Does anyone else find face characters a little weird?

I was going to mention this in the Akershus post, but I thought it deserved its own thread. When I'm eating and even when I'm interacting with them in the parks, I always feel kind of weird about interacting with the face characters. I'd much rather have someone in a costume. Is anyone else this way?

I do feel this way a bit. I just can't get to the full "believing in the magic" think when I've read what it's like behind the scenes at Disney!

Plus, you never know if they're going to be totally "in character" or if they're going to talk to you like another regular person! It throws me for a loop!

I always feel like it's when I used to take my students on the haunted hayride. The workers there always ignored the adults because it's just a little awkward - no adult can convince themselves that they're really meeting Aladdin or Belle. Of course, 'we're not meeting Mickey or Goofy either, but the extra level between us at least makes it a little bit easier not to feel so ridiculous dealing with them in an odd way...

I think this describes my feelings best. That essentially the giant costume covering your head makes it easier to interact. With face characters I always just want to ask them how their day is going and if they're tired. silly

So, here's my tactic for next time: I'm just going to talk to them and ask them questions about their "story" from their movie. Like, I'll ask Jasmine how many tigers she has besides raja and I'll ask Belle if she has a rose garden now that she's living with the Beast. Yeah. That'll pass the time! I wonder if they're allowed to make things up like that.

PsychoAlice -- I've heard that Alice and the Mad Hatter can get a little crazy at Disneyland. I wonder if they're allowed to be a little more sarcastic because the movie itself is pretty bonkers.

That's interesting. Has anyone interacted with the DL Mad Hatter?

Engaging in character-centric conversation is a great way to assist your suspension of disbelief. Chatting with Alice about the whereabouts of the Mad Hatter will work much better than asking her how long she's had on that uncomfortable dress, for example.

edit: I'm going to take my own advice on our next trip and really go out of my way to 'get into it'.

Me too! Great points, you guys! I've never thought of doing that. I'll brainstorm questions for them the next time I hit the character meals.

Just found this post while searching for something else. I'm probably in the minority here - but I'm just the opposite. I am FAR less comfortable with costumed characters. I'm so aware that someone is in that costume, and what are they thinking? Are they rolling their eyes at me? It's this sort of, "They can see me, but I can't see them" thing. A power shift that I'm uncomfortable with. Clearly, I've thought about this too much!

I honestly love meeting all of the princesses, for whatever reason its fairly easy for me to get caught up in the "magic" and believe I'm really meeting them. That's never been a problem for me.

So I know this is an old thread but... oh well, LoL.
I have actually! He was cracking jokes cause he tried to hand my autograph book to Alice but she was to busy dancing. Then the White Rabbit started dancing and Hatter was all flustered. Also at DL Hatter leads kids in musical chairs. Usually Alice and Peter Pan will join in. It's really cute and very funny. I'll try to find a video to share.

Honestly.. I feel a little strange with all characters cause, I'm an adult! I often wonder if they think I'm crazy going up and asking for a picture and autograph or something like that. It's not enough to stop me however, LoL.

I personally like the face characters better than the ones who are fully costumed.
But I've also spent my last three summers working at a renaissance faire, so I'm used to talking to people who are in character.
