DVC cancellation question

I just got the ok to be able to go to Princess again next February yay I'd like to book now to make sure I have a room but I just want to make sure I understand the cancellation policy correctly just in case (registration does sell out quickly for Princess Shock )

Here is what the DVC site says about modifying/cancelling 31 days or more, which I would be doing

if the new reservation uses fewer Vacation Points than the original reservation, the remaining Vacation Points will be returned to your account in the Use Year in which the reservation falls.

All Vacation Points used to make the reservation will be returned to your account in the Use Year in which the reservation falls.

Our use year is February. My reservation for Princess would be for February 2017. Am I correct in understanding that if I did modify/ cancel, the points would return to my 2017 use year?

Yay for going back for the Princess, I think it is going to be my first 10k! After all the 5k races this year, I am ready to step up!

I was a bit confused reading it too. I like to let Joe handle all that stuff LOL... Look forward to the answer!

If you're using current Use Year points to book the reservation, you'll get the points back in that same year. If you borrowed points, they'll be permanently stuck in the Use Year where the canceled trip falls. If your Use Year is February, you'll probably be fine because surely you'll be going to WDW within 12 months of the race. If your Use Year is March or April and they were banked or borrowed points, you may run out of time to use them.

For example, I borrowed points from 2017 (Use Year March) for our meet-up trip in October. There's a slim possibility that I might have to cancel that reservation. If I do, those points will be valid March 1, 2016 - February 28, 2017. Even though I would have originally been able to use those points from March 1, 2017-February 28, 2018, they will now expire on February 28, 2017.

Hope that helps--I feel like there's no way to explain this without it being confusing.

My use year is February. I'm not sure if I'm technically borrowing the points or not lol. I'd be using 2017's points but booking now. I'm pretty sure I'll be fine crossfingers I plan on going in the Fall 2017 anyway awesome

You're good, Spook! If you're currently booked in February 2017 on 2017 points with a February Use Year, you could cancel if necessary let those points go back into 2017 and you would have until January 31, 2018 to use them.
