Breaking The Streak - Will NOT Be Attending the Trading Celebration This Year

I posted this on the WDWForGrownUps main News page, mainly because I thought it was a topic of discussion on the forum, but it turns out they are not directly connected!

Having attended the Yearly Pin Celebration, and now Trading Celebration, since 2005, I'll be breaking that streak this year and will not be attending the 13 Reflections of Evil event. The streak will end at 8 straight years!

I truly am disappointed at the direction that pin trading event, and pin trading in general, has taken. There is clearly a feeling that Disney is less interested in nurturing and supporting this line of merchandise nowadays. In some sense, it is OK by me because I am spending significantly less on pins these past couple of years than I did before. But I also see less excitement on this hobby. I'm finding that I am seeking more and more of the older pins than the new ones being released. The new pin designs are just, on average, not as exciting and inspiring than they were before.

Oh well.... so no trip report from this years celebration!

That's a shame Zapper. I know how much you enjoy pin trading. I am someone who really doesn't collect anything. I think it's because I am 3rd in line on the sibling tree and I had to give away things I wanted to keep due to lack of room...add your adjective here.

Disney has created utter confusion among those planning on attending this Trading Celebration event, and in the process, may have annoyed a lot of people.

Many of us reading this came to the conclusion that we have to pay for each day that we intend to attend this event. Of course, this is outrageous considering that the previous year, you pay barely $100 to attend 2-days of pin trading. Now they are making you pay close to $200 to attend the same 2-days (without attending the Vinylmation event).

However, there are those who think Disney may have screwed up the wording, that the registration that has been designated for Friday (Club 13 Event Package) is actually for both days - Friday and Saturday, while the one for Saturday (Pin trading showcase package) is for those who only want to attend one day of pin trading on Saturday. The Vinylmation event is still separate for Sunday.

This may make it better, but I am shocked that, if this is truly a mistake, that something like this went through unchecked. I have a few people that are currently trying to verify this with Disney. Still, whatever it is, it doesn't change the fact that I won't be attending this event. And from what I've heard from my pin trading friends, a few others who often go to this yearly event will also not be making this trip.

That's so sad to hear! I'm really sorry, I hope that you'll still plan a fantastic vacation to replace the event.

So, what I'm hearing is that the event cost has almost tripled, and the merchandise that they've previewed is uninspired? Do you think that it's just this particular event, or have you noticed the merchandise getting worse over the past few events?

The event cost have tripled if Disney actually meant what we read literally on the webpage. We are still awaiting confirmation that this is what they meant. There are hopes that what they actually mean is that the $113 registration for "Friday" is actually the registration fee for both Friday and Saturday. But we are still waiting for a reply back from them. If it is the latter, then the cost hasn't change that much.

I have noticed that the merchandise for the Pin Celebration event has gotten worse the past 3 or 4 years. I used to spend close to $500 buying pins released at these events. The past 3 or 4 years, I've spent barely even $200, with last year's being the smallest (~$150). There are less pins, uninspired designs, and just lack of fun themes. They just can't hit another home run anymore like the Mickey's Scoop pin from a few years ago.
