Several Road Improvements Planned for the Walt Disney World Resort

If you have ever driven your car around the Walt Disney World Resort or been stuck in traffic on a Disney Parks bus you know that road congestion is a big problem. But several road improvement projects are planned and will accommodate the attendance growth and parking issues Walt Disney World.

The Walt Disney World Speedway recently closed and crews have been spotted working on demolition of the Speedway to make room for an expanded parking area at the Ticket and Transportation Center.

Guests staying at the Magic Kingdom-area hotels will eventually use a "flyover" loop to access the hotels rather than driving through the Magic Kingdom's toll plaza. Currently guests at hotels including the Contemporary and Disney's Polynesian Village Resort have to deal with the lines at the toll plaza but don't have to pay to get through.

Another project is the reconfiguration of Osceola Parkway at Victory Way with a flyover that will take Osceola Parkway traffic over Victory Way. This area is located southeast of Disney's Hollywood Studios and north of the ESPN Wide World of Sports.

Western Way to Avalon Road will also be extended and a Center Drive bypass will be added allowing traffic headed south off Reams Road more access to Floridian Way.

Funding for the road projects is coming from a $350 million bond issue by Reedy Creek which is the Disney-controlled taxing district. All improvements are expected to be completed within the next five years.

What do you think about the planned road improvements at Walt Disney World Resort? Let us know in the comments.

Love the mentioned road upgrades. Although, How/Why is there not an expansion with the monorail system? It would be so cool to have another monorail/monorail station that shuttles between the new Disney Springs to Animal Kingdom areas and somehow tie into a stop at Epcot or the TTC. That way you could be anywhere on Disney property to access the monorail. Plus, this would give some relief to the bus system with expected growth. I have wondered this for the past few years and had hopes that in the near future a monorail expansion would be possible. Ramp up the cool Disney transportation factor. Fingers always crossed. :-)

I guess those heavy rumors from 2007-2009 about monorail expansion are definitely not coming to fruition. At least they're doing something about the traffic though.

They need to fix Disney Vacation Club Way, especially right near OKW castmember entrance. There has been a hole there for months, if not years. With all the buses going that way to and from DTD/Disney Springs, it is getting worse.
