"What type of Disney World ticket makes the most sense for me and my family?" is a very common question in Disney World trip planning.

Once the number of days of park admission are decided on, the next question is "Do we want Park Hopper option?" The Park Hopper option allows you to come and go through multiple theme parks on the same day for the entire length of your ticket. Park Hopper currently costs $54 per person per vacation, no matter the number of days on your ticket package.

So, does a Park Hopper make sense for you?

Here are our tips:

For a shorter trip, having a Park Hopper pass gives you more options and flexibility. If you're only at Disney World for 2 or 3 days, but want to hit up all 4 parks, it's a no-brainer. Try some of the half-day touring plans from touringplans.com to maximize your time in each park.

For a longer trip of a week or more, you may want to skip the Park Hopper option, as long as you're OK with sticking to the same park each day. My husband and I opted for this on our week-long honeymoon. If you are planning a longer, more leisurely vacation, then perhaps you could put the money you would have spent on Park Hopper toward a nice table service meal or souvenirs instead.

During the peak times of year, having Park Hopper is actually not always a good idea. It takes a lot of time to switch between parks, and with more crowds and longer lines, you may end up spending more than an hour traveling between parks. So it might be your best bet to utilize the touringplans.com Crowd Calendar to instead plan a full day at the forecasted least crowded park.

Slow times of year is when Park Hopper works best. You can travel quickly between parks. During slower times in spring and fall, special events like the Epcot Food & Wine Festival are taking place, so you may want to stop by Epcot nearly every day at some point for a special event, but go check out other parks at other times in the day. This is an ideal situation for Park Hopper.

Regardless of these tips, many families choose to opt for Park Hopper simply for its value. The per person up-charge is a small price to pay for flexibility, many say.

So, what are your thoughts on the Park Hopper option? Is this a must-do for you, or do you prefer to spend full days in parks? Leave your comment below!

I actually think the opposite - that park hoppers work best for longer stays. On a short stay I wouldn't want to waste the limited time I had moving from park to park - best to pick one and just go for it. But we go for 14 nights and would be lost without the park hopper. In the second week we definitely want to do more than one park in one day - by this point we're just doing our favourite bits again and move around a lot more. Also very useful if you don't want your dining to be restricted by the park you're visting that day. :)

We always do the park hopper. If a park seems full we'll hop to another and often it's empty. If it's raining we'll go over to epcot and do the inoventions type inside things. We can hop to whatever restaurant we want for the evening and hop for all the night time shows. Plus we'll do early EMH and then hop to a less crowded park mid afternoon. It doesn't make sense to us not to get the hopper option.

I think for me it's about the food. I TRY to plan my days around my ADRs.. but I dont want to visit HS for 4 days--and they have such great restaurants there! lol.. we just hop around for meals mostly!
And we usually visit HS and AK in one day anyway..

also, we always find ourselves at EPCOT at the end of the night! Somehow we always end up there!

We have always done the Park Hopper. Dont see any other way of doing it. Like DD... we ALWAYS seem to end up at Epcot at night. Whether its an ADR or just because its usually opened the latest and the less crowded of all the parks.

I wouldn't do Disney without it! We like the flexibility and being able to "fly by the seat of our pants" while doing a variety of things - from high energy to low, or serious to fun. We also like being able to see whichever nighttime extravaganza we want, regardless of which park we were in during the day. The ADRs make it worthwhile, too. If you're staying on the monorail line it seems like there isn't any other option. Sleep late and go to a park on the line, or take a break mid-day and spend the second half of the day in another park. I've never done it otherwise and never will. I mean, seriously... $54? Oh yeah!

Our family always gets the hoppers. Can't imagine not being able to switch parks! Makes dining so much easier. Also, we have our 4-parks-in-one-day tradition for our last day to consider.

We always get the park hopper. Really it isn't that difficult to hop from one park to another once you understand the transportation system. Plus some parks have a few ways of getting to them. For instance you can take a boat from Hollywood Studios to epcot and arrive at the not so busy back entrance. We have found that if one park is too busy then we just head to another. Plus with the dining plan we make reservations all over so for us the park hopper is a must have.

I'll only be there for one day during VidCon. Should I get the Park Hopper? I'm so new to this it's ridiculous. I don't even know what it means by "parks." Are they like different locations, or are they different themed areas within Disney?

Hi Molly!

Walt Disney World is a 43 square mile property. on that property there are four different theme parks, two water parks, 11 resort hotels, a shopping center and several other recreational areas. Each one is separate from the others with a considerable difference in between them.

The Disney Park called the "Magic Kingdom" is what most people think of when you say you're going to "Disney" but it's only a very small portion of what the Disney Company offers. It's the original park built in Orlando, and focuses on "classic" Disney. This is the one that Walt designed, the one with the Castle and all the different "lands."

Other Parks that you could go to for the day are Epcot, which has a cultural and science focus; Hollywood Studios, which is all about movies; and Animal Kingdom, which is a wildlife adventure park with a focus on living animals and conservation.

I don't think that you need a Park Hopper with just a one day visit. I would buy a one day ticket to the Magic Kingdom and take in all you can. Be warned though, there is so much to do that there's no way you'll see it all in one day. Do some more research before your trip, find a Magic Kingdom map online and read about the attractions that you would like to see most and try to focus on those.

I agree with Kristin. If you only have one day, go to Magic Kingdom and try and enjoy yourself without feeling overwhelmed. Much of the negative feedback regarding Disney is that people feel exhausted when they are done and they need a "Vacation after their vacation". I understand they tickets are expensive and the desire to try and cram as much in as possible, but you will sacrifice the enjoyment of the experience. As far as the park hopper option, it is a matter of how many days you have, your approach to vacationing, how busy they parks are, and how experienced you are at the Disney Parks. Here is a great site: http://www.disneyhoppertickets.com/ that has a nice price grid with and without the Park Hopper Option and some good articles helping you weigh the decision points. Relax and have fun!
