Family Reunions

I am very excited about my upcoming family reunion. The reunion consists of decendants of my great-grandma, her two sisters and brother. When the siblings came over from Italy in the early 1900's they first settled in West Virginia in the Fairmont area. Eventually the siblings split up - one sister and the brother stayed in Fairmont, one sister moved to Cleveland and my great grandparents moved to a town 30 miles south of Pittsburgh. The reunions started 40 years ago (maybe 41 now). We alternate the location of the reunion to the areas where the siblings raised their families and is held the first full weekend of August. This year's reunion is being held at the Sawmill Creek Resort in Sandusky, OH on August 5-7.

We have a family banquet on Saturday night and a family meeting. During the meeting we discuss money in the treasury, any old business and any new business. Also during the meeting someone will volunteer to organize the following year's reunion. Everyone pays for their own rooms and dinner. We pay annual dues to pay for snacks, paper goods, deposits, etc for the reunion weekend.

Does anyone have annual family reunions? I would love to hear about your family traditions.

Does every birthday, wedding, anniversary, Easter, Christmas, summer vaca count?

Everyone gets together for EVERYTHING.

I love it

That's awesome. My immediate and extended family is so spread out we can't do that. There are 18 grandchildren on my dad's side of the family (15 first cousins, my two brothers and myself). I don't ever remember a time when all 18 of us were together at the same time.

My Mum is one of 5 and I am one of 10 cousins. Anything important and everyone flies home. My grandparents house is always the HQ, my Grampies brothers actually build cottages on the acreage. We are stretched out over Canada and the US but everyone always makes it.

I grew up with my cousins so we are pretty tight family.

Today is my aunts birthday so today there are about a dozen actually headed to my Mum's

We use to on my Mom's side till my Grandma went insane and pretty much split up the family. She had 6 children. 3 boy and 3 girls which my Mom was obviously part of... lol. And each child had at least 1 child... but most had at least 2. So our reunions were pretty big. But as of recent... some of us use to get together for Thanksgiving at least... and in all honesty... the last major one we had was for Disney back in '03? Maybe Jess knows more... but Jess's side is pretty big, but only really get together on the holidays.

My immediate family doesn't unfortunately. My family is pretty far spread out all over the world and it's too hard to get together. Dave's family has them once a year and they are pretty fun..pretty much everyone he's related to in some way comes. His family is huge..to put it in perspective we invited 70 members of his family to our wedding--and that's just his close family not random cousins and stuff like that.

LOL

We had 200 people at our wedding and we added it up for the people that weren't related came to about 40

those pesky Italians, we had cousins that I am not sure how they fit or aunts that I couldn't figure out how they turned into my aunts.

I understand about Italian families. I have cousins in Toronto (my great grandfather's siblings moved there from Italy) and anytime someone mentions one of them I have to get out the grid to figure out who they are.

My great grandfather was one of 14 children and my great grandparents had 12 (my paternal grandma was the 3rd oldest).

What a great story - yours too, JustCar. We did have family reunions every year, before my grandmother died last year. She was the family matriarch, and sort of made sure that traditions carried on and that everyone knew how everyone fit together. Unfortunately, in the last few years, interest has dwindled. My generation isn't as close to one another as mom grandmother's and mom's were. I fear that the days for the family reunion pilgrimages home to WV (Charleston area) are numbered. It's sad, actually...for my part, I just don't have a lot in common with many in my family (beyond my immediate family - brother, first cousin, etc.) But I love hearing your stories. I hope I instill deep tradition within the hearts of my children. I'm working on it.
