DVC - best resale options

I am thinking of buying into DVC. I've done some research and it seems that most people (current owners) recommend buying resale over buying straight through Disney.

Can anyone help by letting me know some websites for trustworthy DVC resalers?

I'll dredge my memory and see which are the good resale sites. Disney is doing everything in their power however to make resale as unattractive as possible. I think it's still the way to go from what I understand, but they recently made some changes to make it less appealing. Let me check with my sources!

I'm a DVC Owner who bought directly through Disney and I was more than happy with my purchase. You may sometimes be able to get a lower cost through resale, however you can't use your points to their full advantage when purchasing that way because Disney has recently restricted what resold points can be used for.

Hey J.P., read this very carefully before doing anything http://www.mousesavers.com/dvc.html . We are DVC owners and bought from Disney directly twice, never from a reseller. Just be very, very, careful. The amount of fraudulent sellers out there is ridiculous.

HI mrhub. I'm getting a page not found error when I click on the link. It's the period at the end. When I remove it, the page comes up.

We are timeshare owners - NOT DVC owners. All three of our current timeshares, along with one that we've since resold ourselves, were resales. We paid a fraction of what the resort would have charged and got all the same benefits as people who did buy directly from the resort. For most timeshare purchases, resale is the way to go.

However, based on everything I've read and heard, that does NOT work for DVC. If saving money is your primary concern, buy a resale at a non-DVC timeshare resort near Disney World - there are dozens, including one on Disney property (Bonnet Creek). If DVC is what you want, buy from Disney.

I am a DVC owner and I have purchased from Disney and added on more points from Disney and everything went as smooth as silk. As far as I am concerned it's the only way to buy. I even made a lasting frienship with my DVC rep and I make it a point to see and talk to him every time I am down there, unfortunately he was so good that he was recently promoted and is no longer into the selling portion of DVC (but I still have his cell phone #) I now have a new rep. but have not seen him yet. To sum it up I heartily reccomend buying direct from DVC.

Vettelover makes a really important point. You need to get along with and trust your DVC Guide. I talk to, email, and stop in to see my Guide frequently (she's at the Chicago sales center). She has become a friend. I trust her to be sure that my family is getting the best DVC membership for us. She has actually talked us out of sales because she knew that it wouldn't fit well with the way we use our points. My DVC Guide is one of the things that has made being a DVC member so fantastic for me. I know that I wouldn't have that if I had bought resale.

If I remember right..... and I cant remember all of the details, but Disney is going to be cracking down on resellers and people who use those points. They will only be able to do certain things. Like I said... I cant remember the specifics, my Dad knows all the details from one of his forums. Maybe someone else here knows about it. But I say go direct.

If I recall correctly, people who buy resale will only be able to use their points at DVC Resorts. There will be no exchange value for them at RCI or the Concierge Collection. I'm not sure about the other Disney option exchanges, I can't remember.

Resales can only use points at DVC resorts and for RCI transfer, not Concierege, ABD or Cruise.

When it's time we'll probably go resale route. Timeshare store and dvcrental.com both seem to have good reputations.

Thank you everyone for all your input!
I went to a DVC meeting while I was at the World last week (Yay!). We had decided to go to one before our trip even started because we love Disney World so much. The main reason I was thinking of resale was because our rep told us that they had no availability at Boardwalk or in OKW. Those were the resorts I'd prefer to have as a home resort.

Our rep told us what Katrina said. I don't plan on going anywhere other than DVC resorts so it's not an issue for me.

I am torn though because I'd prefer to buy from Disney directly as I trust them as a company. Our rep didn't make much of an impression on us, but it sounds like many of you have had amazing experiences with them!

Have any of the DVC owners here had problems with booking non-home resorts at the 7 months or less mark?

I personally have never had a problem booking trips at the seven month window and my home resort is SSR but I have booked 7 months out at OKW, AKL, BW, WL, and Vero Beach, and what SHOULD make it more difficult for me is that I always book for a 2 week period and in a studio (which they have fewer of).

That's funny! I also am looking to book two weeks at a time in a studio!

Do you book in off seasons? I usually will plan to go in May or September.

I usually book between October and February. We are annual pass holders so I always Book the first vacay say in Feb. for example and the next year I go in Jan. so that way we get four weeks on our APs a MUCH better deal than park hopper passes etc.

I have kind of a naive question..what if you own DVC and you get in a bit of a financial strain and you have to sell DVC? Is it impossible to "sell" with these resale constrictions they are placing?

Sounds like your rep also didn't tell you that you can buy through Disney at sold out resorts, it just takes a little longer to do. Because Disney gets the right of first refusal on all resale contracts, they keep a wait list of people who want to buy at the older resorts. To be on the wait list you *have* to have your financing ready to go at a moments notice.

So, say you put your name on the wait list for OKW. You would have the financing waiting... as soon as Disney got an opening at OKW they would push through your sale right away. It might be weeks, it might not be for months, but they will get you what you want. You may not even know that it happens until the ball is already rolling, going on that wait list is the same as making the sale, you just don't know when it will happen. It's *really* important when you buy this way to have your funding someplace that you know it's not being touched for anything but that sale.

I would be more than happy to hook you up with my Guide, I've helped several people switch over to her already. Let me know!

I booked at 7 months for this weekend and was not able to get my resort of choice, but I did get a room.

Yes, that's what a resale is. The company's I listed are acting as an agent for a DVC owner.

If you look at what's available closely you'll see not only the price per point for a resort, but if there are any banked points or points due to be coming soon because their Use Year is coming up soon. So sometimes you are getting points for 'free' if it has banked points. For example someone owns 150 pts at SSR but didn't use them last year, that means that contract has 300 points to use right away. On the other hand you may find 150 at SSR for the same price/point where the owner used last year and this year and won't get a new 150 points until their next use year which may be a year off.

You can also buy a resale directly from someone I believe.

In either case you make the offer to buy, if the owner accepts your resale goes to DVC who has the right of first refusal. If they think it's too low or they want the points to resell themselves they can force the owner to sell back to DVC instead. From what I've read this generally doesn't happen, but disney has become more picky as of late. If you lose the offer you can just find another one and go through the process again.

This is why buying direct from dvc has advantage...imediate purchase, otherwise unless you plan on using your swapping rights a resale is significantly cheaper.

My thing is... its only worth it if you have most of the money for it. I dont see the point in paying on it while going. We basically had ours payed off. But... we didnt go to Disney for 10 years because of it to save up. But yeah... like katrina said.... thats what the resale sites are for. Even renting out your points too.

Not impossible to sell, but similar to drop in new car value, once you drive it off the lot. For example, to purchase BWV contract direct from Disney, is currently $115/pt. Going rate on resale market for same contract, is $65-$70/pt(we purchased BWV resale in 2006 @ $82/pt). The recent restrictions imposed, have impacted the resale values to some degree.

Here are a couple sites for comparison pricing of direct vs resale:

Thanks for the advice everyone. The debate between direct from disney vs. resale is still on but we have a bit before we're thinking of purchasing. The savings from resale is just so tempting.
