Best resort for a couple

My wife and I are thinking about coming to Disney for 3 or 4 nights and then doing a cruise afterwards. Just wondering the major differences between resort levels. We are used to staying at hotels like sheraton, Hilton, Weston, and four seasons and AIs in the Caribbean like RIU and Grand Bahia Principe.

Would moderate be approximately equivalent?

Also would 2 or 3 full days be enough time to at least get a taste of Disney?

Hey Bamelin! Moderate would probably not be the equivalent. Disney has a somewhat different scale. In Disney resorts the theme is paramount so in some ways a moderate would be superior to a typical Hilton, but in others it would be inferior, if that makes sense. Price-wise however that would probably be the equivalent. Some typical differences might be that you'll have more interesting settings, but probably less service than you'd get at a Sheraton. I wouldn't necessarily say its "better" or "worse," just different. Does that make any sense?

As far as 2-3 full days I'd say it's enough to get a "taste" of Disney but there will definitely be a lot left you'll want to see. I think 3 days is a good duration to figure out if it's for you or not.

Also, welcome to the boards!

Gee, Bamelin first let me welcome you to the BEST Disney forum on the net. Secondly great question but really a hard one to answer but here is MY take on it. I would think that 3 or 4 days would be the minimum needed to get you acclimated to WDW. Have you ever been before? Then as far as accomodations go my reccomendation for the first time and using your past travel sites as a guide, I would go with an all in one building type of resort such as Animal Kingdom Lodge (Jambo house) or Wilderness Lodge. Both are considered Deluxe hotels but not as expensive as Grand Floridian or the Contemporary. And they come with all the perks of a Disney based hotel, extra magic hours etc. as far as Moderates go there are many great ones, one that comes to mind is Port Orleans, French Quarter. I am sure that you will get more responses and ideas so fell free to tell us all the details that you are curious about. Another two hotels that comes to mind is Swan & Dolphin Hotels both on property but NOT Disney owned & operated.

Thank you for the welcome and responses!

I've never been to Disney but have always wanted to go as a kid. Now I'm older but still a kid at heart! I'd like to go for longer but we really need the downtime we hope to get on the cruise.

Wife and I are both foodies, so we are VERY interested in the Disney dining scene. We realize we probaly will barely be at the resort being at the parks all day so it doesn't have to be ultra luxury or anything (we will get that on the cruise afterwards) but we don't want to be in the Disney equivalent of motel 8 either!

Just a comfy bed and clean room really with easy access to the parks (we are not driving) and access to the disney dining plans.

Welcome!

The Disney dining is great. We talk about food on these boards ALL the time.

If you are looking for something that is a little more quiet in the moderate I would say Port Orleans French Quarter - that is where we were going to stay on our honeymoon until they added the Buy 4 get 3 free promo and the price of the deluze was too good to pass up!

I would say the Value o aren't the best - they can be noisy, but if you don't mind it, they are a really good deal, especially if you want to save money for dining or to splurge on the cruise!

I would say either Dixie Landings or Caribbean Beach. I would almost say CB just to get you more excited about the cruise... lol

If you want cheap though... Pop Century is a good value, and its a very cool lot as well. My wife and I do Animal Kingdom Lodge, but that is a bit more if you are interested in staying in your rooms just a bit more. Also... my opinion... they have some of the best dining options available at a resort.

Pop is AWESOME for the money, but you can definitely have noise problems there.

Mase, when you guys stayed at Port Orleans did they have only twin beds? I think that's why we never wind up staying there.

Did you mean Dixie Landings? If so... yeah. When we were there it was two twin beds in the room. Now... that was when I was a teen.

We are definitely considering Caribbean Beach to put us in the right frame of mind for the cruise Smile

Caribbean Beach is a great choice!

Brad - We've stayed at POFQ and have gotten King beds. We have a King on order for POR, so I hope that's what we get there or I will be disappointed!

Port Orelans French Quarter is beautiful and relaxing. You can take a nice stroll after dinner or hit up a carriage ride. The atmosphere is beautiful. I usually stay at CBR but my fiance and I stayed here this past summer and loved it.

Either Port Orleans Riverside (previously called Dixie Landings)or Port Orleans French Quarter are great places to stay as a couple. If you like a woodsier feel and lots of walking paths, go with Riverside. As well, POR has many quiet pools tucked away between the resort buildings. These are indeed quieter than the main pool and have far fewer children in them.
POFQ only has one pool so it is often very busy.

Ohh I agree...either of the Port Orleans resorts and I personally love AKL. It's so dark and romantical.

I can get on board with POR and POFQ. I also love Coronado Springs -- very romantic.

For our honeymoon, we did 4 nights at Port Orleans Riverside and then a cruise! I thought it was very nice and as intimate as Disney can get.

I think those are the most "intimate" of the moderates for sure. We always stay at CSR but that's more for convenience than "niceness." Have you stayed there since?

We haven't stayed there since....keep meaning to go back! Although next trip we are leaning toward Caribbean Beach. I'll have to read more to decide! Wink

I think that depending on the time of year any resort would be good just depending on your personality. I think you could have a blast at asm as well. You make your own romance, flowers and chocolate never hurt either.

My vote would be Animal Kingdom Lodge if you can swing deluxe. Otherwise I've never done moderate, but I think Port Orleans French Quarter would be my choice.
