Is Pop worth the extra?

Hello!

My boyfriend and I are going to Disney World in September 2011 for 2 weeks on a budget. I was going to book us into the All Star Music Resort as it is the cheapest resort, and I went about 10 years ago and remember liking it. However I have heard that Pop is much nicer, but do people really think it is worth the extra money?? Having never seen it, I'm struggling to decide!
Also, do people tend to prefer Pop for reasons that someone travelling without children wouldn't appreciate?

I just want other people to make the decision for me since I can't Smile

p.s. any other accommodation tips would be most welcome!

Pegosaurus, First of all welcome to WDW for grownups, You will find answers to all your questions here at the friendliest Disney forum on the net. I have been to both ASM (3X) and POP (2X) and I did prefer POP but not for any overwhelming reasons, the basics are the same as far as room size and amenities in the rooms and the food courts are about the same, with PC getting a very slight edge in that category. Also bus transport edge goes to POP. POP also is a newer resort and gets a slight edge in that department although there is nothing wrong with ASM in that respect. I THINK the reason that ASM is SLIGHTLY cheaper price wise is that they are in different counties and the rooms tax is slightly less in the county that POP is situated. Either choice will be great. And I am sure that some of our other very knowledgeable members will chime in.

Heya and welcome aboard!

Sorry the site is so slow today, I believe it is due to an external party but we're still trying to work it out.

In my opinion Pop is worth a little more, but not a lot more. Does anyone remember if all the ASM rooms are upgraded? If not I might pay a little more because ALMOST all the POP rooms are upgraded.

For me though, I probably wouldn't go through the trouble of changing the resort just over any small advantages POP has. Others may disagree though. Some people LOVE POP. If you haven't checked it out, there's a fan site:

http://www.popcenturysite.com/

To give you some more ideas if you'd like it.

The room rates are the same for all the value resorts. The only difference is in the room tax and that is only a couple of bucks.
We choose Pop Century if the rooms are available, If not we choose All Star Music.
we are going in 23 days and it will be our 57th trip to WDW.
Have fun.
Joe

Welcome!!! We have stayed in ASMovies and Pop and we prefer Pop. The rooms are being newly renovated right now, as Brad said. Brand new flat-screen TVs, carpets, beds, bedspreads, etc. It's really nice!

Also agreed that the bus service is a bit better since Pop has dedicated buses.

Very excited to have her here on WDWFG!

Thank you all for your replies! I think I'll check out that fan site Smile Pop does sound very nice! Not that I didn't think the All Stars were nice too.

It's strange that you managed to get Pop for a similar price to the All Stars, because when I put the dates in online it comes up as being about £150 (so, I guess about $250ish?!) more expensive for 2 weeks at Pop than at All Star Music. Maybe if I call them instead of doing it online it will be somehow cheaper? Here's hoping!! Laughing out loud

Are you getting any kind of discount on one, but not the other? Maybe an AP discount or something?

It seems really odd that the pricing should be so different. If my math is correct we're looking at nearly $30/night?

no not that much; I think in dollars more like 15 per night, but I only know the exact price difference in pounds (basically £10 per night). Which is quite a lot since we're going for 14 nights! However, after looking at that link Brad posted, I'm thinking it is looking pretty darn good, and maybe I should just shell out the extra and go for it!

I don't know if it's just because we get Fl. resident rates but we have stayed at Pop Century about 8 times since they opened and at least that many times over all in All Star Music and the prices are always the same at each value resort except for the tax.

Make sure when you are making your reservation that you are clicking the same room type. If you are choosing a preferred room in POP make sure you are choosing a preferred room in ASMu..sometimes the Disney site upgrades to preferred automatically on some but not the others. When I was pricing out my trip I noticed that there was a big difference.

But in my opinion..if you're on a budget then no..POP is not $250 dollars better than ADMu.

That's odd because everytime I've looked Pop has been slightly cheaper when comparing like with like, which I'd always asumed was down to different levels of purchase tax in the two counties.

that's so strange - I am definitely selecting standard room for both. It could be something to do with my being in the UK? Well, when I reserve I'll call up and ask. Hopefully they are open to haggling laugh

I would say definitely give them a call to see what the deal is. What are the dates you're going? I can plug them in over here and see what I get.

I found a website where the prices were slightly lower, but the difference in price is essentially the same:

It's not my first trip, no, I'm just really excited anyway! I went about....13 years ago...when I was 11...and then in 2007 I did the International College Programme, which meant I was a castmember in the Magic Kingdom for the summer! So my knowledge is a little out of date, plus I don't know too much about the resorts or many od the restaurants (because as I castmember we couldn't afford to eat on property much), I only know a lot about the attractions and shops! Hence all the questions I've been asking silly

They should give the CMs a free nice meal every once in a while. Doesn't seem fair that you worked there and couldn't partake!

Ah we didn't totally go without - I did go to Rainforest Cafe and Planet Hollywood a couple of times! I was so strapped for cash out there though that food was very low down on the list of things my money was spent on. Being a castmember had it's fair share of other, non-food related perks anyway biggrin

Just checked on the Disney World site and got:

ASMovies: 1,390
Pop: 1,384

The prices per night were exactly the same ($85 and $95 per night depending on whether it's a weekend or not), so the difference must be in a few cents of tax.

Up until the day before we booked it was coming up as All Stars (not movies, just sports and music) being significantly cheaper everywhere we looked, but then when we booked all the prices went up for ALL the resorts, including the moderate ones, so we just went for pop because by that point it was the same price as all stars. Shame it went up in price, but it made the decision easier! I'm happy with it anyway clapping

You'll love POP..if they all turned out to be the same price then (in my opinion) POP is the best choice. It's my favorite value.

That does seem to be the general consensus, so I reckon I made the right choice
