booking outside your home resort

Well it will be our first time looking to stay outside our home resort
We did get booked outside our home resort on one trip as several of the Grand villas at okw were being updated during one of our planed trips so they asked us if we wouldn't mind a two bedroom and a one bedroom at ssr
We are looking at the magic or the dream season in 2015

I guess my first choice would be blt then akv the the Grand floridian followed by the boardwalk looking at doing 8 possibly 9 nights

Hi there!

I've had okay luck booking outside my home resort, though I haven't always gotten my first choice of where to stay. I always book 11 months out at my home so that I know I have a room no matter what, and then I switch the reservation when I hit the 7 month mark. BLT is one of the more difficult resorts to switch in to into (depending on time of year) but AKV almost always has rooms because the property is so large.

Our first booking was Nov. 30-Dec. 10 and we were not able to switch to any place that I preferred over Saratoga (Boardwalk, Beach Club, Wilderness, BLT). We could have switched to OKW, but that was pretty much it. For our upcoming trip April 5-9, it was very easy to switch to Boardwalk. I've been told that the DVC "value seasons"--January, September, October, and the first half of December--can be difficult times to switch. Many DVC families take advantage of the low number of points required to book during these times, so availability decreases. Also, the shorter the time span, the easier it generally is to switch. If you can't find 8-9 nights at the same resort, consider a split stay. You get to see two great resorts and you stand a better chance of getting to spend some time at your "must do" resort.
