HGTV Stars For Flower & Garden Fest Announced

Another Flower and Garden Festival guest favorite is back for 2012 as Disney and HGTV continue their partnership and bring special presentations and demonstrations to the fest.

Recently, Disney announced this year's lineup of stars from HGTV for the 2012 International Flower and Garden Festival at Epcot. Here are the stars and the dates they are scheduled to appear:

  • March 9 - 11: John Gidding, HGTV's Curb Appeal: The Block
  • March 16 - 18: Sabrina Soto, HGTV's The High/Low Project

Treasured Souvenirs: Pick-A-Pearl at Walt Disney World

There are many creative and off the beaten path experiences that you partake in at the Walt Disney World Resort. One of my favorites is the "Pick-A-Pearl" spots that can be found in a variety of locations around the property. For princesses both young and old Pick-A-Pearl can be an exciting and memorable souvenirs that will last through the ages.

President Obama To Visit Disney World

President Barack Obama will be in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World this Thursday to "unveil a strategy that will significantly help boost tourism and travel."

At this time, the specifics of the tourism plans aren't readily available, but Blain Rethmeier, senior vice president of public affars at the U.S. Travel Association had this to say:

We understand that he [Obama] is going to trumpet the value of travel generally and improve facilitation for international travel, especially from China and Brazil.

Should Disney Continue with Stand Alone Hotels?

It was announced last month that The Walt Disney Company has canceled plans to build a 500 room National Harbor resort in Washington, D.C. Disney purchased the 15 acres in May of 2009 for $11 million.

Looking to build a stand-alone Disney branded hotel, they pulled out with Disney spokeswoman Kristin Nolt Wingard stating, "Given the full slate of expansion currently underway at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, the timing isn't right to proceed with another new project of this scale."

Disney Studios Names New President Of Worldwide Marketing

Walt Disney Studios has ushered in a new president of worldwide marketing. Ricky Strauss, a Hollywood veteran, has been named to replace MT Carney in that role.

Up until his recent naming as Disney Studios' top marketing exec, Strauss was the president of Participant Media. Under his seven year tenure there, he was responsible for production and marketing of the studio's "socially responsible" pictures. Prior to that, Strauss spent time as a marketing executive with Columbia Pictures.

Themed Weekends Planned For 2012 Flower and Garden Festival

Even though January isn't even half over yet, plans are in full swing for this year's upcoming International Flower and Garden Festival at Epcot. Concerts, displays and special activities are all on tap for the festival, and Disney has planned some themed weekends to take place during the event. Here are those weekends' dates and highlights:

  • March 23 - 25, 2012: Art in the Garden Weekend. This weekend promises to combine nature and art, including "plein air" artists and their works. Check it out at the World Showcase.

Petals Poolside Bar at Pop Century Resort

Continuing on our tour of Walt Disney World's Bars and Lounges our next stop is the fresh, fun, Petals Pool Bar at The Pop Century Resort. Remember when you could grab a drink and play ping-pong with your buddies in the basement all night? This brings back that young at heart feeling, without the cramped basement.

Wounded Warriors Amputee Softball Team Practices At ESPN Complex

Earlier this week, the Wounded Warriors Amputee Softball Team held practice at Field 13 at ESPN Wide World of Sports. The team, made up of U.S. military veterans who have lost a limb (in some cases, it's more than one) while serving in Afghanistan, travel the country playing exhibition games.

Joining the team on the field was Major League Baseball All-Stars Johnny Damon and A.J. Pierzynski of the Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago White Sox, respectively. Both players reside in Orlando and took up their gloves to practice with the team.
