Droid X vs. iPhone 4?

Joe's getting ready to upgrade his phone, and is trying to decide between the Droid X and the iPhone 4.

We've done a bit of research, and have a leaning, but I was wondering if anyone here has any specific insight, pros and cons, suggestions, recommended reading.

Welcome any feedback. Thanks!

Me and Mase both have Iphone 4's and we have had Iphone's for the past several years. I really love mine for all the awesome features it has such as internet and video camera and it's just a really good phone. I can't get into the technical aspects of it and I have no experience with a droid so I can't compare the two but Mase knows all that stuff so he will be along to give you a review shortly Smile

I have not worked with the Droid X... but both my parents have a droid phone. My Dad has the Incredible I believe... so I have had to know how to use it so I can help my parents out with them. LOL... so I know the Droid interface and such so I feel I can compare the two evenly.

First off ill try to compare some of the more obvious things. First up... if your big on batteries and like control over them... then you pick the Droid. The iPhone has a battery that can not be taken out or replaced. So when the iPhone dies from no juice, then you have to recharge it before going back out. With the Droids, you can just take out your powerless battery and pop in a fresh one and your good to go. The Droids seem to last longer battery wise as well, and you have the option of putting in larger batteries as well. Now... there are options for the iPhone to make the battery last longer. Theres even some iPhone cases that have a battery built into it that will double the life of it as well. Me... I took my iPhone 4 to Disney and was fine all day. This was with normal use. Taking pictures. High Def video. Getting on Facebook and updating my status. But also in the end... my Dad still had more battery than I did. Probably when I was at 20% he would be at around 40%. But I dont think he was using his as much as mine as well. But overall I think the Droid phones do better battery wise than the iPhone 4.

The other difference are the Apps. You have the Droid Market Place I think its what its called or Google Marke Place... and the App Store for Apple. The popular apps you can usually find in both places like Angry Birds as an example. But there is a lot more apps for the iPhone than there is for the Droids, and depending on how you want to use your phone... you will love the apps. To me the clear winner is the iPhone.

The other thing is size. If I remember right... the Droid X is bigger than the iPhone 4. I could be wrong, but I think it has a much bigger screen than the iPhone 4. So this part is a bit of "ifs". To me, the size of the iPhone is just perfect. I dont have the largest of hands so touching on the menu for the iPhone is not a problem for me. I honestly dont think if you have large fingers that using the iPhone is going to hinder, but if the screen on the Droid X is bigger... then things will be easier to touch. Now... the way my Dad has his droid... I have a hard time using it. His screen is larger then mine, but his icons are smaller than mine. Just found that interesting. Also... I liked the touch screen on the iPhone 4 better than my Dads droid. My Dads felt like I was touching a touch pad mouse, where my iPhone feels like im touching really smooth glass. I dont know about the Droid X, but I love the screen on my iPhone 4.

The rest ill talk about is just how much I love my phone. Both phones literally do the same thing. Dont get me wrong. But im not a fan of the droids interface at all. I am a huge computer nerd, and the droid is HIGHLY customizable. I mean HIGHLY. You can look at one persons droid and then look at someone elses and it will look totally different. Whereas... if you look at iPhone to iPhone... the only difference you might see is different wallpapers (Unless you have your iPhone Jailbroken, then thats a totally different story, but wont go there on here). The iPhone goes more with simplicity, and even with me wanting my PC running how I want... I love the iPhones interface far far far better than the droid. I really do. My one complaint for the longest time (I have been an iPhone user since the first incarnation) was I would have 8-12 pages of apps. That would be 16 apps per page, and that is a lot of apps. So when they finally made Folders. That cured that need. I now have 3 pages. First page are my Go-To's like Calender, Photo's, Camera, Facebook, my Multimedia Folder that has like my Slingbox, Pandora and such, my News Folder and so on. You can do this as well with the droid. You can even have it to where you have specific pages to a theme. My Dad has a Disney Theme. So he would click on the theme, and it would have everything that was Disney. From his Disney Apps... to even just Disney Contacts like our DVC Agent, phone number to the AKL and so on.

My iPhone is everything to me. That may sound dumb, but I honestly dont know what I would do with out it. When I get in my car, I hook up my audio cord, and I can listen to my music on it. With it being a cell phone... I can boot up Pandora and now have Pandora in my car. I have my Tom Tom on my iPhone. I have my e-mail going through it. I dont even check my mail on my computer anymore. I just use my phone! I can watch my Cable on my iPhone with using my Slingbox. I can even access my PC's pictures, movies and tv shows out and about. Now... you can do this on a Droid. Dont get me wrong... but after working with my Dads and mine. The ease of use on the iPhone is far superior in my opinion and I am a computer junky.

Sorry for this being so long. My wife just commented saying "I have been clicking 'New Posts' and nothing is there yet. Are you writing a book?", so ill end with this. If you have any questions at all. Hit me up. When it comes to the iPhone... I know an awful lot. I got my first one and everyone was making fun of me... even my wife. She told me why would you want to have the internet on your phone? Why would you want all those options. After she spent a car ride with it... we had to get another! Its a great phone. I absolutely love mine, so if you have any questions... just hit me up.

well the other thing to think of is the provider..
are Mase and Jess on AT&T? Because if they are, their iPhones are different than verizon's.

the number one main thing is that on Verizon's network you CANNOT surf the web and be on a call at the same time! But that's true for ALL of their phones. On AT&T's network you can.

I have a Droid 2 (R2D2 version). It's similar to the Droid X.. a little smaller and it has a slide out keyboard as well. I Love the droid. But honestly, I only got it because it's R2D2 and I'm a star wars nerd.

I cant believe I forgot about that. Thats the biggest obvious thing as well. And yeah... like DD said... if your on Verizon you cant surf and talk. The majority of people say... well when would I do that? It actually happens a lot more than you think.

Also... another note on the difference between Verizon and AT&T. AT&T has much faster 3G, but Verizon makes up for it with better coverage. So that is something to think about as well.

But yeah... Jess and I have AT&T.

yeah Verizon has always been like that.. I cant send or receive a picture message while I'm on a call. TEXTS yes.. but not pics.. and of course nothing on the web.. no email, no facebook, etc. I'm used to it as I've had Verizon for.. well.. forever.. but I wish they would change it.

Wow... I dont know how many times I would be talking to Jess on the phone and would get bored and start surfing Facebook or the internet... LOL! I kid... but after 4-5 years of this... I dont think I could go do that with Verizon. I hope it changes for you guys. Its real nice.

I think the biggest issues I'd identify are:

Technical Philosophy: Apple is a walled garden and will probably abuse this more and more in the future. Some people might not care, but this always bothers me about them.

Learning Curve: I can't say why but the iPhone is MUCH more intuitive. Even though they're so similar the iPhone just seems so obvious about what to do. Once you know what you're doing they're both easy to use, but the iPhone just comes more naturally i think.

Hey Brad,
Windows phone isn't for me I don't think, it looks neat but it's basically just a windows system with the same windows vunerability, we've run a few tests on the Androids, Windows phone and iPhones, thus far the Iphone is winning out. We've managed to kill a windows phone with a trojan and bricked the android more times than I can count. I guess it all depends on what you want to do with you phone and what you expect it to be. If you want the tech specs I would be happy to help but all we do at work all day is tear apart networks and OS's and put them back together so the phones were kind of a fun side project.

DH has the HTC Google 1 and I have the HTC Google 2 (G2). They are awesome. Battery life is bad compared to my old blackberry, but I can get a bigger one if I want. Droids are great because you can use the droid marketplace, google marketplace and amazon app store. While you may not always have the iphone app exactly, there's hardly been any that I can't find a good equivilant to, or waited a few months and the droid equivilant is released. I too can listen to music, pandora, slacker, etc on my phone. The difference for us is the cost. The G2 was less after rebates than the Iphone, and being on T-mobile we have unlimited web, phone, texts, etc. so monthly rate is cheaper than verizon and at&t. Plus I can talk and web at the same time with no issue. I don't have video chat, but I can live without that.
I used to have to reboot my blackberry almost daily, I've only had 2 apps fail on me and they immediatly turned back on. I don't even know how to reboot the droid G2, lol.
