Lobby at Disney’s Polynesian Resort to Close in March for Renovation

If you're a fan of the lobby in Disney's Polynesian Resort, it's time to say your goodbyes.

The lobby is reportedly closing for renovations in March, and the water feature (and the unique smell that came with it) will likely all be a memory when it reopens.

The Polynesian is undergoing renovations ahead of the opening of a Disney Vacation Club section next year. As part of these ongoing renovations, the Wyland Gallery and the Great Ceremonial House have closed, reportedly to make room for expanded dining options.

According to reports, Captain Cook's will also be closing in March for renovations, with an expected reopen date sometime in June.

There is no official word yet from Disney regarding the closing of the Polynesian lobby or the possibility of additional dining locations at the resort.

I know that there are series issues with the aging lobby, but I'm honestly nervous about the changes that are coming. I do hope that it continues to be one of my favorite places.

We were there a few months ago, and I thought at the time that it was due for a refresher. It just seemed a little tired... reminded me of when the Brady Bunch went to Hawaii.

I visited the Poly for my first time last October to dine at O'Hana, and I loved this lobby! I was really amazed by it, esp the water feature and the torches. So this is a shame. I had hoped to stay there next trip based on our few hours hanging around.

No water feature???? Every trip we take a family photo there on the night we dine at Ohana's. Please say it isn't so!

This makes me sad … I've enjoyed that lobby since I was a child… the water feature (and the smell that always brings me back to being there with my grandparents) will be missed!

I am so sorry to hear of the upcoming changes. I have been staying at the Polynesian almost every year since my daughter was 8 years old. She is now married and 31 years old. She is expecting her first child in June and we were anticipating taking her daughter when she turns 3 to Disney to stay at the Polynesian. We have very fond memories.

Part of our memory was the smell when you first walked into the lobby. With the upcoming change I would imagine that will be disappearing.

I am sure the change is needed and will be beautiful, but for us, it brings
some sadness.

The Polynesian resort is now ruined. The lobby was a grand gathering place for guests and groups, something that inspired a very tropical and Polynesian feel. It was the heart and soul of the resort. In addition, the sight lines and views from the resort and beach are now ruined by the blight of the bungalows that extend out into the water towards Magic Kingdom. For shame.

Let me also say, that yes the rooms and guest buildings themselves needed major renovations, much higher ceilings, updated decor, updated/larger elevators, perhaps new buildings altogether. But the grand lobby and the beach views were the soul of the resort, those along with the tropical plants and themes made this resort. Now ruined.
