Survivor: Disney Princesses Edition - aka Grownups like Princesses Too :-)

Jason writing on Gaston makes me think Belle would never go with him even more. Let me lay out my case

1. He is mean to people and acts like a bully.
2. He mocks her reading and doesn't like it " It's not right for a woman to read. Soon she starts getting ideas, and thinking..."
3. He doesn't care about anything BUT beauty
4. His violence at the end is MUCH scarier than the Beast ever is. The hatred and anger in his eyes scared me as a kid. He probably would have gotten abusive if he didn't get his way and Belle is WAY too smart to stick around that.

Arguments for the Beast

1. Yes, she is his prisoner, but...I have never seen someone in such a free "prison"
2. Instead of mocking books, he learns how to read so they can share it.
3. He learns from his arrogance and is always trying.
4. He is actually someone to pity. He has no idea how to deal with women, but he learns.
5. He has a personality that challenges Belle. They can have witty dialogue bicker, but they help each other become better people.

And Gaston is just a prick. He is that mean jock who thinks it is funny to push the smaller, dorky kids around.

But the only reason the Beast truly opens up is because of the people he is around (all the ones who have changed to) and in my opinion... they want to become human again more than the Beast. They were the reason why Belle got out of the dungeon.

Yes, but really, if you had spent years being called The Beast, would you even care anymore either? People have hunted him and mocked him since he was changed, i wouldn't trust anyone else either.

caitiesus, were you bullied at school? genuine question as it would help explain your aparent hatred of the type. I suffered some bullying when young, but now feel sorry for the perpetrators rather than angry and have had couple approach me later in life to apologise.

It's possible that Belle's influence could ultimately have softened Gaston, I guess that's one debate that could run and run unless B&TB2 answered the question.

Why yes I was - people who only have one eye often bullied by the arrogant jocks...including for reading all the time (it is something actually easy for semi-blind people to do). So that type pisses me off to no end. And in real life those types dont change. Ever

It's been awhile since i've voted so I'm going to have to knock Tiana out. I was born in 84 so my favorite princesses definately come from that era of Ariel, belle, Jasmine. Now to just decide which one

I had to knock one off Aurora. I mean seriously the chick was sleep for part of the movie. Talk about about a useless damsel in distress. Still love the movie though. The politics of princess survivor are rough.

As for the great Gaston v. Beast debate, I can't believe there's even a question. Look at my commentary in this week's Jolly Holiday about Gaston (how's that for product placement?). Gaston is the VILLAIN. He's a bully. He's arrogant. He's vain to the point of narcissism. He's not that bright. He's manipulative. He's sneaky. He's mysoginistic. He's shallow. Most important to this "debate" -- he is unmovable and unchanging. Gaston will not change - ever. That's the whole point.
To say anything else is to completely miss the point of the movie - and this is a message I'm pretty sure most of the kids who watch the movie can easily take away from it.

Are people on here REALLY taking the bully's side?

I think you're very wrong, Mase. Gaston doesn't like Belle. He likes the IDEA of her. He likes that she's "the most beautiful girl in town." He didn't give a damn about who she was - in fact, he MOCKS HER because of who she is. ALL he cared about was that she was beautiful and she would make a good trophy (the symbolism on that is CRYSTAL clear -- "I use antlers in all of my decorating").

Say Belle had gone along with him and gotten married. The second he was bored with her, he'd be off after the next beautiful thing. I don't know if you are familiar with it, but a good example of this type of character would be Cinderella's Prince in "Into the Woods." He's very much like Gaston, and Cinderella does marry him. You know what happens in the second act? The second he gets bored with Cinderella, he cheats on her. He continues "THE CHASE" which is all he cares about. He's a predator who, once he gets what he wants, simply goes to the next chase.

Beast was not like that. He was foolish and ignorant, but he had a kind heart. He actually cared about who Belle was - the whole point was he COULD change.

Gaston absolutely would not change.

In Ariel's defense, her movie singlehandedly SAVED Disney Feature Animation. Without Ariel, there'd be no Belle, Jasmine, Giselle, Rapunzel, Tiana, Lion King, Hercules, Mulan, Pocahontas.. and on and on and on...
The company was about to give up after Black Cauldron and Rescuers Down Under... but Roy Jr and Ariel saved them!!

I'm not against Gaston at all. I think he's a fantastic character. One of Disney's best, in fact. He also has some of my favorite lines in the movie.
The avatar also perfectly complements Caitie's since she often says things that lead me to make comments like "there are no pictures" while she looks on disapprovingly. Only difference is - I still get the girl in the end

I'm only against the idea that Belle could change him. I think the idea of Gaston is that as a foil for Beast he shows WHY Beast is so great.

And yeah, I didn't know Beast's name was Adam either!
