Mickey and the Oscars

So...Toy Story 3 managed to get their Oscar nod for Best PIC! But Tangled didn't even get the nomination for best animated feature. I think it should've - it is a really beautiful and entertaining movie, and a fresh take on a fairy tale (without turning the genre on its head, like Shrek did.) What are your thoughts? Is TS3 good enough to take it all?

I'd love to see TS3 win, but it will have tough competition from The Kings Speech. I don't remember the last time a 'kids' movie won overall.

I really don't think it can possibly win overall. It shouldn't be eligible. It will take ANimated, so no way will it take Best Picture too. And while I loved TS3, Inception or The king's Speech deserves the Best Picture award more.

TS3 won't win best movie. It's pretty much a lock for Animated (I mean, how can it not be - the other two films weren't nominated for Best Movie). I think they should either stop nominating animated movies for Best Movie, or they should get rid of the animated category altogether. Having both means a slot is being eaten up in best movie by a film which, while worthy, has no shot at winning.

Tony, I just did a search of Oscar winners. The last movie that won best movie that was rated lower than PG-13 was Driving Miss Daisy in 1989 - hardly a "kids" movie.

The last movie I would consider a genuine "kid friendly" movie to win would be either Rocky in 1976 or, if that doesn't work, Oliver! in 1968.

In fact, the last movie to be rated PG-13 and win was Crash in 2004 - also not a very kid friendly movie!

Tony, The King's Speech is my very next film to see. Picking a nite soon and sneaking away to the cineman to watch it in peace. Can. Not. WAIT.

Why do you think Pixar campaigned so hard to get the Best Pic nod? I'm with y'all - I don't think it can, or necessarily should, win. But I've seen at least one article - one of those end of the year jobbies - that said it was, hands down, the best pic of 2010. I believe it was in Time Magazine. Do you think that it's just a matter of Disney, Pixar, or whoever, wanting the genre to get more respect? Because I think most people understand that "kid's" movies aren't just for kids. I mean, everyone on this board (I'd be willing to bet) has been to a theatre to see at least one Disney animated feature sans kids. Hmmm..puzzling.

OH - and rereading my comments before...I meant no disrespect to Shrek. It was fresh and entertaining, too. I just wouldn't put Tangled beside it, since I think Tangled adheres a little more closely to the fairytale formula. But I love the wit and modernity of it - Tangled, I mean. And Rapunzel, conflicted? As a good girl who had (and has!) a hard time breaking rules, I so identified Smile

Lol..what if it lost animated but won best picture? What would that mean for the animated movie that did win?

Haha..anyways..fantasy time is over. I agree it probably won't win best movie. I don't even really think it's the best Toy Story movie..although it did make me cry..anyway..I agree animated is probably a lock and I don't even know who those nominees are. I am just looking forward to the clothes!

...Oliver! in 1968.

Thanks. 43 years ago, no wonder I can't remember (I'm not 40 until later this year)

Oh! Tony! We're almost the same age (I'm sure you saw my whining about turning 4-0 in November...but in case you didn't Smile )

I'll admit...I've only watched part of TS3, and that was while I was simultaneously working. Maybe I'll pop it in and watch it today. But it seems to me that if any of the TS films were going to win, it would be the first, when you had all the freshness of the characters being new + the good storytelling. Anyway...sounds like we're in agreement. And I love your question, Bella - I guess the winner of the Animated Feature would then storm the stage and demand the Best Pic award from TS3 in some kind of black-tie wrestling match! Would be entertaining, anyway.

Now THAT would make the Oscar's more interesting!

Dsoup - what would win? TS3 or TS3? biggrin I have actually heard "How to Train Your Dragon" is good, but I haven't seen it. I don't know about the other one...

Caitie and I really didn't like How To Train Your Dragon that much. We thought it was kind of obvious. The visuals were pretty good, but seemed designed for 3D - they weren't any better than any other movie in 2D, and in fact I thought the dragon looked kind of -- blobby.

I would have easily nominated Tangled or MegaMind over HttyD -- though I haven't seen Despicable Me yet.

We watched HTTYD at school the day before Christmas Break..my kids loved it but I just thought it was OK. They got to pick what we watched.

Not having seen HTTYD - and now I think we'll get it on Netflix and DD can watch it while I work - I guess the big diff is the storytelling. It takes more than just snazzy animation. Or it should, anyway.

Hmm I really thought HTTYD was awesome, I didn't even want to see it at first but Hubby did so we went. Despicable Me was really good to, really funny. Sadly I haven't seen TS3 or Tangled yet. I really have catching up to do.

I really enjoyed HTTYD. I will definitely say that the plot of both Megamind and HTTYD weren't terribly complex, but I still really enjoyed them. Not really on par with a Pixar flick, but still really enjoyable. I'm finding that I'm starting to really prefer to see primarily animated stuff.

I've never seen HTTYD. Has anyone seen cloudy with a chance of meatballs? I was surprised at how good that one was.

Not as good as the best of pixar though, obviously Smile

I have to say that in recent years I haven't looked forward to many movies as much I have Pixar movies.

Me too. That and Harry Potter. I probably need to grown up, but it's just that I can pretty much guarantee that Pixar and Harry Potter will always be enjoyable!

Peg I actually think that the older I get the less I want too much unpleasantness in my film. When I was in my twenties I wanted "complex" cinema and really "hard" movies. I went to art film-houses all the time. Now my time is precious and I just want something that makes me feel good without making me feel like I was pandered to. Pixar, some Dreamworks films (How to Train Your Dragon, Megamind) and Harry Potter are the things that spring to mind that I look forward to.

I agree with Brad..but I hate thinking when I am watching a movie. Dave likes all these intense movies..but sometimes I feel like I got beat up after I've watched them. I just want to eat gummy bears and giggle...and that makes me sound 5.

I agree. Life can be hard. I go to the cinema for entertainment. I don't want mindless, but I don't want depressing, either.
