Another Tipping Question...

Ok...I'am sure my foot is getting pulled here...I spoke to a friend today ( Lawyer ) And he frequents USA on lots of holidays ( Not WDW. ) But he always stays at 5* hotels....When I told him that this year we are staying at a Disney deluxe resort he said I'd have to tip big style...He said the higher the hotel star rating, then the porters and maids expect bigger tips as they are taxed higher than their colleagues who work in smaller motels...Is he right or am I getting the wool pulled over my eyes.? eek

No, they won't be taxed at a higher rate than folks at a smaller hotel.

This is the general tip breakdown I use for Hotel staff, no matter where I am staying.

$1 - $2/bag for skycaps, bellhops, doormen, and parking valets if they handle bags. I base on the size of the bag - a carry-on gets $1 anything larger gets $2.

$5 - $10 per night for housekeeper and I usually base that on the number of people that I have in the room with me $2 per person then I round up. If I'm exceptionally messy at any point I will toss in a little extra for things.

How much the hotel employees will pay in taxes depends on how much their hourly pay is, it has nothing to do with the star level of the hotel. It is very possible that a bell hop that works in a deluxe resort, or 5 star hotel, might get paid more hourly than a bellhop that works at a value resort, or lower star hotel, but not much more. Probably not enough to cause them to be in a higher tax bracket than a worker at a lower star hotel.

DH and I don't stay on property but we have stayed at all the 4 and 5 star hotels surrounding WDW many times. In my experience, the workers make more money at these hotels, because the patrons of these hotels typically tip higher. The hotels themselves probably don't pay much more to their employees, but in 4 and 5 star hotels the majority of people staying there are in a "higher tax bracket" themselves, so a $20 tip per service may not be much money to most of them. But the workers don't typically claim cash tips, so this wouldn't effect their taxes either.
Our policy has always been to leave something for the maid everyday. I clean our hotel rooms every night, so the only thing the maid has to do is make our bed and bring new towels. But we still tip. I leave about $5/per night in a 4 or 5 star hotel. But like I said, I clean the room every night. There's not even a cup left out for her to throw away. If your room is a mess(and you are on vacation so it's your prerogative!) then you may want to tip more per day.

I tip 5 dollars a night for my room and most uk visitors don't tip at all as it's not our culture.

I believe strongly that because wdw caters to international visitors it is time they include the tip rate in there prices and pass that on to staff as an increase in their hourly rate.

However that is never going to happen and the staff do amazing job we break it down to a dollar per guest and a dollar for the room if its a two bedroom suit we an an extra. We also leave notes and drawings, but over 14 nights $5 dollars adds up to quite an extra cost.

Well when in Rome...As they say...I do tip on meals here in Scotland, not as much as in USA..As far as mouse maid goes..We leave 3 dollars each day next to her card...Saying that,I'am a creature of habit and make my own bed in the morning before heading out to the parks..

It just depends. My parents only stay at moderate and value resorts and they've never tipped maid service. They actually think it's absurd to tip them because it isn't a "tipped" job like a hair stylist or restaurant server. My parents can be cheap, too..lol

We tip the housekeeping depending on the service. I've had some crappy maid service at WDW. The best maid service we ever had was on the Disney Fantasy and we tipped her a large amount because she really, really cleaned the room, changed sheets almost daily (if we asked) and turned down the bed each night...not to mention cute little towel animals!

we give the ME driver and the bell hop $10, I usually leave $20 for the maid, we are dvc members and don't really get maid service, we get new towels once or twice, they don't clean the room until we check out. Usually tip the bartender very well at the resort the first time so he/she remembers us the whole week and also as we go usually a $1 or $2 per drink. I have always wondered though does anybody tip concierge for any service they provide like booking a res. or activity?

Your Majesty, about those upside down photos - do they appear right side up when you look at them on your computer? And are you using a cell phone or an actual camera?

But that is a screen shot, not a picture. It's when you take a picture using the camera. I have told you that before. You are holding the iPad upside down. I just did it with my iPad.

No, I think it's more user error. I take pictures and use them on here all the time and never have a problem with them being upside down.

King Fergus

Ok..I've just taken 2 photos of stuff we have bought over the years at WDW in our sun lounge..First one was taken the way I always take them..The next one I took upside down..At this moment on my albums app on my pad..Both are showing the correct way up..I'am now going to download them here...

best thread ever

King Fergus

Ah ha...I've been experimenting here..I take lots of food photos of stuff I make in my kitchen with the button to my left, yet all the photos are the correct way up when I download them on my Facebook site..But only when I post them to this site,is it upside down..Therefore I'll take all photos on upside mode I- pad when posting on wdwforgrownups site..Must be something to do with the 3000 miles across the Atlantic.. laugh
