I just walked 3 miles in about an 1 hour and 20 minutes. It was through a local park with a lot of gardens. My time would have been better if I hadn't stopped to take pictures in all the gardens.

I need to start walking myself. My niece ran the Pittsburgh half marathon today. I am so proud of her. She set a goal of 2:30 and did it in 2:31 not bad, not bad at all.

I took a little dip in the run miles last week prepping for a big build this one. I will then taper again next week to prep for a half marathon followed by a 5k the next day on the 18th and 19th. Hoping for a <2:00 half marathon should all things align with my training on the 18th. I'd love to PR in the 5k too but I plan on destroying myself in the half so there will be no PR in the 5k.

Does anyone have any tips on how to prevent or get rid of side pain/stitches when running? I get them somewhat often but tonight was bad. I almost had to come to a complete stop rather than just a walk sad

Wow a <2:00 hour finish!? That's crazy! I'm running my first half at W&D in November and I just hope I don;'t get swept laugh

How are you breathing? Sometimes if you count your breaths in and out, that can help. There was an article in Runner's World (Maybe Feb edition? I can look when I charge my Nook!) about chi running and how the number of counts you inhale/exhale can decrease injuries. It suggested breathing for counts of 3 to alternate the food you inhale/exhale on. I can't concentrate that much, but I do find I do about 4 in and 4 out naturally.

It tried counting and made it about half way through my run before it got to hard. It's hard counting breaths and have a conversation laugh
However, I had no pain at all yay

Canceling the half this weekend, still running a 5k. Arthur is up to no good and I cant run distance for time right now, and if I did I wouldn't be able to do the 5k the next day. The 5k has a lot more meaning to me and is an annual event for us since its for celiac. Just hoping Arthur gives me 25 minutes of freedom so I can hold and do this one for time making a 5k pr for my spring race season.

Good luck in your 5K. It's sad that you can't do the half, but live to race another day!! Best of luck to you and I hope you have good health on race day!

I must admit my training hasn't been going as well as I wanted between the rain and just being down right beat after work.

I was talking to a friend from work yesterday who I don't see often (she works the night shift). She was telling me about this running program that she joined last year to help her get started. It's a 10 week program and it ends with a 5K. I checked them out online and the program sounds pretty good. They didn't have a program schedule posted online. I'm going to call them tomorrow if I have time or else on Saturday.

OK, that is so cool! What app is that?? I have Verizon, and an IPhone too. I need that!

Now that you burned 426 calories, you can scarf down about a half of a Disney cupcake and break even. Smile

Neither has mine, but Tori and I signed up for the Enchanted 10K in February so I need to get my rear in gear! 6.2 miles, much less scarey than 13.1.

I was doing really well, running at least twice a week and then stuff happens (my sister had a baby - my first niece, my husband started working two jobs - so I felt like I should be doing more cooking etc. the weather has been unpredictable and I have been working more too) All excuses, I know, but I haven't been for a run for 3 weeks! So no matter what, I am going tomorrow. What I would like to know from you experienced runners is do I pick up from where I left off with my 5k training programme or do I skip back a couple of levels to get back into it? I would love some advice.

Ugh. I'm injured. Sad I tried to work through it myself, but I am finally calling for an appointment with the sports med doc tomorrow.

This means my September marathon is out (and I'm out the $95 fee), and who knows how long I'll be working on rehab. I have to keep reminding myself that short term break = long term health. I'm so very very frustrated right now.

Go back a few levels. You probably still have a fair amount of fitness from your previous training and will be able to progress very quickly, however, jumping back in where you left off could lead to an overuse injury (doing too much too fast). Going back and working your way back to where you fell off will feel frustrating, but listen to your body. If you go back a couple levels and feel it's too easy, maybe skip forward a little until you feel like it's just enough of a challenge. Without looking back up the posts, if I recall correctly, you're targeting the F&W fest race, so you still have plenty of time. I understand where you're coming from - after my half in April I took a "few days" off - turned into almost 6 weeks. Had to hit the restart button much further back than my brain and pride would have liked, but I know ultimately, I'll get back up to "speed" (HA - pun intended - ain't nothing fast about me when I'm out running!!).

Ugh. Best of luck for a speedy recovery. I hope it's nothing too serious!! Any chance you can sell your bib for the Sept race to get back your entry fee??

Miss Mikki, I do the same thing. When life gets in the way I just back up some and start building up again. Same when I go on vacation. I come home and back up some , build back up to where I was.

Taratru, sorry, hope you get better soon.

Hi all, im in the UK and have just started training for my first 5k in October, my aim is the tower of terror 10 mile in Oct 2014, iv been using Jeff Galloways 5k app and so far I'm still alive!! I'v just been diagnosed with sciatica in my left leg/hip but a change of trainer to 2 proper running shoes seems to have helped a lot.

Hi PrincessFiona!! Galloway's training program is awesome!! I still use his method. I think you'll find that you are able to go further than you would have guess based on his walk/run technique!! Keep us posted on how your training goes!!

I've finally gotten back on track and did an 8K this morning to raise money for a school in our area. A couple of good things came out of it (other than the fact that I didn't die running 5 miles in the humidity). Stood in the potty line with a couple of ladies who have run Princess and Coast to Coast. Sigh. I think I'm going to have to sign up. Someone at work put the thought in my head earlier this week and I broke down and priced it out. Need to make a decision soon, but chatting with the ladies today really pushed me in the "you can't take $$ with you when you're gone, but you can be buried with a medal" direction (thanks to my sister for that lovely little sentiment).

I joined a gym yesterday. I went after work and met with a trainer. I thought I was going to die. I'm so out of shape. I'll go three to four times a week right after work so I don't have any excuses once I get home. This will help me lose the extra LBs and increase my spead and distance. They have a pool so I'll swim one day a week to mix it up a bit.

After the work out, he reviewed the personal training program they have (for an additional fee of course) which I declined. He's going through the book you get with the personal training and stops on the part on nutrition. He says to me that with this information I can eat heathier when I'm in Florida. I just laughed and said "I don't make dining reservations six months in advance so I can eat healthier while I'm in Disney". Smile

I missed all last week of running. It's too hot yuck I'm not a fan of the heat so I just can't bring myself to run. The heat looks like it's staying around for this week too so I'm not sure how the running is going to go.

Good plan, JoAnn! Keep us posted on your progress!

Spook - I hear you. We meet to run at either 6 or 630 on Sundays to beat the heat and even that is not working. I always thought I preferred running in warm weather but I'm changing my mind! We all just keep reminding each other that it will be hot and humid at Disney, so we have changed our motivational saying to "just do it, even if it sucks!"
