Fun Ideas: Family Reunion Gift Bag Grab

I've been thinking about fun events to plan for family reunions, weddings, and large group travel. It's always nice to be able to offer the people traveling a gift basket, but it can also be very expensive. I came up with an idea that I think gets everyone involved, and saves some money. I would love to hear what you guys think about it!

Family Reunion "Gift Bag Grab"

What: Gift Bags Created for the Family By the Family!

Organization: 1 Main Planner and 5-10 Family Units - Essentially 1 Family or 1 Single Traveler is a "Unit"

Each "Unit" buys a gift for all the units and sends it ahead of time to the main planner. Example: If you were adding Sun Screen to the Bags for 10 Units, you would purchase 10 bottles of Sun Screen. You would then ship the sunscreen to the planner.

The Planner then gathers together all the supplies that are sent to him/her ahead of time and puts them together into Gift Bags where everyone gets one of each gift. You should have a gift from each of the units that will be attending.

On the first night of your trip, get everyone together (perhaps a a pool party! or welcome dinner) and hand out the gift bags!

The planner could chose an overall theme like Beach Party, Vacation Necessities, Safari, or just General Disney Fun. Every family would end up with a great gift basket full of things picked out by the other travelers to enjoy on their vacation.

What do you think? If you were doing a family reunion do you think this would be fun? What would you add to the gift bags?

I would probably keep eveyone posted on what has been purchased so as to avoid duplicate purchases. I think it would be both do-able and fun.

Edit: On further thought telling everyone what has been purchased would take away the fun aspect of the basket.

I agree that you wouldn't want to spoil the surprise.

Maybe the Planner could keep a list just so they knew that there weren't going to be duplicates.
