Measles at Disneyland

You know, I have a tough time feeling empathy when people completely ignore science...

"Six of the seven had not been vaccinated against the disease."

People forget that there is a reason all of these vaccines were developed in the first place. sarcastic

I seem to remember a few years back there was a big hooha in the UK (and maybe further afield ?) over combined MMR vaccinations and a lot of children didn't recieve any jabs at all so this doesn't really suprise me.

One of the seven had been vaccinated and still caught measles. While I think everyone should get the vaccination, you can still get a significant case of measles even if you have received the vaccine.

The article doesn't say anything about it, so this is pure conjecture: I'm willing to bet it was one of the older ones (the oldest was 21), and he didn't receive a booster shot when he was supposed to.

As far as vaccines go, many vaccinations once believed to provide lifetime protection often need a booster shot. There are tests, called titers, that can determine whether or not you are immune to a disease. It is not a bad idea to talk with your healthcare provider prior to travel about the need to have titers done and potentially booster shots where indicated. It is one of the requirements for me due to the clinical aspects of my position.

Due to the numbers of people refusing to get vaccinations these occurrences will only increase in frequency.

I noticed all the cases of mumps in the NHL too, and the reports that boosters were needed for the MMR vaccine. I was sure my son had had the second dose, but it did prompt me to haul out his little record book and check to be sure. (he had!). Even if you get a disease you have been vaccinated against, usually it is a much milder case at least.

A lot of parents refusing vaccines now have never actually seen an epidemic, so they have no idea how sick these diseases can make you. Jenny McCarthy and her ilk have a lot to answer for.

It is the same with Mumps (same vaccine) Most of us who had their vaccination before 1990 need a booster.

I was reading an article at lunch today that the number of cases linked to DL is up to 70, including 5 CMs.

It is indeed, and the State has issued a health warning saying that people who have not been vaccinated should stay away from Disneyland.

I never had the measles vaccine - I had the measles. Hope that means I'm protected.

Yeah, I think that's called 'vaccines the hard way'...
