Dole Whip theory

We noticed when we went to get my favorite Dole Whip with rum at EPCOTs Pineapple Promenade that it was not called Dole Whip. The menu and signs said "Pineapple Soft Serve" with rum. Thinking it may be a trademark-name thing with Dole or something weird legally, we checked out Aloha Isle at MK to see the status of Dole Whip there. Thank goodness, it was still Dole Whip at MK. We came up with a theory that Disney (or Dole) doesn't want the name Dole Whip tainted by pouring rum over it, so they took away the name Dole Whip. We asked a CM about our theory and she confirmed it with a nod and a smirk, but said she couldn't officially say. I get my Dole Whip with rum whenever it is available - food and wine - and I swear it was called Dole Whip last year.
Just another interesting Disney tidbit mickey

They shouldn't call it by the same name if they add alcohol to it. It might confuse people into thinking that it is the same thing that they get elsewhere, especially at Adventureland. Think of the complaints Disney will get when parents who didn't know this particular one has alcohol, and served it to their kids, just because the name is the same.

It's pretty clear when you order at the window, you have to order it with rum, and you actually have a choice of dark rum or coconut rum, so you have to be specific if you are ordering it with rum. You can also get it without, but it's still listed as pineapple soft serve, not Dole Whip. Plus I'm sure you have to be 21 to order it with rum. I can't see how any parent could possibly make the mistake of getting their child one with rum. Plus the one with rum is more expensive. It's pretty clear and I don't think that could happen. The rum is poured over the Dole Whip when you order it, it's not in the actual soft serve.

Still, a Dole whip plus Rum is not the regular Dole whip. In cooking, if you add even just one ingredient, or even change one step in the technique, its name can change.

Is there an issue with this having a different name?

No, I don't have a problem at all, just a simple Disney observation I thought I'd share. If they were going to give it a new name, they could have been more creative than pineapple soft serve though.

Interesting! I would have expected it to be called Dole Whip with Rum, too...I thought that was how it was advertised last year on the F&GF menus I read but I could be wrong.

I am so excited about Dole Whip with coconut rum!! Literally my 3 favorite things: pineapple, ice cream, and Malibu. What could be better than all of these mixed together?? Even if they call it "pineapple soft serve with rum"...name is not as snazzy, but the taste will most likely make up for it biggrin

Very interesting observation Julie mickey

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it is only served during the F&GF and MAYBE the F&WF, right? Don't know if your trip coincides with F&WF but thought I'd warn you before you got too excited!

You're right Allie, only during the F&G and the Food and Wine. I think last year was the first year, but this year they have 2 kinds of rum, coconut and dark. I tried it with the coconut for the first time today and it was yummy, I like it better than the dark which I always get. I'm sure it was called Dole Whip with rum last year. No matter what it's called, it's my favorite!

Well the, Hoop de Do! We are there the opening week of F&W! I am just trying to figure out how to drink tequila (margaritas), and rum, and wine, and even beer without having nasty memories of Epcot.... laugh
