Ever think of being a travel agent?

The Bachelor/Bachelorette Party thread got me thinking about how much I love helping people plan Disney World trips. This morning, someone posted on Facebook about inexpensive hotel options near Disney and i automatically got into planning mode (and trying to convince her she had to stay on site since there will be SIX children under the age of eight, so naps are a must).

I love planning Disney trips for me, but I also love helping other people plan their trips too, especially if they are new to the parks. On days like today, I wonder if I would want to be a Disney Travel agent for somewhere like Mouse Fan Travel.

Would you ever consider it?

Absolutely. I have a good friend who's a Disney specialist travel agent, and in addition to the income she gets, there's the added benefit of typical travel agent deals and discounts. It seems like a great idea -- even if you don't do it full time.

Have you looked into or researched how to get certified?

No, I haven't really looked into it that much.

I think having a travel agent in the family could be a huge plus. I don't personally have the personality for it, but I would love it if my DW decided to do it. I'm all for employment that doesn't require me to be in a specific location. Even more if it gets me discounts at Disney World!

I thought about it once..the downer is that unless you just want to do it part time you really can't make a career out of it instantly.
I have no idea how one would go about being a "Disney" travel agent but I know they get huge perks..and how fun would it be to help people plan and get paid to do it!

I think like anything entrepreneurial, you need to be prepared to put in quite a bit of time before you expect to be making any money. Most businesses don't make anything for the first year. TAs fortunately don't have a ton of startup costs, but you still have to build a client base, so it will probably be a lot of work for a while without much pay. That being said, once you're established you probably have a very nice lifestyle. I also fear though that Disney Travel Agents may be very competitive, might be best to specialize in something else.

I love the idea, and am thinking about it myself. The extra perks seem great. And, if you can afford to do it part time until you build your client base, it can be lucrative.

I have a friend who's been building her client base locally for a while now, and she's very successful -- even without online advertising.
