Brilliant Idea

Ok, so as you guys know I'm 15. I have a part-time job a lifeguard which is ending soon, which means little to no money coming in for me until I turn 16 unless I can find a lifeguard job at an indoor pool. However, I will have about $1,00 saved up when my job ends, which doesn't include the other $1,000 in my bank (most of that is money my parents saved for me). My parents are buying me a (temporary, not going to go into details on that) car when I turn 16, so that way I can get a part-time job at a restaurant or wherever else when I am 16 and save up for my own car when I go to college.

By the end of the summer I may have about $1,850 (not including the bank money). Enough for a trip to one to WDW.

I just wanted to see what you guys thought of the idea. Would I be crazy to spend all that money on a trip for myself to WDW at 16? My parents would let me do it, but I'm not sure it would be the right choice for me, seeing that I'm going to need a car in August and all. If I went on a trip I'd go sometime in 2013 after I get a job and I'd get on the payment plan so that I don't have to pay it all at once. What do you guys think? Am I crazy?

FYI: I turn 16 on January 9th next year.

Have you ever looked into writing sports articles on Hubpages? Its a free site that allows you to publish articles on anything and everything and you can earn revenue through hooking a google adsense account up to your Hubpage account. I've been using it on and off for over a year now and it's slowly turning into a nice little earner, just a thought to help boost your savings and get your sports writing noticed.

Back on topic - wow, as much fun as a trip will be it sounds like your going to need the car more for college / further work so you might be better putting your savings towards that, but this is me trying to be 'grown up' about it lol!

I hate to say, but Disney isn't going to let check into a hotel on your own prior to you turning 18. It's an industry standard, and Disney falls on the lenient side, but it's still 18. Many off property hotels won't let you check in sooner than 21. It's not about what your parents would let you do, or how mature you are, but rather what Disney's legal team will allow them to accept.

Depending on the dates you travel, you may be able to take your Mom with you on that same budget.

Forgot about that...but yeah I have thought about bringing my Mom as well. IT depends on how much money I can save and what not. Her birthday is in the middle of May (right after Mother's Day), so maybe I can surprise her with a Disney trip! Who knows! Again, just depends on the job/money I have saved and the whole car situation. We'll see. I want to see what other people on the boards thing of the idea as well. What specials do they typically have in May? Anything? I probably won't be able to book that early (maybe two months at the earliest).

That's interesting. I already have a large following on Titter (like I said) so my articles would get views = money. I do write for iConFantasySports.com, about an article a day, which is a growing sports social network, but there's very little profit right now, so not much money for me, but I do get to get into a lot of money fantasy leagues for free! I'll have to check out Hubpages when I get home from school tonight! Also, I had AdSense hooked up on my blog when I was writing on there (theffaddict.com), but that site is abandonded. I feel like I was putting in too much work writing everyday and wasn't satisfied with the amount of views I was getting (typically less than 100 per article), so I called it quits. on there for now.

I was going to say the same thing. Anyways why not share the fun.
That said, I would say that since you are paying for the room why not include a parent or friend. The room is same for two as it is for one, you are just paying for the tickets. Share the fun yay

I don't know about specials they run in May. I never really pay that much attention to the spring, we always travel during the holidays. We did travel may of 2010 on free dining but our free dining was included in our moderate resort not value.

As far as should you do it.... I am on both sides of the fence. The disney fan in me says go for it. You can always work through the summer and make more. The mom in me says Save you money and save it for your future needs. However, the disney fan still whispers go, go, go, go. How about you work through the summer, save even more money and get enough for a fun vacation in the fall during free dining and still add to your bank account.

just another crazy non committal thought on my part. There is no real yes or no there huh? Lets just says I feel you. It would be more fun to say heck with it and just go.

I would take you with us if it were possible. but I would be killed my by "niece" who has been begging to go for 3 years with us. Hang in there you will get there.

That's not a bad idea, the whole waiting. Next year I'll be a senior, 16 YO, I'll have a car, and a lot more money saved up with a job all the the time. Plus, as far as I know, we don't have a vacation for next winter, so that might actually be the best time to go as we are going on a cruise in Feb. this year and traveling around the midwest next year (Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, for two weeks). As exciting as both of those sound, it's still not Disney!

So I'll definitely keep saving and keep working (well, I'll try to work anyways if I can find a job silly ) and maybe I'll get to treat myself next year. I'll just have to wait and see how it plays out. I'll certainly take someone with me (mom, grandma, aunt)because all I'm paying for is park tickets and the flight. Thanks for the advice, and even more for thinking of taking me with you! That is so thoughtful, but I definitely don't want to see your niece go on a rampage laugh

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep watching these boards (I'm getting addicted, doesn't everyone once they come here?), crossfingers, and keep dreaming of mickey mickey mickey !!!!

It's no guarantee of what will happen in the future, but in May this year we got a 25% discount on the room price for POR. Maybe they will offer the same thing next year too.

Probably going to go in the fall of 2013 (if at all), so FREE DINING! I'm sure they'll still have that..they've had that forever. That'll be awesome if it works out that way.

The old saying "Don't count your chickens before there hatched" comes to mind.

Just looked it up for prices if I went this December and stayed at Coronado Springs during the free dining for a 6-day, 7-night. the cost was $2,600 with flights. I thought that was actually pretty good, and packaging the fights is actually saving me around $400 total, which is crazy good for two people. That's a pretty penny for me! Again, depends on where I am money wise when this comes around. I'd like to have about $3,000 saved up next Summer if I was going to book this trip.
