of the castle as the ferry made its way across the water.

We reentered the park around 6:30 and sat on the curb outside of Town Square Theater. Within a few minutes it filled up, and soon the lights were off and the electro-synthe-magnetic musical sounds began! The Main Street Electrical Parade was absolutely gorgeous, and everyone watching had a blast. My favorite float was Pete's Dragon, it was HUGE!

The parade passed around 7:20, and I noticed that the line for Mickey at Town Square Theater was only 5 minutes. We grabbed the opportunity and got straight in. This was definitely one of the highlights of the trip. He kissed my hand, and I giggled, to which Jeff responded "You kissing my wife, Mickey?" He turned around, stared Jeff in the face and nodded his head. Our photographer laughed at this, and as Mickey signed our book, I mentioned that Jeff has a crush on Minnie. Mickey looked him up and down and brushed him off with a wave of the hand. When we posed for the photo, Mickey PUSHED JEFF OUT OF THE PICTURE! So we took two photos, one of just me and Mickey and one of the three of us. Before leaving, he gave me a hug and shook Jeff's hand. It was basically the best character meet and greet we could hope for.

We got back into Main Street in time to see the castle light show. It was nice but didn't really keep our attention..until the castle went black and INSERT COIN popped up in 8-bit format. Never thought we'd get to see Ralph wreck the castle! And of course Wishes was just lovely. We were standing in Main Street, and it wasn't crowded at all. I think the rain forced a lot of people out of the park early.

Hungry for dinner, we took the monorail to Grand Floridian and hopped a bus to Downtown Disney. I'd been dying to try the roasted salmon at Wolfgang Puck Express. It was covered with a flavorful mango salsa and sitting on top of very tender fennel and roasted potatoes. Jeff loved his bacon wrapped meatloaf. It was so tender he didn't need to use his knife! We each had a creme brulee for dessert and scraped the plates clean. We took our time walking back to the bus but weren't in the mood to really hang around. So we headed back to Pop for the night.

Yay! It feels like it's been awhile since I've had a TR to read! Love it! Your first day sounded so relaxing and wonderful! Side note, my DH has the same Batman shirt that he wears all the time. I hope the Jungle Cruise lived up to your DH's expectations! Can't wait to read more...
