Can't decide

I am planning a trip to WDW Jan 2-10 or Jan 3-11, 2014 for my 40th birthday. yay
I can't decide if I want to drive or fly. I have been looking at airfare prices just to kind of get an idea and they are ridiculous, especially for 3 of us. My sister is going with us, so there will be four of us and we can fit into my Honda and get pretty good gas mileage. (It has a pretty big trunk too for all of our luggage. We drove in Dec 2010 and I had a Dodge Durango and from Oklahoma to Orlando and back we spent $500 in gas which we split and gas was outrageous. Right now flying I am most likely looking at 1000 or more. Angry I have miles I could use but they are never good flights and I have a buy one get one free voucher, but again I am afraid they won't be good flights and/or I may not be able to get the same flight with the miles and the voucher.
I will be off work from the 1st until the 12th so I have plenty of time to drive and still get in the same time I want at WDW.
Another good thing of driving is I can split it because my parents live in Pensacola, FL and I can use that as a stopping point, sleep and get up as early as we want and finish the 6-7 hours down to Orlando.

I just can't decide. I need a little push, opinions etc to get me to decide so I can adjust my budget soon!

Thanks in advance!

We're drivers, so we will push you in that direction! DRIVE!! Flying is too much of a hassle for us anymore, so when we can drive, we do.

The cost of airfare is so cumbersome when you have a big group of people. I love to fly, but more and more lately they are making the experience miserable. I have a large family, with 5 of us going in June and we're driving because of the cost of flying. Plus, road trips are fun... right?

I say drive, especially if you can get a good night's sleep at your parents' house along the way. It will certainly ease the trip.

Friends of mine are there now. They drove down from NJ, switching driving for naps and only stopping for meals. It was apparently pretty rough on them, my friend said that they're probably going to take the cost of a motel room along the way back. But, it was still way cheaper and less of a hassle than flying.

Hm. It's a toss up. I'd say go with the cheaper option!

I am from Pensacola, FL too!! How funny!

Eeyore I have family that lives in Pensacola - I was there over the Thanksgiving holiday. My brother was in the Navy. What branch of service is your husband affiliated with and I want to thank him for his service and for your love and support of him!

Well, I guess I will be flying. My sister said she won't go if we drive. I know she can fly, but I want us all together. Hopefully by fall I will be able to find reasonable airfare and times I can live with.

Aww, thank you! He is in the North Carolina Army National Guard. He isn't full time Army, he has a regular civilian job but his number was called up in 2012!

I have been patiently waiting since he left! haha

We are also still deciding on whether or not to drive or fly...I'm watching plane ticket prices. Make sure you check out SouthWest Air because the first 2 bags you check are FREE!!! I am excited because they are starting direct flights from Charlotte to MCO in April!

My friend and I will be going the end of September. I will have to keep my eye on Southwest because of the free checked bags. Thanks for the reminder! mickey

I'm going sort of off subject in a way
Whenever we go to Florida my husband always asks (when chatting to Americans) - where you're from/how did you get there/ how long did it take
He is so so interested in the answers and is amazed how many people drive such long distances
I've just read out your original post Liz and he's googling the distances 1273 miles = twenty hour going through six states!!

Sorry I've been no help really but whatever you decide you'll love your holiday that's for sure laugh

I have always thought a big difference between and America and England is that in the UK people think 200 miles is a long distance. In the US, most people think 200 Years is a long time. wink
