Best for big families at Disney: Buffets or sit-down "service" restaurants?

A friend and I were discussing this the other day, and I wanted to open the topic up here. Do buffets get too hectic with a bunch of people around the table getting up and sitting down, or is it just easier that way?

Also, what about the all-you-can-eat meals like Whispering Canyon or 'Ohana. Would you rather just go to a buffet?

I think if you have a variety of different likes/dislikes around the table, the buffet is best because it has more options. Foodies can get "interesting" dishes, while the kids and picky eaters can get standards.

But if your main reason for being there is to enjoy each other, I'd say hit the "family style" service restaurants. Then you get waited on, but everyone stays at the table and shares the food.

We'd choose the buffets, for sure. They often have characters, so that's an added bonus! Plus, there's such great variety and everyone can eat at their own pace.

Buffets have the additional benefit that you can immediately "spring into action." Keeping all the kids in line for example can be a hassle while you're waiting for your food. In a buffet you can just get up and start eating immediately, which can reduce some of the stress of a big group.

When we go with the family and my nieces and nephews we always end up doing a buffet, especially at Vero and Cape May. The buffets end up being about the same price as ordering table service and my brother and nephew are big eaters. We probably don't get as much value with the little ones but it seems to work out in the end.

When I go with my friends we usually do the table service restaurants so we can have cocktails and share a desert.

How many friends do you usually visit with, Chris? I'm in need of a good "friends getaway!"

Usually either some of the girls from work my two besties or this weekend I'm going with a co-worker and her husband who has also become my friend.

I'm always trying to recruit people to go but not too many people are into Disney like I am. Everyone complains about how expensive it is and that's even when I let them stay with me for free. I guess some people just can't appreciate the Mouse.

Yeah -- we tend to get into "Disney cost mode" and don't notice how expensive everything is after a while. $50 for dinner starts to seem natural after a while!!!

Whispering Canyon is a really fun with a group...especially if they get in the spirit of it. We went last summer with some friends and really had a blast. Table next to us had about a dozen people celebrating a BD and they were having a good time too!!

Have you ever seen a family that didn't know what they were getting into and definitely is not in the spirit? It's kind of fun to watch.

I guess since I'm a nurse and face the reality of how short life is everyday, I don't mind spending money on things that bring me happiness. Afterall, I can't take it with me when I leave permanently. wheelchair
