friends or family hinting at DVC invite?

Since becoming DVC owners my husband and I have had a couple of family members strongly HINT that they want an invite on one of our upcoming DVC vacations. At the very least to be able to stay in our DVC room with us. We currently just ignore these hints but I suspect they may get more outright. I'm curious if anyone else has had this issue, and if so, how did you handle these not-so-subtle hints. sarcastic

Could you suggest to them that they can rent points?

I'd be tempted to be rather blunt about it & say something like, "If you stop trying to get invited we might invite you, but if you keep trying to be invited there will be no invitation ever." The response I'd be more likely to give would be to wait until they've done one of their hints & then respond with, "Did you want to ask us something?" Good luck dealing with this.

Hook them up with your DVC guide, who could certainly help them become members too. biggrin

I think it depends on the type of relationship you have with the "hinters". If it were MY family, I would just come out with it and say, "Your welcome to spend $25,000 or whatever I paid to have your vacation every year too." I would pass along DVC information. OR I would say sure you can go when WE invite you, but it won't be free. I'd at least make them pay some money for it.

If it were my DH's family, that would be up to him to decide how to handle. I don't think either of ours would ever dare ask or hint though.

I would be really annoyed if my family were hinting to come along for free, if they were outright asking us if they could come and rent some points then that would be another matter Wink

We don't have hinters.

I am begging my family to come with us this trip. We bought that resale that had 100% of the points banked, so I have been cheap on our trips trying to save points for this big family vacation. At one point, we were going to have 12 plus my 2 year old! Everyone was coming! We are down to 6 plus my 2 year old. Sadly, my family is not as interested in WDW as we are. Oh well. I can't even beg my family to use my points. My parents and my Aunt will be joining us. gaah

And my inlaws have no idea about the DVC thing. My Husband does not want to hear about what they think of his timeshare purchase. Oh well! Their loss! biggrin

We don't own DVC, but we do own timeshares that we use to exchange to the Orlando area.

We've never had anyone hint that they wanted to come along. We have invited friends and family to come along several times and had a great time with them. I think if someone did hint for an invitation, we'd probably say sure, let's find a date that suits us all.

However, we have never and will never invite others to come along unless we have a multi-bedroom unit with more than one bathroom. We've had people sleep on our sofa bed, but we've never had anyone sleeping in the same room with us or sharing our bathroom. If someone were to hint about coming along on our next trip (one-bedroom unit at Saratoga Springs with just one bathroom), I'd send them info on Disney resorts and tell them we'd love to vacation with them, but they're going to have to get their own room. So if your DVC points will only allow you to get a studio, or even a one bedroom/one bathroom unit, I'd suggest the same approach for you.

I recommend a response like "Are you challenging me to a duel?"

Then proceed to break out the pillows.

If you win and they lose, they can't ask you about it anymore.

Ugh. That's annoying. Famiy would never do that, but I have some friends I could see doing it.

I don't know how I'd handle that. Probably by responding as sweetly as I could that DH and I were so proud of working so hard to achieve this dream and would be crossing our fingers that they could achieve their dreams as well.

Of course, if I had family or friends that worked really hard and couldn't seem to get a break, I'd probably offer it to them once in a while. Chances are that those type of people would never ask because they'd be working so hard to get ahead and I can honestly say I was one of those when I was a single mom who couldn't collect a penny of child support. I probably never would have accepted such a gracious trip because I would have felt obligated. But it would have made me feel great that someone recognized how hard I worked!

I don't own DVC, but I have friends who are hinting that they want to go with me on my trips this year for the races. I've made it clear that they are welcome to come, but there's no such thing as a free Disney trip!! Thus far, only my sister has taken me up on the offer!!

thanks for the suggestions, everyone. We are just going to ignore the *hints* until they get more outright, at which point we will let them know we are booked up for traveling with friends for the next 2 years LOL!

I'll take their spots...there's 5 of us, so it'll work out just fine. HA!
