Pets

So which of you guys are pet people? Do you want pets, hate pate, have pets? We are considering getting a pet and I'm trying to decide if it's going to be a mistake. eek

Two things; one they enrich your life...they just do. Two, rescue/adopt, I think it's imprudent to do otherwise. Millions of dogs and cats are put to death every year because of irresponsible humans. Any breed you can think of, including those that are rare and cost thousands of dollars from breeders, can be adopted/rescued for next to nothing.

Beyond that, my dog is my best friend (besides my wife:) ). I really do share a special bond with him that's hard to explain. It's like he's my own flesh and blood child.

I think people that don't have pets are missing out. It's not that you can't be happy without them, just that you'd be happier with them. That said, there will be times you want to strangle them, just like a human child.

DH and I are definitely pet people, we have two dogs and two kitties. All of our pets are rescues of some sort or another. We didn't get any of them from shelters per se but were adopted none the less.

We have:

Nippie...our Chihuahua, she was adopted from a woman who walked into my husband's office and asked "anyone want this dog?" It took us 3 days to track her down and when we did we found her in a cold, unheated garage laying on a dirty old towel. The vet estimated that she was about 6 weeks old at the time...and we estimate that she'd been taken away from her mother at 2 weeks of age. mad She's "our little girl"!!

Reilly...our Mini Dachsund, he was adopted from a family friend who could no longer keep him. He came complete with dog bed, car seat, and a Coach collar! He's a super sweetie SPONGE!!

Kittie...our domestic long hair kitty...22 years old!! We rescued him from the woods beside our apartment...someone had dumped him behind our complex. He lived there with about 20 other cats. Most of them were feral but he had been someone's pet since he had been fixed and declawed.

Chloe...our domestic short hair, silver tortoise shell. She is our newest adoptee. Someone who moved our of our complex left her behind. We didn't succumb until winter came and we couldn't stand to think of her out in the cold. She has now become our indoor/outdoor cat. She stay in at night and the goes out in the morning when we walk the puppies.

They are all on Dogster.com and Catster.com . You can see Nippie's page at:

http://www.dogster.com/dogs/803897

and from there you can see the rest of the family. Including a page for our Millie who left us last July...1 year ago today...at the age of 17!

Getting badk to the decision regarding getting a pet. Consider it carefully, time-wise, financially. Please consider it a life-long commitment, hopefully your pet will live a nice long life...and they will be your responsibility. In return they will give your years of love, fun and laughter.

Please do adopt, there are thousands of wonderful pets in the shelters in need of a home. A few things to consider, type, size, activity level, age, disposition (active, couch potato, snuggle-bug) etc. There is a perfect pet for every person out there. They will love you unconditionally and add immeasurably to your life.

muchlove

I definitely think it goes without saying that you adopt. Of course I've never really had a hang up about wanting a particular breed. Mutts are usually smarter anyway.

@LifeIsForLiving --- What's your dog like? Can you discern any breeds in there or is it a mutt?

@Millie --- Someone had dumped a declawed cat in the wild? That's terrible.

I think I have almost always had a pet, and have always adopted. There is just something about coming home to my archie that warms the heart. muchlove

I have to say of all the pets I have had throughout my life, one cat still sticks with me. He lived a short life, he died (on St. Patricks day, 2007) just short of his 5th birthday. He was my angel. When he was a kitten he went on my road trips with me, and ate chicken whoppers from burger king (not frequently, but they were his favorite). His ashes are on a shelf in my study.

Some of my friends think its a little creepy to have his ashes, but I have to agree with what was posted earlier, he was my flesh and blood. In fact, just writing about him now brings a tear to my eye.

There are many things to take into consideration, mainly can you afford a pet (vet, food, toys, etc.) and do you have time for a pet. If you answer yes to both those question then you get into more detailed questions. cat, dog, ferret, etc.?? breed? size?? qualities you are looking for??

I am a firm believer that animals enhance lives. If you can afford it, go for it!!!

cdub - He's an American Staffordshire Terrier mix. People always say he looks like Petey (the Little Rascals dog).
Far as adoption and breeds in general; there is a common misconception that if you want a pure bred (or a particular breed in general) you'll need to go to a breeder. That is just not so. You can find ANY TYPE of dog that needs a good home (adoption/rescue). You can find papered pure breeds with lineage traced back generations. Friend of mine rescued an English Bulldog of the same lineage as UGA (the famous University of Georgia mascott). I too prefer mixed breeds though.

Yeah you can usually find a breed specific rescue in your city. It's good to support all those kind of places too.

Yup...isn't that horrible? I think there is a special place in H*LL for people who abuse animals (there's a special room waiting for Michael Vick!!)...anyway, both of our kitties are declawed, and both were abandoned. I just don't get it why would someone go to the expense of neutering/spaying/declawing and then dump them sad

@glassslipper...not weird to have their ashes. I have the ashes of both of my two previous dogs...I've had Jessica's with me for 21 years now.

I have two furbaby kitties, both adopted from shelters. Funny -- I'm not REALLY a cat person (always considered myself a dog person), but I love them just the same. They so sweet; and VERY easy to take care of.

My dog (okay really my mom's dog) is in Ohio and I miss her so much!

She is a shih-tzu and ADORABLE! We didn't adopt because we knew her breeder and she needed a good home.

I think Jason and I will have a dog within a year and I really want another shih-tzu - I love the temperament!

Shih-tzu's really are very docile. At least all the one I've known. Very laid back doggies.

How did I miss this thread! We have 3 family members, and ill introduce them below:

This is Stitch

He was our first family member. He was out at my parents house in the winter. A stray, and we decided to take him in. He is such a loving buddy. And yes... he was named after Stitch. Our son named him! lol

Here is Hobbes

He's our big boy! He is just a HUGE kat, but he is a quick little booger. Hobbes and my son are super close. When my son goes to bed, Hobbes is right behind him and Hobbes will stay with Evan till he is asleep. He is such a sweet cat.

Heres Colby

lol... I actually took that pic tonight while watching some college hoops. He loves for me to hold him like a baby sometimes... lol... a 25 pound baby pug thats 3 now! He was kinda a dream come true to be honest. As a kid I always wanted a pug, and a couple years ago I was finally able to get him. I love my buddy. The pic below is when he wants a treat!

And here is the weird part...

THEY ALL GET ALONG! lol

We have one very small kitty named Charlotte. She used to belong to Andy's sister but she couldn't keep her and we would not let her go to the pound. Andy and I don't have kids and we say that she is our kid, we are very much cat people.
She does test our patience often, haha! When she was a kitten she had a really bad fever. The vet told my sister in law that she would not live though it but she did... altough.. she is a little brain fried. She doesn't learn lessons very well but we love her anyway. I wish I had a picture to share.

I love pets and have several!

Jasper, my german shepherd. I found him in a canyon when he was just a baby; he couldn't get out and my heart broke listening to him cry so he instantly became mine.

Bandit, the chihuahua - he's a funny little guy. He can't stand Jasper but Jasper loooooves him! Bandit is definitely alpha dog, which is hilarious considering his size! silly

Then there's Samantha (or Sammy as we call her,) our cat. Here mama left her in our yard when she was just a little thing and has been ours ever since.

I love them all, and having pets is truly an experience I'd want anyone to have. They really do enrich your life!

Mase, I LOVE YOUR ORANGE CAT!! I own two orange cats, one shorthair and one long hair, as well as two dogs. I have a 35 lb. cockapoo and a 22 lb. lhasa apso.

I love my pets, but owning animals can sometimes have difficulties. It can be difficult finding people to look after my little zoo when I go on vacation. Not to mention, my one cat has had bladder issues (and a surgery $$$$$$$) so he needs special vet food $$$CHA-CHING$$$!

But, even though they are expensive and always throw up on the carpet, never on the tile floor, I love them to pieces and wouldn't trade them for anything.

My suggestion to you dsoup, start with one pet. Don't be crazy like me (or Amerise, or Mase, or DD...)

We added a new furry family member this weekend - meet Dora!

She's a rescue from a family who surrendered her to the animal shelter. She was just a day away from a not so happy ending.

Another long-haired dachshund. About 2-3 years old, like Gus, and a real sweetheart.

She needs to lose a few pounds, but otherwise she's been a perfect lady Smile

Dora, Dora, Dora the EXPLORER!!!!!!!!! DORA!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now you need another dog or cat and name it Boots... lol

I highly commend you for doing that. I really do. When it comes to dogs, I usually only go with breeders and such because its very rare to find a Pug at a shelter. You my friend are awesome!
