NATO is almost over

The NATO summit is ending as we speak. The president is giving his closing remarks. I can say I'm glad that this is just about over and the city of Chicago got by relatively unharmed. I'm all about the freedom of speech, the right to assemble, and everything else that goes with it. However, for those of us living here there was definitely worry about what may and could happen.

My question to ya'll is this. How were the protests televised in other areas? Were they televised at all?

I have a friend who is an officer and was down on the front lines. He said this: 99% of the protestors were peaceful, in a great mood, and responded well to the police direction. They understood that they were trying to keep everyone safe. But all we saw on TV were the handful on the other end of spectrum, the extremists. Those people were ruining the "fun" for everyone.

All i can say in reply is--- Isn't that always the way it is.---- BUT even if the protesters are "peaceful" I must say that it is never "fun" for those Police Officers there in the front lines.

I live in Rockford, so honestly, not that far away but we have different local news channels than you do. We got almost no coverage of the protests. I think I saw one clip about someone's wedding pictures being ruined by protesters, that's it.

I am a police officer and we understand the right to assembly etc... There are always some who will go to the extreme to make their point. We aren't in this job to hurt people but once the game is on people are really setting themselves up to be in harms way. Be it 99%'ers, out of control flashmobs, sporting events and concerts or college parties/celebrations.
I rarely watch the news. I know that may be shocking but it's odd how things get changed or distorted. I'm not saying the media is all bad. I'm just saying its often all about ratings and shock value.
I did see a snippet of people getting hit by officers, but did not turn up the sound to see what was being discussed. Our dispatchers have a TV in dispatch they usually watch the news. That's usually when I see it.

I cannot comment on the protests as I have not seen nor heard anything about them here in the UK until I read this thread.

However, I will comment on the policing if I may. Apologies if I have gone off topic a little.

We had troubles last year in both London and Birmingham (where i live) where there were rioters and looters. Basically, for two days the UK was in a mess. Buildings were being set on fire and things were distroyed.

The police were criticised for not acting with enough force.

Before that we had the student demonstrations which went over the top.

I have no idea what the protests above were about (perhaps someone could give me an in-sight?) however I am all for freedom of speech but when minority groups come out and use this as an excuse to cause trouble then it needs to be stopped there and then.

LoL... So funny about the media. I got nothing on the protests just 2 hours away from me, but I remember those fires being set last year in England!

actually the response I got from you is what I was hoping to hear. In a weird way. Not that the media was trying to hide anything. but the cpd did a great job, most of the marches, rallies, protests stayed under control and calm. I just remember hearing at one point while I was watching the big march that was timed with the beginning of the summit, a newscaster said, this is how chicago is being potrayed all over the world right now. It was a huge march with some people getting violent or throwing things at the CPD (a metal guard rail being one). But the police acted quickly and it took about an hour or so but it was brought under control with minimal arrests and without the use of the LRAD or tear gas. I believe there was some physical restraint used, but if you are attacking an officer or resisting arrest that's expected.

I was just wondering how the media in other states/countries were portraying the protests here. meaning, which way was the spin going. for the police or for the protestors. but hearing there wasn't much news coverage is a good thing.

cadac - the protests were mostly anti-war protests. the NATO (north atlantic treaty organization) summit was held in chicago this year and it had presidents and dignitaries from all over the world meeting for 2 days to discuss mostly afghanistan and pulling troops out. I know other things were discussed, but unfortunately my invite got lost in the mail. laugh and that's what most of the news covered here. In the past the cities that have held the NATO summits have undergone a lot of riots and protests and with how "hot" the occupy movement is right now there was a huge threat that we would feel some of those riots here. Fortunately, the mood stayed positive for the most part. With only about 45 arrests (last i heard, don't know what the count is actually at now) out of the thousands and thousands that showed up for the rallies.

Dee - I respect your line of work! I don't know if I could do it!

Honeymoonin,
Thanks for the compliment. My job isn't for everyone to do...we're a special breed of people. Some say crazy, some say life savers. I'll leave that up to the Hose Heroes.
I just work and go home safely to my loved ones.
