LifL and DW's TR

We are back and had the trip of a lifetime. I don't think we could possibly have crammed in more fun than we did. It's a good thing I planned a day to recover at the end of our vacation, because boy did we need it.

For now, I'll give a brief synopsis with day by day details to follow.

Saturday - Arrival, resort, Downtown Disney

Sunday - DHS, full day

Monday - AK, Narcoossee's Sweetheart Dinner, Wishes (deluxe) Cruise

Tuesday - MK, very special surprise, MNSSHP

Wednesday - Universal Studios, Downtown Disney, special 70th Anniversary screening of The Wizard of Oz

Thursday - Islands of Adventure, Downtown Disney

Friday - Epcot

Saturday - trip home

Detailed report to follow biggrin

Friday - DW dropped our furry child off at the doggy resort in the am - complete with his toys, food for seven days (he's allergic to...oh...everything, we cook his meals twice a day), Nylabones to brush his toofers, and instructions for extra love. Left work early, at around two, to get started on our special trip. Loving wife is doing research this month, so her schedule is flexible; she was already home. Took our time getting ready to go, making sure everything was just right and we hadn't forgotten anything. Left the house around 330 and arrived in Baltimore about two hours later. Nearing the hotel, per our GPS, we had instructions to turn right at the upcoming intersection. DW pointed out that was a bit odd as we drove by a hotel by the same name as ours. Of course it wasn't until after we turned onto the prescribed street that we realized that was indeed our hotel we had passed. GPS was a bit confused, but we got there without much trouble. Stayed at a Comfort Suites near the airport and it was very nice. I did a good bit of research finding a hotel near BWI that met our needs. I was able to find a pretty good size suite with a weeks parking included for $89 - normally parking at a hotel near the airport is around $10/day. We saw a Chili's up the hill from the hotel as we walked in and decided to walk a few blocks up the hill to have dinner after settling in. Wasn't until we were right about to Frogger across the busy street (no crosswalk within sight) when we realized the restaurant with the big LIT UP sign wasn't even open for business yet. Thanks for that Chili's. So we walked back down the hill and around the corner to Quizno's. We enjoyed our sammies, nothing special, but they were good. Next morning we got up for the free hot breakfast. They had make your own waffle stations, and they were really good. The rest of the offereings were not so much, but it was worth the price:) After breakfast, we went and gathered our things in the room and checked out. We notified the front desk we needed to go to the airport and the free shuttle was there within five minutes or so. We really enjoyed our night at the hotel. Was nice to have a nice, relaxing, away from home start to our vacation.

More to come tomorrow. Was going to do the rest of Saturday as well, but it's getting late and I've got to travel tomorrow for work. I'll have you know, though, that I will be taking my work lappety toppety box with me so I'll continue then.

Good start so far! Sounds like a great way to begin a Disney vacation! I love getting up early and taking off on the airplane. Next stop: Orlando!

I used to not care for Quizno's, but now they're my favorite sandwich place. I'm not sure exactly what changed.

Saturday (continued) - Got to the airport several hours early. Usually, I don't like to be so early for anything, but that was just the way it worked out - as I hadn't planned on staying at a hotel (where we'd have to leave by a certain time). Turned out more than fine, really. We enjoyed the time there. We were able to relax, look around the stores, check out some magazines, buy a few things, then have lunch (Quizno's again; they're scarce where we live). Flight was comfortable, smooth, and non-stop. It was also very cheap. Was the first time either of us had flown AirTran, but it won't be the last.

Arriving at MCO, we went to collect our bags, then called for the rental company shuttle (turns out the rental car company's AIRPORT LOCATION isn't at the airport). Seemed like the shuttle took forever to arrive, but I don't think it was more than fifteen minutes or so. The rental company was close to the airport and the staff were reasonably friendly. Our car was a new Nissan Sentra. I had considered renting a bigger car, but for the two of us, it wasn't worth it to me. As it turns out, the Sentra was perfect. It is very roomy inside, believe it or not. Not only that, the trunk is HUGE. It's comfortable, rides nice, and gets good gas mileage. We both liked it quite a bit. From the rental company, we headed to Kissimmee Guest Services to pick up our free goodies - they offer lots of freebies for buying tickets from them, which are significantly cheaper than anywhere else I found. Their office was a bit hard to find, but we did manage to get there before the time they were scheduled to close. That is the time they were supposed to close. Unfortunately, they didn't feel people might like to know that they drastically changed their hours. They did make up for it though, we'll cover that later.

Next, and a bit miffed, we headed to our resort. Arriving at The Fountains was at once familiar and exciting and new. Walking into the new and very plush lobby, I was rather impressed. Check in was simple and straight forward, after which point the clerk directed us to the VIP services desk across the lobby. There we were given some more information including coupons and local attraction information. The representative there also informed us we could get a $75 Visa gift card if we wanted to have an owner update while we were there and tour one of the presidential suites available to us. I informed him we'd have to get back to him on that as we had a full schedule for the week.

After running around the 'villa' and taking some pictures, we headed out for Downtown Disney. Coming up to Downtown Disney, we saw that the sign for parking lot one indicated it was full. We headed down to the second entrance and parked behind the Disney store. One of the surprises I planned for DW was the big box o' pins I'd sent to the resort ahead of us. So when she indicated she wanted to check out the pin store on her own, I was thrilled. Entering she got all wide eyed and visibly excited. She was very interested, but wasn't sure what to make of all these pins. I mean, surely we couldn't afford to buy enough of these to trade for the whole trip. She kept bringing me lanyards she thought I'd like because she wanted to get started on the pin trading. I came up with excuse after excuse whey we shouldn't. I said we should wait to see what they have at the parks, knowing full well they are the same. I said I wasn't sure I wanted to get lanyards, while I was giddy like a six year old on Christmas morning on the inside. Ultimately I said we should buy one pin, our special pin we that would be our prize for whoever won the competitive ride (a fantastic idea I got from you fine folks). We opted for an LE Haunted Mansion pin - "Full Medical Coverage", perfect for us. I also made sure we picked up a couple lanyard pouches, those things are very handy. Then we decided we'd like to get something to eat and I said I'd like to check out Earl of Sandwich; another WDWFG recommendation. I ordered the Earl's Club 86 the mayo sub ranch dressing and DW ordered the Italian. I still can not believe how good those sandwiches are. There was some stiff competition, but the Earl may have provided the best food we had the whole trip. Everything about those sandwiches was out of this world. Well worth the short wait and only $6! After licking our fingers clean (no, we didn't, but we wanted to ) we headed out to do some shopping. We bought a special Christmas ornament (we decided we'd get one every year/trip), a very pretty wooden picture frame, a black WDW girlie shirt with sparklies for DW, some bath bombs for the jacuzzi tub, a cool WDW rolling duffel bag for a few dollars extra with our Disney purchases, and bar far the coolest PotC article I've ever seen. First we saw a very cool Pirates hoodie, then DW saw a black Pirates track jacket that I knew I couldn't live without. It's at once tough, but a good bit nerdy...just like me . After a long, wonderful night exploring DD, we headed back to the resort. When we pulled in, I told DW I had to check on something at the front desk. I went in and informed the manager there was a package waiting for me in the MOD's office (I had made arrangements and sent it directly to the hotel manager to make sure there was someone responsible for it, so it wouldn't get misplaced or abused). She verified my identity, then went and looked for my packaged. She returned a few minutes later with the treasure. I carried it to the car with it obscured, just to add to the suspense, and put it in the trunk. While DW was washing up, I opened the box and layed out all the pins on the dining room table (probably should have taken a picture of that). I told her I had something for her and led her into the dining room with her eyes closed. When she opened her eyes, she wasn't sure what to think and was a bit overwhelmed. She didn't know where to begin, as she knew nothing about Disney pins. I told her what I knew and all about how trading works. We went through and separated pins by the ones she liked, I liked, and those to be traded (and a pile of some non-trade-ables). Then I showed her the lanyards I'd gotten for us. I got two different unopened Year of a Million Dreams lanyards, with pins. Also got one starter set, because it was cheap, for traders. She chose the lanyard she liked best, with a bit of a [nudge, nudge, wink, wink] from me, then we added lots of traders and a few we wanted to display on each. Then it was off to bed.

DHS tomorrow!

One of our first destinations, naturally.

Oh my goodness, what a WONDERFUL trip report so far! LIFL, I can't believe she was so excited about the pin store at DTD! You must have been thrilled -- what a magical moment for you! I can not wait to hear the rest of the report -- thank you for all of the detail and thought that you're putting into it! I feel like I'm there with you.

Very cool on the Pirates track jacket, too. I hope it got cool enough there for you to wear it while you were in WDW.

I was thrilled to capture this moment! Not too shabby for being in motion. DW shot a video of my "Woo, we're at Disney World...WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" exclamation too. yay

Sunday - I made sure we got to DHS for rope drop because, although relatively small, it's one of my favorite parks. We got to Hollywood Blvd in time to catch most of the 'ceremony'. The director was standing on the back of a modified pickup like those you would see on a movie set (the ones the often have camera men in the back). He was in character and very convincing, he interacted with guests seamlessly while going through his routine. Really was exciting for us, especially since this was the first day of the trip in the parks, when he called for "...action!".

First thing we headed for was ToT; what better way to start the day, right? At a busier time of the year, I like to grab a fastpass for ToT, then go on RRC while it is still cool out. If it's busy and the line for RRC stretches outside, it can get pretty uncomfortable. When we got to ToT and grabbed our fastpasses, we realized there was hardly anyone there! So, we took that opportunity to squeeze in an extra ToT ride. We walked right on, and without people behind us I was able to share some of the special parts of the queue with my sweetie. I also gave her some of the "history" of the hotel. As we made our way through the line, I tried pulling the handles on the fuse boxes, but I never did find one that worked. DW is a bit afraid of heights, so was pretty scared, but I assured her that wouldn't factor in too much on this ride. She did not know what to expect because I had told her there was something special about the ride; that you didn't just fall (of course she could see that part before we got on). DW said the it was very scary, but she forgot all about that once the fun part started. She liked it enough that we went around and rode it again. After the two elevator rides, we walked over to RRC and rode with a minimal wait. Since we never really stopped in the queue, we didn't have much time to check out the scenery and props. I knew DW would enjoy this one, since she loves Space Mountain.

Next we were off to do some exploring and window shopping. We really enjoyed the cast members in character walking the streets and had several opportunities to interact with them. One 'Hollywood socialite' approached us and commended me for having my lady carry all our gear (DW had on our Camelbak). Said DW had enough gear for a seven day trek in the Adirondacks. Not sure if it comes across as such here, but it was quite funny at the time. We got our first real taste of pin trading about this time, and it didn't take long before we were hooked. We both found characters and themes we liked and didn't have any trouble finding more of them. We found out right away, this was a great way to initiate conversation with cast members (as has been mentioned here). As we were leaving one of the stores, I approached a CM to survey his lanyard and we struck up a conversation. The CM asked "You guys must come here a lot?", recognizing the two different Year of a Million Dreams lanyards full of pins. We replied I had been a few times, but this was DW's first time. He seemed excited at this notion, and started asking us questions about how long we'd been married and about our anniversary trip so far. Then he asked "Have you heard from our friends?"; I said "No?", a bit confused. He said "Did you get a call from our friends; did they leave you a message?". I still wasn't quite catching what he was throwing, so I said "Um, no we're not staying on property this time." He replied, "Oh, that's okay. Follow me". He took us over to the counter and picked up a phone that was under the register. He dialed a set of numbers, then handed the phone to DW, trying to conceal a smile. On the other end was a very cool Happy Anniversary "voicemail" from Mickey and Minnie. It was very special. Seems like a small touch, but it really made our day. He went out of his way, just for us.

Next we headed for the Studio Backlot Tour. I had done it a few times before, DW of course, had not. I enjoy the historical aspect of the tour and figured DW would as well. It really puts things into perspective for me to hear about how Walt did the things he did. Still amazes me, every time. We both had a good time, then headed for a shady spot to have a snack. We decided to have Clif Bars, chips, and on-board water (we had ice cold water with us at all times in the Camelbak). We found a ledge to sit on in the shade and really enjoyed our lunch of peanut butter crunch Clif bars and Sunchips. Honestly, it was rather satisfying. Feeling sated, we decided it would be a good time to catch a show, so we headed for Beauty and the Beast. We got there around lunch time, so it wasn't too crowded, but was still nearly full. DW thought it was neat that they had reserved seating up front for youngsters, birthdays, and other special guests. We really enjoyed the show, and really felt emotionally vested by the end.

Looks like she posed for us

With an itch for competitive fun, we headed to Pixar Place and Toy Story Midway Mania. We got a FP, then went to see MuppetVision 3D. I'd seen that show a number of times, but it was still fun for both of us. We meandered around some more, then headed back to TSMM. I loved the queue and was really encouraged by all the smiles of people who had just ridden. I thought the design and execution of the attraction was excellent. Quintessential Disney magic. I was very impressed that I, as a life-long gamer, didn't have a huge advantage against my DW. I was actually losing for a while, but I did come back to win - presumably due to the hidden and high-value targets I instinctively went for. I was real excited to put on our special pin after we exited the ride area.

I intended to do one day at a time, but assuming your as exhausted from reading all that as I am from recalling and writing it; I'll have to finish this up tomorrow. All that and it's still early in the day.

I'm loving this TR so far. So much wonderful detail. I feel like I'm getting to know both of you better.

That's so fun that Mickey and Minnie left you an anniversary message. I knew Goofy did one for birthdays, but I had no idea about the anniversaries! Thank you for sharing.

Sunday (cont.) - From TSMM we headed for Journey to Narnia. DW and I thought the attraction was neat, but it wasn't one of our favorites. Moreover, it didn't do much for us. Next we walked over to One Man's Dream. We enjoyed the walk-through exhibits and they reminded us a lot of a similar museum here dedicated to Milton S. Hershey. The subsequent film was enjoyable and educational, though I had some long blinks - I was already dragging. From here we headed for The American Idol Experience. Don't tell anyone, but we have been known to watch the show. I couldn't stand to watch anything but the auditions for a long time, but with the advent of the DVR, I can watch the whole show (fast forwarding any fluff and commercials). There seemed to be a lot of people in the waiting area, but when the doors open and we were all seated, we noticed it was pretty empty. When the show started a very animated man came out to get the crowd going; as you'll note really happens if you've ever been to a live taping of a TV show. He was very funny and did well to engage the audience. We were advised the show had something like a 'cool opening' wherein the audience is silent until the lights come up and the music is queued. When the lights came up and the theme began, we all cheered as instructed. It did feel a lot like I would expect being at the show does. We were advised there would only be two performers instead of the customary three. When the first came out, we were all waiting on baited breath to hear her sing. She was a young girl, about sixteen, and had the look of one of those on the show you just know is going to be really good...or really bad. She sang "Walking on Sunshine" and was very energetic. She could sing, but was far from the caliber who can do it for a living. She had fun, and that was enjoyable for us in the audience. After that, we didn't know what to expect from the second performer. She was older, I would guess in her mid-thirties, but very pretty. From the first note, I knew this woman was good, REALLY good. She sang "Reflection" from Mulan and sounded as good as the performer on the soundtrack. It was clear this woman sings for a living. That left us wondering if a professional just happened to sign up to audition for fun or if she was a plant. Stands to reason since I would expect they do whatever they can to have shows throughout the day and the park was quite slow. The show must go on, after all. The audience portion was the most authentic to me, including the set itself. The judges were fun, but they and their comments were quite contrived. They clearly had roles to play and stuck to them like glue. All in all, it was an enjoyable experience and we'd recommend it. It would have been more fun with a full audience and three performers.

We decided this would be a good time to find something for late lunch/early dinner, since it was about 3pm. We did not have ADR's this day, as I wanted to have options for some of our meals. We went to The Hollywood Brown Derby first and there was no way we were going to get a table there, all booked. Next we made our way to 50's Prime Time Cafe, no dice there either. I was surprised, and a little frustrated that even at a slow time of year, on a slow day, at a slow time for lunch/dinner, we still could not find a table service meal. Last try was at Hollywood & Vine. Hallelujah! They could take a walk-in. After all that, the CM asked if we would be using the DDP, then informed us it was $28 each if not; as though she knew that would likely discourage us. Now, I don't have a problem paying a premium price for a premium product (or when that's the standard, as in theme parks), but we both decided we didn't feel like spending that much for a buffet. We ended up going to Backlot Express where I knew the food was decent and there would be about no one. When we got there, we weren't sure it was open, because we were literally the only ones in there. It was open, and we walked up and ordered our food after a bit of deliberation. DW had the grilled turkey & cheese, while I had the very healthful double bacon cheeseburger. She enjoyed her sandwich, and my burger was just okay. It was greasy and the beef was poor quality. I got more than one bone chip and that reminded me that I had the last time I was there as well.

From lunch, we took a short walk to Star Tours. I've been on it more times than I can count, but I usually go on it at least once while there. DW had never been on it. We both had fun, even though some motion rides give DW a headache due to all the shaking and sudden movements. Next we decided to check out the Great Movie Ride. We enjoyed the Grauman's Chinese Theater and I showed DW some of the notable hand prints outside. I also told her some of the fun stories like how Charlton Heston was apparently interrupted while signing his hand prints. When he resumed signing his name, he left out the 'L', making it "Charton Heston". There were not very many people waiting for TGMR, but for some reason the queue seemed to take an inordinately long time. We watched the queue film several times, and it got tiresome. Once on the ride, I was hopeful we'd have a good experience. But alas, it was not meant to be. Our cast members just were not good actors. As hard as I tried to suspend disbelief, I just couldn't do it. DW and I were both underwhelmed. We won't be going on TGMR next time. I told DW earlier in the day I wanted to make sure we did the Magic of Disney Animation as I have really enjoyed that each visit. DW was not too excited as she reminded me she can't draw. I responded, "I couldn't draw a straight line if my life depended on it, but I still have fun". Once we were inside, the animator was excellent. He was the best I've seen. He did a great job interacting with the on-screen characters, making the interaction seem anything but canned. Once the class started, I was pumped up because we were going to be drawing Genie! Aladdin is one of my DW and I's favorite films, Disney or otherwise. How perfect is that!? DW is very hard on herself, as she expect perfection, so thought she did terribly. Naturally, hers looks a hundred times better than mine.

The sun was beginning to set by this point and we decided we should head for the first Fantasmic show. This would work out great since I told DW first thing in the morning we HAD TO do ToT at night. It's like a whole new ride to me. We got to Fantasmic around 7pm and it was already filling up. We were able to get great seats front and center, despite the rapidly filling amphitheater. Once everyone was settled in, I took in all the sights and people around me (as I usually do). There was a Scottish family in front of us, the two children of which were a boy in his late teens and a girl in her early to mid teens. The young man had fire red hair down past his waist, it was cool. Not something you see every day. To our right were a mother and father with a cute little boy of three or four and a baby. The toddler was trying his best to get the String Thing dad had bought for him to work and it was hilarious because he had the hardest time. He kept getting it stuck on things and tangled and knotted. Again, this show is something I've seen several times before, but I liked it as much if not more this time. I noticed a lot of little things I didn't pay much attention to before (or couldn't see from further away). There is a lot going on in the show, not unlike a great movie where you notice new things as you go back and watch it again.

The banal and lifeless stage belies the excitement that is to come.

Once we left Fantasmic, as I had hoped most people headed for the exit. This allowed us to walk right on ToT. Once we chose which elevator we'd ride, there was an obnoxious teenage couple in front of us. They weren't trying to be obnoxious, but they were. The young man was doing everything he could to be six different kinds of cool and nothing but manly. Mind you, we've all been there, but it was annoying. Lucky us, they ended up seated right next to us in our row. I deftly sidled over to let DW in front of me to sit next to the young man [tee-hee]. I didn't do it to be mean, it's just that DW is much more tolerant than I am and if provoked I may have been tempted to mess with the kid. As it turned out, no such retribution was necessary. We rode, it was great, we laughed - more giggled really - we got off where DW informed me Mr. Man's Man was doing his tough act all through the ride. As we went up and down the first couple times, he's playing it up, making faces and all. Then after that pause, when it seems like the ride is over, and it shoots back up...he clung to DW's arm like a six year-old girl! I laughed so hard, I swear I almost peed myself. We rode one more time for good measure, and headed for the exit with big smiles on our faces.

On the way out.

Tomorrow is AK and the first of the big surprises.

Thank you for the feedback thus far. I was elated DW was excited about the pin store Bali. I couldn't have planned that part better myself. It was fun, but nerve-wracking having to stick to the schedule I had and adhere to the plans without her knowing there was a schedule or any plans (such as ADR's). Sadly, it was WAY too hot to wear the Pirates track jacket. I did wear my Goofy basketball jersey to MK though and DW wore the shirt we bought for her.

It's great to read your TR LIFL!! You're reminding me of all kinds of things I have to do while I'm here! I completely forgot about the Animation.

The pin story was great. Which characters/themes did you guys choose to collect?

There are a number of themes we've grown fond of, but right away I started collecting pirate themed Disney characters. Not really into the PoC movie ones or the generic PoC ones from starter sets. I've found it really exciting, though, just how many different sets have Disney characters in pirate regalia clapping DW started collecting villains and Tink among others. I know Tink is a very popular character to collect, but we've gotten all sorts of neat ones I've never seen before.

Simulators make a lot of people nauseous. I seem to do okay with them most of the time though. Tower of Terror really is a different ride at night too!

Sorry I wasn't able to do AK today. I'll do my best to get that up tomorrow. Just have to set aside a good bit of time to do it.

Just make sure the quality doesn't suffer! laugh

Yeah! We won't stand for something of a lesser standard than we're used to (like my still-not-done trip report from September 2008... sarcastic silly )

LOL, I'll get it done soon. It's just hard because I have to sit down for a relatively long time, preferably uninterrupted. It's not like making a quick post or two, or I'd have the whole week done already mickey

I know the feeling! I'm having a hard time keeping notes, so I figured popping in with a few photos each day might work. Then again, that's not to say that I, too, prefer the long, detailed trip reports!

Monday - AK - Happy Anniversary Day

Arriving before nine, there was what I would consider an average line at the turnstiles. It took us five to ten minutes to get in. Once we were inside AK, we grabbed a map, quickly plotted, and headed straight for EE to get a FP. My last trip to AK, lines were consistently long for EE, so I wanted to make sure we got to ride it at least twice. Boy was I in for a surprise! Once we made our way, weaving through light pedestrian traffic, to 'Tibet' we noticed there was not a single person at the FP station. I was smiling inside, but I didn't want to get DW's hopes up, so I kept it to myself for the time being. I suggested we head over to the entrance to look at the wait sign. As we walked up, we saw a '5 min' and a big smile on the CM's face who said: "Oh, it isn't even that long". Without delay, I dragged DW by the hand through the queue like a three year-old dragging mommy to the mall Santa Claus they passed. We boarded quickly and were on our way to a screaming good time. I had told DW this ride had something special about it, but didn't want to ruin the surprise for her. As the ride began, I was being goofy, kind of playing up the suspense. I'd make like it was about to be scary when it wasn't yet. That lasted about thirty seconds before DW put a stop to that nonsense. We both had a great time. I loved it as much as the first umpteen times I rode. Since the total time from entering the queue to exiting was less than ten minutes, of course we had to ride again. Then, we decided it was time for something a little different...and we rode again! We rode three times in less than a half hour and still had our FP.

Leaving 'Tibet' we decided to do some sight seeing at our own pace. We really enjoyed some of the little touches in that area like the bike tracks/footprints/etc. in the ground and some of the authentic pieces. By the time we were done with all the looking around Asia, it was already getting hot. We decided now would be a good time to go on Kali River Rapids. Believe it or not, I'd never been on KRR on previous trips to AK, so I was looking forward to it. Though I've been on dozens of similar rides, we both really enjoyed KRR. It was a neat social experience, where we 'bonded' with the other people in our raft. One family in particular was memorable. They had a little girl about six and a little boy around four who drug mom and dad on KRR for the third time in a row. We were all cracking up, talking about who was going to 'get it' next, then laughing when they didn't and the one doing the talking did. Toward the end of the ride, I hid a smile as their youngest implored: "...but you said we could ride it agaaaaaain!?", then being joined by big sister. As we exited, we realized just how soaked we were. I made sure to wear a wicking shirt to AK, as I've found it's one of the hotter parks, but DW wasn't so lucky. She was layered in all cotton (light layers, but very absorbent). After walking around a bit, trying to dry off we headed back to EE to use our FP's. Our wait with the FP's was a couple minutes longer than our earlier visits, but still very brief. We switched off which side we rode on several times and really enjoyed the subtly different experience on each.

As we walked giddy away from EE, I told DW we should go on our Safari while it was still early in the day. The first and only time I rode before it was mid-day in the summer and most all the animals were taking cover, so it was fun but not great. As we walked up to Kilimanjaro Safaris, I noticed to sign said '20 min' (to the best of my recollection). This was actually our longest wait of the day, at around 30 minutes. Besides the heat, we really enjoyed this queue. I don't remember paying much attention my first time through this queue. As we were about to board, we noticed the driver of the vehicle we thought we were going to board was very animated and seemed like he'd be real fun. We were a bit bummed when that safari vehicle pulled off without us. As we boarded ours moments later, we critically assessed our new safari guide. As it turns out, she was fun too, though not as lively. I don't know if it was due to the time of day, time of year, proximity to feeding time, or all of the above, but we saw pretty much every animal of note. We saw lions, cheetahs, gazelles (both varieties), black rhinos, white rhinos, hippos, okapis, bongos, antelope, giraffe, wildebeest, warthog - you name it, we probably saw it. I know some of the animals I mentioned are almost omnipresent, but we saw some that I hadn't seen before and are not so common from what I gather. DW had a great time, but for some reason I think I enjoyed it even more. It was very special for me. I guess you could say it was one of those "magical" experiences. For me it was the epitome of suspension of disbelief. I was in my own little world; even if for only moments at a time, I was there.

Now that we were both good and sweaty, we decided it was time for some air conditioning, so headed to Dinoland USA and Finding Nemo - The Musical. I had read here and elsewhere that this was one of the best Disney shows going (and some listed it as their favorite ever), so we had high expectations. We entered a good twenty or thirty minutes before the show, but the theater was already very full. DW likes for me to take the lead when there are big crowds (she's a decision maker at work, so it's nice for her to have me take care of such things), so I used my extra-sensory nerd perception to find two seats open all the way down front. There were lots of youngsters in the audience including in our row. Shortly after the show started, one of the fresh ones in our row began to get fussy. After mom and dad each had a hand trying to calm baby down, mom took the little fella out of the audience - a very courteous thing to do. As for the show itself, we were blown away. I loved the way they seamlessly blend the puppet characters with their performing counterparts. At times I'd focus solely on the characters, enjoying the fantastic notion that they we are watching them in their pseudo-natural environment. Other times, I couldn't help but watch the performers in wonderment. The only issue either of us had was the performer who was Nemo's dad kept brushing his microphone with his puppet. It was noticeable, but really didn't detract from the show. We've both seen our share of musicals and other stage performances, but this was up there with the best of them. We both felt it was a Broadway quality show. Moreover, we were humming the songs the rest of the week - strike that...I still am!

AK part deux, with extra specialness coming soon.

What a fantastic morning at AK!! It's really fun to see the park through your DW's eyes -- as a brand new experience. I can't believe you were able to ride EE three times in a row, then get on Kali and the Safari with minimal waits!

We really like to ride Kali over and over again like the family you were with. We figure, if we're gonna get soaked, we might as well get REALLY soaked. I think it's fun, too, how you get to know the people in your boat. I'm a introvert, but I do think that's a special experience.

I'm so glad to hear how much you enjoyed Nemo! It's an amazing show. I hope they do it on Broadway.

Sounds like an amazing first visit to AK for your DW. Thank you so much for taking the time to share this with us. Did you do any pin trading in AK?
