Living in WDW

I asked in the other thread, but as a semi-serious question, has anyone done the math on how many points you would need to live in WDW year-round?

In a studio, figure 14 per night Sun-Thurs and 28 Fri-Sat. That's 126 per week and 6552 per year! At the Timeshare Store once I actually saw a person who had 1000 points to sell...SHOCKING!

Assuming a cost of approx 100$ a point we're looking at around $600-700k. That's a lot, but it's basically the cost of a really nice condo. Too bad you'd be in a studio. Probably makes more sense to pony up a little more and get the 1 bedroom. Like maybe those fancy Bay Lake Villas! It would be great to be able to say you lived in WDW! Of course in 50 years when your points expire you might regret it!

Yeah I think if I was going to live in WDW I'd add the extra points to get a 1 bedroom.

I think I'd go into Disney Sugar Shock!! laugh

Seriously, though, I wonder if it'd be like living in any other vacation destination--you don't "take advantage of it." Like living in New York for 10 years and never going to the top of the Empire State Building. confused

Great analogy. Sadly there's almost nothing else to do in Orlando than go see "attractions". On the plus side you'd generally get great service.

I say we conduct an experiment, let's donate enough points to...oh...say...me, to live there and I'll let you guys know if it's worth it or not! laugh

Can we come visit?

Actually that got me thinking. I wonder if you could do a group of people who DID this and basically just sort of rotated in and out and crashed there. I guess you'd either get no cost advantage or exceed the occupancy limits and get in trouble. I'm just trying to figure out how to have a "beach house" in WDW.

I may be hallucinating, but I seem to remember once there was a maximum number of points an individual could own. Anybody remember this?

Also, don't forget ya gotta "pay your dues" on all those points.

How about six months at DVC, then get on a nice cruise ship for the other six? I'd love to say DCL, but you'd need a million points for THAT kind of lifestyle! laugh

Haha! That's a really good point! Are you sure you want to get donated 10,000 DVC points when you have to pay $50,000 per year in dues. That would be a very bittersweet gift!

As I was reading this thread, that was my thought! What about all those "maintenance" dues that GO UP EVERY YEAR!! eek

Um...isn't that what they call a "time share?" laugh

Yes, I think there is a limit. Since this is a timeshare and you do get to vote or have a say each year when they have the timeshare meeting, someone with that many points will carry a lot of weight.

I don't quite remember how big the limit is, though.

Zz.

The figure that comes to mind is 2,000 points. I think that may be the maximum that an individual can own.

That's really surprising. I figured you could have as many as you wanted. 2k isn't nearly enough to live there all year. Sad

Is that per person or per family? Can I and my wife each own 2k? Then we're getting close. Give the kids 2k too and we're there!

I am not, though I love the resort and think the villas section there is one of the most striking. You're at OKW, right? Do you have points anywhere else?

We only have OKW. If the conditions are right down the road, I'd like to have some at the Bay Lake Tower.

One of the things I love about the villas section is the little section to the right now called the Carolwood Pacific room. It is a tribute to Walt's Railroad at his home and they have a lot of pictures, memorabilia and even a couple of the cars in there that were part of his system. I have a trip planned this summer which features Michael Broggie (whose father was Roger Broggie, a Disney Legend who built Walt's railroad), and the story of the home railroad is fascinating. I'm going to go into detail about it in another post, but if anyone is interested, check out www.legendscruise.net. In addition to Michael, we've got X Atencio, Margaret Kerry, Bob Gurr & Terri Hardin. Going to be some nice 'behind the scenes' activities too.

How much would that cost?!? If you've got that kind of disposable income, why bother with DVC!? laugh

Man those Bay Lake towers look killer. A nice high-rise condo, right by the Magic Kingdom. What a neighborhood!

Have you toured the Model, Edward? There were some good pics posted a while back.

Disney Sugar Shock is definitely possible. When I have that kind of cash, I think I'll take the 2000 points to live in WDW for a chunk of the year, then "settle" for Paris the rest of the time. wink banana

I'm with YOU on that. I haven't toured the model, but sure will on our next trip. I don't know how much you guys followed this, but the Bay Lake Tower was a very poorly kept secret, as they didn't want to hurt sales on other properties. Probably two years ago there was a posting on an architectural website one morning of the "proposed" DVC at the Contemporary. I managed to dl it before it was removed before lunch. If I can find it I'll post it.

Even months after that, while talking to DVC reps at the Wilderness Lodge, they suspected about the Bay Lake property, but it hadn't been officially announced. They had me email them the picture so they could see it.

I thought it was funny that the cast members had to pretend they didn't know what it was. There's a large building being erected next to the Contemporary Resort, but no-one knows what it is! silly

I'd love to see that Pic!

I'll send it as soon as I can figure out how. I've tried to send it as an attachment, and to paste it directly into the post, but neither one seem to be working.

I think the Attachments generally work. But usually I think people just put them up on Image Shack or some such and link to them there.

Got it! Here is the photo. It went on an architectural website one morning, caused a BIG ripple among DVC fans and was gone within two hours or so. I'd managed to download it before it was removed.

I really do think Bay Lake will be an amazing property. AKV, the tree house villas, and Bay Lake are all going to be BIG boons for DVC I think.

Thanks for the pic, MouseTraveler. Very interesting.

I'd love to see more concept art. I should go do a hunt on the web...

Thanks for posting that pic. I would say that it was a mistake on their part not to "hype" it more, but I think it got plenty of buzz as it is. I think there's probably not a property more likely to make me consider DVC ownership.

There are SO many things that make that location attractive.
Location - on the monorail (although a bit of a hike into the Concourse)
Location - walking distance to the MK
Location - right on the lake, and those wonderful little speed boats!

Is anything being done with Discovery Island these days?

We swung by DI on some speedboats on our last trip and it looked pretty desolate. Anyone else?

Seems like such a waste. They'll probably build DVC on there eventually!

Now I kind of like that idea mickey I could see a "Swiss Family Robinson" themed DVC resort on Discovery Island.
