Did anyone get the reindeer? My son and girlfriend want a reindeer and Olaf when we return from our trip in Sept. Hoping the hoopla has settled down by then......

I thought for sure when the weather warmed up it would subside, but the hoopla is still going strong around here. We had a pre-season competition for our little girls and they were using Disney music between rotations and I had to promise the little girls a sing-a-long at the end of the competition to get them to stop singing while they were supposed to be warming up.

Just a question, what extras are on the DVD in the US? It came out in Australia a week and a half ago and the only extra is the Mickey short film that they showed before the movie at the cinema. I was kinda disappointed that there was nothing else on it.

Sorry, but they could have deleted the Demi Lovato version for all I care. Once you've Idena Menzel do it, others just lose the "sparkle" IMO....

Our video is off to school since my husband promised the 6th grade choir that if they really worked hard and put on a good concert (last night and they did) they could watch it AND singing along was allowed. Should be ....interesting.

I know Demi Lovato is a Disney alumni but I'm with you Oldtink about Idina Menzel. No one sings it like she does.

I agree. Idina's original has more heart and feel than Demi's in my book. The original version does a better job of conveying the song's main message.

I appreciate Demi's version because she brings her personality to it. Yes it's not the way Idina sang it for the movie but it was still wonderful.

And when my husband asked his MS choir which song they wanted to sing at their promotion next week, they replied "Demi Levato's 'Let It Go' " as well. I am sure it's an age thing as well, although they have watched Menzel's from the Oscars since I wanted them to understand how open the mouth needs to be to really be able to project that much sound. They also thought it was the wrong person since it doesn't sound exactly like the movie version. So, I did some research and sure enough the vocal tracks were slightly altered (they lightened the lower end overtones) to give her a slightly younger sounding voice.....ah well, I think they wanted Menzel's name on the movie more than a newbie with less name weight.

I know why I prefer the Menzel - I am a trained singer (about 25 yrs older) and I really admire her vocal training. It takes a very dedicated trained vocalist to never miss a performance on Broadway. The only show she missed in Wicked is when she fell through the trap door and broke a rib. It's hard to keep the voice healthy. I heard Josh Groban once explain why he only drinks alcohol on a night before an off day, and then no more than two, and has never done drugs or smoked. Each night he performs he HAS to be fully ready vocally or that night, or the next, will not happen. Same for any really good stage performer who does that kind of singing. Okay, enough vocal techniques.

I watched a video where Idina was doing an interview and she said that she was in a happy mood when she recorded Let It Go, since she was in a happy mood, she sang it in a weird key that worked for the movie but hard for her to replicate for live performances. Here is the interview I mentioned

I don't know why people are giving Demi such bad rep for the song. Shes a good artist and sang the song her way with her personality. No one sings the same song exactly alike the last performer. Yes Idina is great at what she does but she's a Broadway star and Demi is a Pop star. I don't think it's really fair to compare the two.

Sorry, I'm just tired of folks saying that Demi is horrible for singing Let It Go because some other person sang the same song.

End rant, I'm Letting It Go now.

I finally got my Olaf!! I give him warm hugs.

For me, it's not that I strongly loathe Demi's version per say but her version has a different vibe and sometimes, having a different vibe or instrumentation in a cover can really alter or not really convey what the main message of the song was supposed to be.

As an example, there's a huge difference between having someone play a techno version of the Star Spangled Banner with turntables and record scratching as opposed to having a trained singer singing with a full orchestra of percussion, winds, strings and brass. With cover versions, at least for me, I feel that artists who are able to establish the balance of making it their own while at the same staying true to what the original song's intent, mood and message make them more respectable. I mean, people don't really compare the movie version of A Whole New World to the Regina Belle and Peabo Bryson's pop version. It's probably because that version still maintains the spirit of the original song but still unique to be different. Music is always subjective no matter how you slice it but today's pop music just isn't the type I enjoy listening so that could be another reason why I prefer Idina's version over Demi's.

I am sorry if I gave the impression that I dislike Ms Levato as a singer. I just PREFER Menzel's performance. It is also her voice through out the movie so we also attach ourselves to her persona. They also just tacked Levato's version at the end of the movie, so we just came from Menzel to her. I never thought that was the best move.

I also love the voice of Angela Lansbury in B and the B, but they tacked Celine Dion (who I do love) on the end as a duet of the same song. Something that never made much sense to me. But eh? cool cool cool

Thanks for sharing the interview, Mandy!
Wow! Menzel thinks her version is high? The standard choral arrangement (that every MS in America is now trying to do) is a step higher and still has a low G. That means she is doing an octave and a 6th! I know she has said that she does not do it in her live shows because it needs the full back up and her traveling show (saw her a couple years ago) isn't that big, but that range is a challenge anyway to do it night after night and stay vocally healthy would challenge the finest. eek

You're welcome. The first version of the song Disney released was Demi's. I really love Demi, probably because I saw her on Disney Channel all the time, but she does have her faults. When she sang the song for the Christmas Day parade, she was really off from the music and I wasn't blown away. I also love Idina. I was super happy when I heard that she was cast for the movie.

I can't see the hype going down...not until the Anna and Elsa coronation event, the merchandise selection is plentiful so that it's not Black Friday 24/7, and/or the wait times for the meet and greets for Anna and Elsa at the parks are at least no more than an hour. Eventually, those jaw dropping 3, 4 even 5 hour wait times will be a thing of the past. The question is, when? I think millions are hoping Big Hero 6 will succeed massively and all the hype from Frozen will transfer from to Big Hero. I want it to succeed because I feel some cynics think Disney only succeeds because of princess movies and Pixar. There hasn't been a non-princess or non-Pixar Disney animated film that was big at the box office since The Lion King, I would argue. And by big, according to my opinions and standards, it makes at least 200 million dollars in the States.

Coronation event? What did I miss?

My DH is a choir director and even at music contest, younger choirs were doing it as their added chosen piece (or frozen piece) and as he put it, " and not well done either." It's hard to put a pop song into choral unless all are doing the pop variations and they want to sing the recording.
I listened to Levato's recording too again, and the kids probably like hers because she doesn't do the full range. Her's is a "reduced range" version, not bad, just different.

I believe they used Demi singing it as a teaser when the movie was first announced before they announced Idina was in the film.
