"Pirates" Nears $1 Billion Haul

"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" was the fourth installment of the popular series from Disney, and, if worldwide gross is any indicator, the series hasn't lost much steam. The film has been projected to crack the $1 billion mark and would be only one of seven films to claim this distinction.

Executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer had this to say about the continued success of the series:

People want to see something fresh and something new, and with the mermaids in this one the writers really delivered. This undoubtedly proves the staying power of this franchise " and, of course, the popularity of Johnny Depp.

Disney has a few other movies in the $1 billion club: an earlier "Pirates" film ("Dead Man's Chest") as well as the more recent "Toy Story 3" and "Alice in Wonderland."
