Now I've Gone and Done it

After much thought, and reading/participating in threads about them; I've bought a bunch of pins to trade on our upcoming trip. Bought 150 so far, but may end up with around 200. I figure, even with our favorites and LE's removed, that should be plenty to trade for the week.

I'll be sure to tell you guys all about them once they arrive.

How much fun! Did you go mostly for a theme, or a bunch of different ones? Does your wife know about them, or will this be part of the surprise? mickey

150 out of the box. You didn't do it half-way, did you? Did you get a grab bag, or do you know all of the pins you got?

Bought several different lots from ebay. Two different sellers, both pin traders, with excellent feedback and a lengthy record of happy customers. All are official, tradeable, Disney pins but I don't have specifics. Just know there "will be some" LE, cast lanyard, rack, HM, etc.

You're right cdub; I wanted to get a bit of a head start:) Figured, I'd get that many one way or another, so I may as well do it now and save myself a ton of time and money.

DW does not know. I've decided I'm going to mail these, along with our costumes, to the resort yay

Looks like you've done your research as far as guarding yourself from fakes on Ebay. Don't be fooled, there ARE plenty of fakes out there, and many of these fakes get bought and sold on EBay every day.

Even someone like me, who I would consider only moderately knowledgeable about Disney Pin Trading, can spot some of these fakes at first glance.

That said though, you did the right thing. I always buy at least one mixed lot of 'traders' before each trip. Usually I'll find a couple in the lot that I'll want to keep, because they'll be in line with what I collect.

If you wait till you get there to get yourself some traders, you'll find you'll be paying full price for pins that you're going to trade away for pins you like better. Doesn't sound like too bad of an exchange, really, but it's much smarter to do what you did; buy pins at a steep discount which will be eventually traded for pins you want.

Yeah, I've bought everything from liquidation merchandise for $.01 (some of which were worth hundreds) to a car on ebay. In this case, I made sure several thousand people had bought pins from these sellers and were happy with their official pins before I would buy any from them.

We will still buy some pins while there, but pins to commemorate the occasion and our favorite places.

Sounds like you should also be writing a book on how to get your money's worth on Ebay awesome

I think you and DW will have a great time on this trip. Sorting through all of those pins will give you a great idea of what's out there, what makes a pin valuable and interesting to YOU, and what types of pins you may want to collect. Great idea.

That's the way I look at it too. I know I'm going to have to pay full price for many pins on each trip, so I buy the 'traders' at steep discounts.

I do have a lot of experience getting great deals on ebay. It's not the bargain hunters paradise, like it used to be. It's more of a seller's market now, but you can still find some great deals. One of my favorite ebay scores is a paper shredder. Funny as that sounds, it is about the size of a night stand, and can shred large amounts of paper. Shredders are rated not only by the number of sheets at a time, but by amount of use in a day they can sustain without risk of failure. This thing is like the Rolls Royce of shredders; you can use it all day, every day. I think I paid about $4 for it, and that's only because there was something like a $3 fee to pick it up locally. Oh, and it shreds just about anything. Credit cards, CD/DVD-ROMs, etc....I LOVE that thing.

How many pins do you guys usually take to the park each day? How many are you able to trade on a normal day? What do you do with your lanyard if/when you go on a thrill ride?

Unless it's more than a weeklong trip, I take one full lanyard to the parks each day. As the trip wears on, the lanyard becomes less full of 'traders' and more full with 'keepers'. You can get a lot of pins on one lanyard.

You can trade as many as you'd like on any given day. Two per CM at a time of course. You'll find that the later in the day you go, the less of a selection you'll find from CMs, unless you happen to be lucky. That's been my experience anyway.

Here's a tip- bring with you a high quality ziploc bag. Whenever you aren't wearing the lanyard, put it in the bag and seal it. I wear cargo type shorts a lot, and I'll stick the baggie in one of those big pockets when I'm on an attraction in which I don't want to wear the lanyard. The baggie is a good idea, because pin backs and sometimes pins WILL come off the lanyard at times.

Cargo shorts are a GREAT idea. I hate taking a backpack into the park, and lots of pockets solves that problem.

Also, LIFL, you might want to invest in a few extras of those rubber pin backs. They come in handy if you accidentally lose a pin back during transit.

I rarely wear anything other than cargo shorts anymore. They're so convenient. Occasionally if I'm going to ride Kali and I know I'm going to get soaked I'll wear something that dries out more easily. Otherwise -- Cargo Shorts!

Heh, hopefully we'll have enough we aren't intent on hanging on to. Otherwise, we may have to do the same.

Do you have any ideas about which ones you'll collect? Do you both have favorite characters or parks that you can collect series from?

You may have to just keep buying more until you get duplicates to trade! laugh

It could happen!

And I do have some themes in mind, but I'll wait and see what I get before deciding.

Do you think DW will have any pin preferences?

I think she's going to be somewhat overwhelmed; least that's what I'm going for. I haven't talked to her too much about what her preferences might be because it's a surprise. We don't have a lot of time to watch Disney movies and things, so it's hard to say what characters or themes she will like. I treat her like a princess, so that's one guess. Maybe Tigger and other Pooh characters.
For me, I want Muppets, extinct attractions, and ghosts, ghoulies, and villains. I'm sure there will be others that strike my fancy.

Extinct attractions is a great suggestion. I have my giant box of pins sitting next to me and I MUST go through them. Still waiting to hear from Miss MillieHubbard what's on her "to get" list! Hopefully I can help out.
