Dang..There Goes That Song Again...

Good Morning Everyone..I'll never forget my first ride on " It's a small world." ..My DS was just over 6 at the time and even hours later he was still singing the song...Now on our last trip in 2012 he was desperate to do " The carousel of progress." And yes, hours later he would turn round to his mum and sing " There's a great big beautiful tomorrow " ..LOL...Later on that night just before nodding off to Neverland, both of us would start singing the carousel song, much to the annoyance of Mrs Fergus..Have you a favourite song at Disney, that's so catchy, you just keep singing it.?

I have lots! carousel of progress is one of the culprits and my mother will usually get a random message with the words on - or better yet a full blown song version if she is within hearing distance!

I'm also partial to singing the parade songs - move it, shake it, celebrate it, celebrate a dream come true parade (don't know the festival of fantasy song yet!), jammin' jungle parade

actually the more I'm writing this any parade, show, attraction with a song - I sing it repeatedly!!!

so in conclusion yes I do this too!

Right now I find myself singing the Carousel of Progress song quite a bit.

The reason is that last week was the 50th anniversary of the opening of the 1964-65 New York World's Fair, and the Carousel of Progress was a highlight of my visits to the fair. (So was It's a Small World, but I've been trying to track down accurate info and period photos of the Carousel's original 1960s final scene, hence my obsession with the Carousel song.)

Not any one particular song....but when we were in the lines , we would sing whatever song went along with that ride until we got to the next one. So ...Under the Sea for the Little Mermaid....or ..You've Got a Friend in Me for Buzz Lightyear .... Beauty and the Beast...Be Our Guest. Etc...

We are a theatrical family ( I teach it, my son is a lighting designer and my daughter is studying film) so breaking into song is not unusual for us and when we are inspired by what we see it's even more fun!! muchlove

Boo to You. In your head after one parade, could take weeks to get it out.

^^^^This one for me when we went. I was walking around the parks and about the time I would finally forget about it, it would start playing on the main speakers and I was off again!

Also like Ms. Mouse, whatever song was playing, I was belting it out!

My Carousel of Progress Song is not "Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" but I do indeed sing the Carousel of Progress Song all the time. My Carousel of Progress Song is "Now is the time, Now is the best time, Now is the best time of your life!" I really wish they would bring it back.

eek

But that's not the ORIGINAL song! That's like me saying Enchanted Tiki Birds Under New Management is better just because it's the first version I ever saw.

I will endeavor to convince you that the original "Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" is the right song for the ride at this time.

It's all about Walt Disney.

Seriously.

When Uncle Walt assigned the Sherman brothers to write the song for the Carousel of Progress, he gave them a huge list of requirements. It must be just long enough to sing during the transition from one scene to the next. It must be about progress and the future (it was, after all, designed for the GE Progressland pavilion at the World's Fair). And it must be suitable for arrangement as a 1900's ragtime piece, a 1920's jazz tune, a 1940's swing song, and a song typical of the mid-1960s. And all four versions must mesh together almost seamlessly as the carousel turns. Tall order.

So the Sherman brothers started thinking. Uncle Walt was a futurist, always looking toward the next bigger and better thing. They started playing around and came up with...

Walt has a dream, and that's the start
We follow his dream with mind and heart

Of course, the song couldn't actually be about Walt Disney, so the lyrics became "Man has a dream...he follows his dream...." The rest of the song progressed from there.

To see Richard Sherman explain this, visit the following YouTube page. The section about the song runs from 29:20 through 33:05.

That's all awesome, and there's nothing wrong with Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow - but it's still not the one that gets stuck in my head. biggrin

Kristen, it's all good, but you're usually such a Disney purist that I was amazed to learn you'd rather have the replacement song that was basically written because General Electric didn't want people to wait until tomorrow to buy new refrigerators. I understand, though, that since that was the first song you ever heard at Carousel of Progress it's the one that has the most meaning for you.

As for me, I want them to go back to the original 1960s final scene. That 90s one is so outdated, whereas the 60s scene would be more like history now.

One Little Spark from Journey Into Imagination. All day everyday. Also the "How do you do? Mighty pleasant greetin'!" song from Splash Mountain is super catchy and gets stuck in my head all the time.

LOL! I am, it's true. I'm not sure if it is the first Carousel of Progress I heard but it's certainly the one that has stuck in my memory the most. I completely agree with the final scene issues, it can be difficult to watch these days. I would like to see the 60's scene again as well.

Other than Small World, I'd have to say A Pirate's Life for me from POTC can get a little too repetitive for my tastes.....Love the ride with all my heart, but could I hear Hoist the Colors or He's a Pirate in the queues at least once to spice it up just a bit?

We are soooo there too! My DH and I are music teachers and performing vocal and instrumental musicians as are our sons who actually have careers in other fields, so we not only break into song, we do it in harmony. Sometimes we get some looks and sometimes even applause. DS2 thinks it's worthy of a hat for tips but we just push on!
For me it's not the melody of Small World as I am really into the lyrics and the meaning behind them, so if you are there in Sept, we are going with our best friends who make us a mixed quartet and as soon as we get them trained watch for our appearances. LOL! yeah yeah yeah yeah

WAit! That HORRIBLE midi music that they brought back for the electric parade (what ever it's called this month). It is 36 measures long (DS2 counted it0 and then as we took the DME back to the airport, guess what song was playing on loop!!!!! Not nostalgic in the least.

LOVED the old one and we have a recording of it. Last time we saw the parade, DS2 just popped on his headphones and smiled. laugh
