Disney Legends - Land & Sea Event this summer

The admins have graciously allowed me to post this announcement about an event that we have put together this summer starting at Disneyland, culminating at sea on the Carnival Paradise.

It is called the "Legends (and More) Cruise", and features Disney Legend's X Atencio & Bob Gurr, Michael Broggie, the son of Disney Legend Roger Broggie, original Tinker Bell model Margaret Kerry, and former Imagineer Terri Hardin.

The trip has been priced to be affordable to all, and there will be lots of time to spend finding out about these wonderful people. I have had the chance to talk a lot with this bunch, and they are ALL excited about their lives and sharing their stories with the passengers. Think about it. Four of these five people KNEW Walt Disney personally.

X Atencio wrote the theme you hear at 'Pirates Of The Caribbean', and the script in the "Haunted Mansion".

Bob Gurr designed the monorail, Autotopia and just about everything ELSE that moves at Disneyland.

Michael Broggie, as a child was part of the "crew" that ran Walt's backyard railroad at his home. There are pictures of Michael on the Disneyland train with Walt a month before opening as they looked over every detail before the opening.

Margaret Kerry was hired to act out the part of Tinker Bell. Her every move was filmed, and then played back over and over for the animators who then created this beloved character.

Finally, Terri Hardin, the only member who didn't know Walt personally, brings a bit more of a modern perspective to the group and can discuss the Imagineer process with those on the trip.

On the Sunday before cruising, we're taking everyone to Walt's Barn at Griffith Park in Los Angeles, where Michael Broggie will give us the "personal tour". Afterward, Bob Gurr will give us a personal tour of Disneyland where we'll see his window on Main Street, ride the monorail with it's designer, AND he's promised a "behind the scenes look" at the Monorial barn!

If anyone is interested, check out www.legendscruise.net. There is a LOT of information on that site about each of the people participating in the trip and links to their bios, video and much more.

Thanks gang for letting me post this on here!

She has. I know she and Michael are appearing at something this weekend, but I have no idea what it is. Margaret has made a pretty good name for herself as "Tinker Bell". Check out her website. www.tinkerbelltalks.com

Wow. eek What a great group. Are you setting this up alone, Ed, or is there a team/company you're working with?

How many folks do you have spots for? I imagine that "personal tour" could get difficult with too many people.

Will definitely check out the site.

It is primarily something that I set up on my own. I do some group travel, and I'm working with Jana at the "Lets Talk About Disney" podcast as my partner. Just got on the phone one day and started making calls. Next thing I knew, Bob Gurr was on the phone and one thing led to another. My wife, Jana and I went to Louisville in May to hear Michael Broggie speak about Walt's Railroads and we've had everyone except X on the podcast so far.

The first 36 cabins get the 'preferential treatment'. That puts you in a rotation to have dinner with one of the people involved.

We're getting close to that now, and hopefully with the price where it is we'll blow past it.

Any ideas on how to make the trip better would be appreciated!

One thing we're doing is having the ship's photographer take pictures of the guests with these five, then make them available later in the cruise for autographing. This will make a great souvenir. Some of these folks are getting on up there, so we should soak in their experiences while we can.

MouseTraveler--how are you doing your advertising? Also, how long has that podcast been around?

Having dinner with one of those people would be incredible.

We're doing it through a series of podcasts that are listed on the Legends Cruise website, as well as the folks who are going on the cruise are helping us with it.

LTAD has been around for a couple of years now, and if you go back to their past episodes you can hear interviews with Bob Gurr, Margaret Kerry & Terri Hardin.

This is such an intriguing idea. Has anyone done "legends" cruises before--or had Disney personalities on a cruise?

Also, might be a stupid question, but it doesn't seem from the site like this is a Disney Cruise--is it? Was that choice made intentionally?

#1) There have been a few cruises with Marty Sklar and others, but nothing with as many as this.

#2) This is NOT a Disney Cruise and yes this was done intentionally. Mainly because Disney doesn't have regularly scheduled west coast cruises, and if they did the base cost would be about 3 times the cost of this cruise. Plus, Disney will NOT work with groups when they have special cruises (ie.. west coast, Med, repositioning)

When I say three times, that would be the cost of the ship on the WEST coast, not the east coast rates.

Ideally you would want this on a Disney Cruise ship, but costs and primarily logisitics didn't make it end up that way.

Thanks for your response. I was wondering if (and hoping not) Disney was somehow "against" the idea of you doing this independently. It sounds like that's not the case, which is great.

Why is it critical for the cruise to be a west coast cruise? Is this a request by the Special Guests?

Actually, Disney isn't against it at all. We had contact with Marty Sklar early on and immediately Disney LEGAL was on the phone with me. They were very nice and were just looking to make sure we weren't calling it the "DISNEY" Legends Cruise or something. They thought it was a great idea.

The idea is that if this one works as planned, we'll have a 2010 event on the EAST coast. This one was easier to do since all of the people involved live within an hour or so of Anaheim and the Port. Plus, the side visit to Griffith Park can only be done in LA. Bob Gurr can do HIS thing anywhere!

Hey, that's great! mickey I know that this is great advertising for Disney, but I'm glad they didn't make the red tape too difficult for you.

This just seems like such an exciting opportunity for everyone. Kudos, MT.

I really wish I could go on this cruise! The people are going to be absolutely fascinating!!! And the cost is great too... it's just the cost of getting to the west coast that does me in. That and the fact that all our $$ is going to the double-dip we're doing in November.

But I'm really excited to hear about the 2010 you're thinking about on the east coast. Do you have any details on that yet? What about ideas? If you don't want to make it public yet, could you PM me or tweet me? I don't know what I could do to help but I'd love to help. clapping

No details as of now. We're waiting to see how this goes, but we'd like to do a primarily land based event at WDW with some special guests, followed by a cruise. On this one, the primary stuff would take place on land and the cruise would be more for enjoyment (although I'm sure there would be some events).

That makes sense--of course the train barn tour would ensure a west coast launch. I'm really looking forward to hearing about the east coast rendition. Wonder who you'll have lined up for that one!

Sounds quite cool! The timing might be intriguing to work out though. You wouldn't want to put it too close to MouseFest or the MouseMeet (is that what the PA event in the summer is called?) I have an idea, though, that I'm going to tweet you about. Catch ya later!

I think Deb Wills already has a cruise during Mousefest. I think they book about 80 cabins a year for it, which is pretty strong.

Well, the draw for your cruise would definitely be the strong connection Disney's origins via your "guest stars."

I think there's probably room for two cruises, as long as they're serving different core target markets.

I dunno... MouseFest Sea is a pretty strong event each year. I don't think this particular thing is about the guests but about the camaraderie amongst Disneyphiles. It might not be a good idea to set it too close to MFSea because I think it would be setting up the new event for failure.

Now... a few months after MFSea... maybe in April or something like that (curious how that's right around my birthday and I could ask for it as a b'day present laugh ) would be wonderful.

Theres a practical side to that analysis too (OTHER than the obvious self-serving part of Ms. Mommy!). laugh
For a group, you're going to have MUCH better luck with DCL in April than in December. Disney won't even book a group in peak seasons, which cuts out any good deals you might ordinarily get.

That makes a lot of sense.

What are the "peak" seasons for DCL? I only know about WDW peak seasons.

I know in the past when I've talked to them about groups, you cannot get a group deal in the summer or December.

Based on use of DVC points, your best months to go are during April-May, and maybe September-October. Some people don't like the fall dates because it is in the middle of hurricane season, but I don't let that bother me. We've done two or three fall cruises and never had any problem. The only time there was any hurricane activity in the Caribbean, they reversed our Nassau-Castaway Cay days and we never even knew there was even any bad weather.

By the way HyperMommy. We too had a bit of "winning luck". On a DCL cruise about four years ago, my wife insisted we play bingo on the final day. Said "she had a feeling".

B12 will always be my lucky number, as it was the number that allowed me to win the big pot for the week. Was nearly $5,200 and they pay you in $100 bills!!

There is something of a story behind it. Before we played, I went to the bar outside the Walt Disney Theater to pick up a couple of drinks.
When I won, they wanted to verify I was the proper owner of the card and I couldn't find my ID card. I had left it at the bar. At the time, I didn't know that, so I was in PANIC mode! When I remembered it, I went running back to the bar and found it.
You have to remember the situation here. You are standing on the stage while they check all the numbers on your card. (You had to fill the entire card.) There are 400-500 people in there who (although polite) are hoping to heck that you made a mistake and that the game can continue!
Then, in the middle of checking the numbers, with me standing on the stage, the emcee made it seem like I'd made a mistake and had a number wrong! He thought it was funny. He was a little guy and I jokingly got him in a headlock and told him we "won't do that again!". It was all in fun.
Greatest thing about it, you are at sea and they pay you in cash. They take you upstairs and count out all that money.
Funny thing about it. I came home with about 4 grand in an envelope in my back pocket. Every 30 seconds my wife was feeling my butt to make sure I hadn't lost the money.
Most affection I've had in twenty years!! laugh

SO did you actually bolt off stage without the crowd knowing what's up? Maybe they thought you were a scammer?

Also carrying large sums of cash always makes me nervous too. I check it every few minutes to make sure I didn't drop it. (I wish it were a more frequent problem)

MouseTraveler, it wasn't the money she was feeling for.... it was just an excuse! LOL. And what's wrong with me trying to arrange the universe to my liking? It was good enough for Walt and he's my idol!

Gotta run, guys... time to take the kid to Young Marines across town. It's almost enough to make me wish he was driving already.

.........

Almost.

biggrin Great story! That (winning the money, of course) must've been such a great cap to your cruise!
