Lap Bars on Splash Mountain

Speaking of water rides...how do we feel about the installation of lap bars on Splash Mountain as of today? I don't think it's such a bad idea, but I guess some are concerned that it will mean longer waits.

After all these years they are just now putting them on? Why? Seems kind of silly.

I think it will probably mean longer wait times as it will take longer for crewmembers to check the proper closing and use of these lap bars.

Seriously? sad This seems like such a waste of time. I'm not looking forward to it.

Did someone get hurt that they are adding these? I never felt remotely unsafe on that ride...

According to an article I read in the Sentinel last nite, someone was killed in 2000 - when he got out of his boat and was struck by another boat. (I'll let you draw your own conclusion.) But gosh - that was definitely a long time ago to be doing this.

If I had to guess and offer an opinion, I'm seeing lots of unnecessary-ish retrofits for safety's sake around the parks. After how many years? - a gazillion? - they put doors on the parking lot trams. I was never a big user of them...but now, forget it. Can't imagine trying to get myself, children, and a stroller put away without annoying everyone around me. And as many of you know, you can't ride in the front of the monorail anymore. I know there's a lawsuit pending over the monorail crash...it seems that they're just looking at any and all possibilities for future issues, and are addressing them before someone gets - or rather gets themselves - hurt.

From what I read the impetus was people who are getting out of the boat before it's time, not because anyone's gotten hurt recently. I can't express how much I don't like this change. I suspect Splash Mountain will plummet down my "Favorite Rides" chart.

I had no idea about the front of the monorail!! That is sad..however..it also makes me glad at the same time because there was also some pushy woman and her 89 kids trying to ride in the front and would be screaming at the CM "but it's Billy Bob's birthday"..as if that would suddenly make the front car empty..but I digress..

I am not really a fan of this idea either..lap bars..hmph. But being my usual indecisive self I GUESS I understand the point of it all.

No front of the monorail anymore either? When did that happen? I loved doing that.

After the unfortunate accident which killed a monorail pilot. I know...it's sad, because it's so fun to ride up there. But - had a family been in the front of that train, they most certainly would have died.

I know we've asked to ride up front since then, and we've been denied. However, since a couple of you are questioning it, I have a trip planned over there the weekend after next, and I'll double-check with some of the crew to make sure it's a policy. Things can be inconsistent around the 'World...we all know that.

That was put into effect after that tragic accident involving the two monorails. It happened late at night and there were no passengers in the conductors cabin, fortunately.

Yeah, I didn't realize the monorail thing either and asked last time we were there and was told they didn't do that anymore. I was sad.

LAP BARS ON SPLASH MOUNTAIN?!! NOOOOO! I don't like it. Not at all. May sound dumb, but it might ruin it for me. Or at least take it down several notches.

Boooo!

I'm sure you are right..we haven't been since the accident so I didn't know it had changed...it's smart though best to be safe!

wouldnt the lap bars be off when people are getting out of the log anyway? so.. if they are standing to get out, and the next log hits.. they'd still fall out.. lap bars wont stop that. The vast majority of the accidents that have ever occured at DL or WDW are because guests are in a rush or refuse to listen to cast members or simply dont follow posted signs or directions.
You know whose fault this is? PEOPLE. People always ruin stuff. oh wellsies.

Ha ha!! Indeed! People ARE the problem! Why can't they make it so that just WDWFG members can go to WDW?! laugh

It's a really interesting thought to think of how wonderful WDW would be if only well-behaved, thoughtful people went there. They wouldn't have to do a bunch of the un-fun things they have to do. I think to some degree that's why WDW is better than most amusement parks. You don't have nearly as many roaming bands of teenagers messing up stuff for the rest of us.

Haha - I love that I'm not the only one with an opinion here. My mom and I have both thought that, if we had to be one of the CMs in charge of getting people to move "all the way to the right" - all while said people completely ignore said CM - there would eventually be bloodshed. And a trial, probably.

I'd be right there in front of the courthouse with my "FREE LIZZY!" sign and t-shirt!

Hmm I seem to be the only one who doesn't care that they added them. If they had issues, I understand it. Won't make me love the ride any less

I found the sensation of not being restrained what made the ride so much more fun than it would have been otherwise. You felt just a bit more out of control.
