What the heck is The Hat Box Ghost?

So I've been reading a lot of blogs about the upcoming Guillermo del Toro Haunted Mansion movie..and he is stating that the movie will largely revolve around "The Hat Box Ghost".
Now..I have ridden the WDW Haunted Mansion about 100 times. I even got stuck on it once right under the "Hurry baccckkk and don't forget your DEATH certificate" ghost for over an hour..(yes..the exit was literally two feet away..no..they wouldn't let us off because there was no platform" but I have never seen the Hat Box Ghost..I assumed this was a Disneyland thing..but I have been looking around and it seems like The Hat Box Ghost was something that was in the original DL ride for a few weeks and then was taken away? This doesn't make much sense to me.

LM*O!!

You could've ridden HM a billion times and not have seen him, because he's not there! He isn't even at DL anymore, as you learned, he was only there for a short time.

The Hatbox Ghost has developed somewhat of a cult like status among hardcore DL and HM fans. The official word is that the effect didn't work, and that's why he was removed, but I've heard that he may have been too scary for the Imagineer's liking after seeing the finished product. He is called The Hatbox Ghost because the Audio Animatronic figure was a ghost holding a hat box which contained a head that could be seen in certain lighting.

He was kind of the face of the HM when it was announced to open at DL, and for that reason, he is pictured on a lot of literature and promo items promoting the HM. Del Toro being the HM and DL enthusiast that he is, it makes sense that he wants to figure the Hatbox Ghost in the film, though I am still afraid (pun intended) that he will make the film too scary.

Now that I"m thinking about it, I wonder about something. if Disney were to remove all the Audio Animatronics that don't work properly, wouldn't the Yeti have been kicked out of Expedition Everest three years ago? laugh

This is a VERY good point.

Thanks for bringing up the Hatbox Ghost, bella! I knew he was a "cult figure" among Disney fans, but I didn't know the whole story!! This is a brilliant post!

Ah, the Hatbox Ghost! How interesting that he's going to build the film around this guy. I'm sure many people will be pleased to hear that.

This tells you all you need to know. Great site by the way.

Think this was posted elsewhere here, also.

I wonder if the movie does well if they'll put the hatbox ghost back in.

When I started this thread it seemed odd to me that they were going to base a movie around something that wasn't there anymore..but then I thought about the fact that Jack Sparrow had nothing to do with the original POC..so now it makes more sense!
It's an interesting concept though. I am really excited for this movie.

The real question is (and I would love to be the Imagineer working on this!!) are they actually going to be able to make the effect work like its supposed to!

I wonder if they put him somewhere else besides the attic, so the vehicles wouldn't be as close to the actual effect...

I would hope in 55 years and all the technology that we have now that they could figure SOMETHING out!!

I bet if the movie does well they will put him in. I back this up with the great POC refurb of 2006.

as a huge HM fan.. I was happy to learn about the new movie which is supposed to feature the "hat box ghost" as a main character. Unfortunately, I have not heard much about it since the announcement at COMICON. I am also a Disney pin collector , and found out that yesterday, Disney released 6 new pins, featuring the hitchhiking ghosts riding popular Disneyland rides. BUT.... in addition to the classic trio, there is an additional haunted figure. the "hat box ghost" is prominently featured on 3 of the 6 pins, including the one of him riding king Arthurs' carousel BY HIMSELF. It seams to me that this lends credibility that he will be a featured part of the movie, and disney appears to be gearing up for it...

here is hopping that he makes it back into the mansion, where he belongs.

Hey there GGG! Welcome to WDWFG! I like your theory that they wouldn't make a bunch of merch of the HBG if he wasn't going to feature prominently somewhere in their media empire. While Disney isn't great at catching wind of what's going on in the Internet all the time, I'd think they'd catch the buzz around here if they haven't. I think featuring him is a great way to bring in the serious HM fans.

See - I'm learning from y'all again. There's going to be a new HM movie? Didn't we do that once already? Badly? Is this a do over, I guess? I suppose I bet run out and try to answer my own questions. Smile

That's a trend in movie making that I actually like. Rather than just decide they ruined a franchise they just start over and try again. Haven't they tried to make a Hulk movie like 3 times now? Also the recent "reboots" of Batman and Star Trek were both very good I thought.

I cant remember how many there are. I take pictures of all of our pins and catalog them so we can keep track of them, but all of that is on my laptop, and I havent merged it onto my new desktop. So I havent had a chance to update because I do buy some on eBay. I know I have one of them: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/view?uname=106452536040058115026&isOwner=true&psc=S&tags=Will#5566328611780871186

Got them a couple months back. I remember seeing them at Disney on a couple of the people there, but never traded for them. I got them on eBay for my son and my wife.

I agree... The Hat Box Ghost is one ghost that needs to say hello more often!
