Disney Pulls Starbucks Epcot Mug Featuring Purple Monorail

If you visit the Fountain View at Epcot looking to pick up your daily Starbucks fix and one of the Epcot "You Are Here" series coffee mugs, you won't find the mugs on the shelf. Disney pulled the Epcot Starbucks mugs this week because the design included the Monorail with a purple stripe.

In 2009 Monorail Purple was involved in a crash with Monorail Pink and 21-year-old cast member Austin Wuennenberg was killed. Monorail Purple was retired after the accident.

The Epcot mug is part of Starbuck's "You Are Here" series and featured a blue, gray, and purple design with park icons and the Monorail. It debuted at the park earlier in January.

A new Epcot Starbucks mug will be on the shelves soon, without the purple stripe Monorail. Guests can find a similar mug at the Magic Kingdom with a blue, yellow, and gray color palette.

Other "You Are Here" mugs will be available at Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom when the Starbucks open in those parks.

Do you think Disney was correct in pulling the "purple Monorail" mug? Let us know what you think in the comments.

I do not agree with the mug being pulled. When someone was killed on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, the ride was not permanently closed and disassembled with all memories of that ride being destroyed. I and many people have the monorail "toy" with the purple stripe. Are we to trash those? Just my opinion.

How did this get past the branding and approval process. I think it's a bit of hype and Disney could have declared it a memorial edition & donated part of the proceeds to charity

The mugs are fetching over $200 a piece on eBay. I guess the few that made it out of epcot are highly sought after as rare Disney collectibles. I'll wait on the new mug thank you very much.

Any release date set for the new mugs?

Mike - the only release date for the new mugs that we've heard is "soon." Personally I thought it was a really pretty mug and a nice tribute, even if it was an unintentional one.
