Festival of Fantasy Parade Debuts March 9 at the Magic Kingdom with Elaborate Costumes and Floats

When the Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade debuts at the Magic Kingdom on March 9, guests will have a chance to see some of the most elaborate parade costumes ever created by Disney.

The parade is a celebration of Fantasyland, and is the first in a new generation of Disney parades and includes new technology, a new musical score, and floats that are three stories tall.

The Festival of Fantasy parade features nine floats that will travel down Main Street U.S.A. to an all-new soundtrack composed by Mark Hammond " who is known for his work on World of Color of Disney California Adventure.

"The parade celebrates and pays homage to what the Magic Kingdom is all about," said Randy Wojcik, senior show director Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, Creative Entertainment. "It has the most beautiful floats, enchanting characters, vibrant costumes that come to life; and the choreography is just glorious. Yet, it is also very kinetic, relevant and powerful on a scale never seen before at Walt Disney World."

The costumes for the parade are like nothing guests have ever seen in a Disney parade, and were created in 10 costume houses in eight cities and two countries, including the Creative Costuming facilities in Florida and California.

The costumes were created by costume designer Mirena Rada who has designed projects for Disneyland, Tokyo Disney Resort, and Hong Kong Disneyland. This is her first project for a theme park at the Walt Disney World Resort.

"This was a personal first and it turned out to be a very different experience from other projects," said Rada. "Everything here at Magic Kingdom is done on a considerably bigger scale and the resources are aplenty. I took every opportunity to avail myself of these specialties."

The costumes each feature colors and textures from the floats, and Rada studied the style guides of each film to find details and patterns that captured the stories presented in the floats. The costumes also put a modern spin on classic elements, and the designers used new technology to design and print custom fabrics.

I was so hoping the parade would start on Mardi Gras Day (04 March). We will be at Disney from 28 Feb. - 09 March. Many of us Louisianians leave our state during the Mardi Gras week to visit Disney since the kids are out of school the entire week, and we were so hoping the new parade would start while we were there. You know how we like our parades!! Unfortunately, we'll be making the journey back to Louisiana on the day the parade starts, but on the bright side, we'll have something to look forward to when we return at the end of May. And we also have the F&G Festival to look forward to at Epcot while we're there this time. So, it's not all bad news;)
