Golfing and Tennis in Disney World

Hi guys -- soon-to-be DH and I have wanted to start doing more "active things" together to try to offset some of this middle-age spread. Ahem. wink Has anyone taken advantage of the golf courses or tennis courts at Disney? Do you have to pay for court time at the tennis courts, or be staying at the resort where they are to play?

Thanks yay

Great question.

We've got some great Golf links on the main section of this site.

As for tennis, I have no idea! I would love to play some tennis in Disney World, but the only place I KNOW they have courts is Grand Floridian. I'll have to do some research to see if you have to be staying there to use them...

Here we go--From the Disney Website:

"Play tennis on a wide selection of court options designed to make your sporting experience a swinging good time.

Improve your game through professional programs and clinics. Services are structured around your playing ability. Call (407) 621-1991â for reservations, pricing and information about our exciting Tennis offerings. They're a smash!

Wow! Thank you so much for all the info! I had no idea there were so many tennis courts available. Guess I'll call Disney and see if there's a charge (something tells me that reservations = charge...)

I take it I am the only duffer here? And I use the term 'duffer' very literally!

I play a little, Mike. Very non-competitively, and I haven't yet had the chance to play at WDW. Have you? Any suggestions for courses?

I play what I refer to as 'Woods Golf' (no...not like Tiger). Thats where I spend most of my time! I have not played any of the courses...not even the putt putt ones. But I was thinking on our next trip, Donna (who has never played before but has her own set of clubs) and I might take a day to play...at least the par 3 course. I thought it might be a good way to break up the week...

I have been known to play a round of golf or two, though I guess I play "Sand and Water Golf" if you're playing "Woods Golf" Mike! silly The golf/tennis thing (and the racecar thing) are activities I haven't done in Disney World -- and it's shocking to think there are things I haven't done; that place is HUGE and has so much to offer -- but I agree that playing a morning of par 3 golf would be really nice. Finish it off with a great breakfast at the Grand Floridian or something.

Actually, I was thinking of an afternoon round at the Par 3, then going across the street to the Polynisian. The only thing that bothers me about that is the Par 3 is a walking course only. I am afraid of the stank we may emit...lol

Just bring some spray deodorant in DWs purse! laugh Or go to the GF and tell the front desk you need some deodorant -- they've always got that kind of stuff for guests. No reason to interrupt plans cause of stank!

I'm always surprised by how many people who haven't played have clubs. How did she wind up with hers?

I bought her clubs because, like Bali, I wanted to try something we could do together. Donna is very active and likes outdoor stuff. We have used them in the yard with a golf net I have. But that is as close as we have come to actually playing golf...so far.

Then you MUST play. Remind me -- do you live close enough to drive? It would really STANK to have to fly the clubs to FL.

From our front door to the entrance of Animal Kingdom Lodge (where we stayed) took exactly 5 hours. Not a bad drive and included a potty break just outside Orlando.

I go through phases with golf. Right now I'm in an "out" phase. I'm not sure I'd ever want to spend that much time at WDW doing something I can do anywhere. Are their courses on par with other WDW experiences? (No pun intended)

Dsoup...I agree...why do something at Disney you can do anywhere (it's not like we don't have 40 golf courses around here!)? EXCEPT...it's Disney! And that's also why I would rather just play the Par 3...doesn't take as much time. The quest I would have would be to see if the had any 'hidden Mickey's' on the course.

That can be perfect or horrible depending on how you look at it laugh Five hours is just long enough that you can't make a day trip, but short enough that you could eek out a long weekend trip on a whim Wink
