WDW runDisney event trip planning...

** non-runDisney input is welcomed as well **

2-3 weeks after the 2011 Wine & Dine Half-Marathon I started thinking ahead to 2012 and 2013. I knew I wanted to run the Wine and Dine and follow that up a few weeks later with the Detroit Marathon (it includes running over the Detroit river into Canada then back to Detroit via the tunnel). As Thanksgiving approached I really started to have second thoughts about the Detroit Marathon, despite living in Michigan I really really HATE running in the cold. I really started to think about making my first full marathon at WDW in 2013... once I mentally committed to that idea I started toying with the idea of doing the Goofy. It seemed like a good goal to work towards and I had a year to prepare. Then Disney changed everything, when they created the 10 mile Tower Run first weekend in October and move the Wine & Dine back to November.

Now I'm conflicted, the October date, for me, works well with my full marathon training while the Wine & Dine in November messes things up a bit. However, November has the Christmas decor and honestly I enjoy Christmas a-thousand-and-one times more than Halloween... sshhh don't tell Ricky Brigante that.

Now I'm fully committed in my mind to complete the Goofy... but I also want to experience the Christmas season at WDW again (I was able to experience a few days in early January of 09).

So what should I do... skip Disney in 2012 and use that saved money for a room/resort upgrade? Or go down for the Wine & Dine and enjoy the Christmas decor and energy and hope that doesn't throw me off of the Goofy in 2013?

Edit: When can we get that WDW For Grown Ups runDisney forum category?

I think you'll do fine doing both Wine & Dine and Goofy. It sounds like you're committed, so I wouldn't worry about that part. I will say that I'm right there with you that it's a bummer that they move the Wine & Dine to November! I actually prefer Halloween and we're always there at the start of F&W to cover all the stuff. This means that we'd have to do a separate trip for W&D. I'd say if you prefer Christmas though I vote you do F&W AND Goofy! (Easy for me to say, right?)

Isn't the Goofy that crazy event where you run a half one day and the full marathon the next?

How would running the W&D throw you off for the Goofy? I'm not a runner, but I would think it would be good for your training.

Mitch - I say go for it! I have another friend who just completed the Goofy - so inspiring!

I'm a little curious too - how would running the W&D in Nov impact your marathon training? I'd love to benefit from your expertise Smile

I think I'll scale back a bit this year. I'm not sure yet what distance runs I'll do. I want to get really good and comfortable with short runs, and then go from there. I think concentrating on getting some pounds off will definitely help in the long term goal running department.

It's too bad that Detroit race is in the cold - it sounds really neat!

Running in the cold is a no-go for me. Fortunately it's not cold down here very much.

The Detroit Marathon sounds amazing, but no way could I do anything in the cold!

My daughter and I don't actually run, we just walk as fast as my legs will go, but we love it when it's cold!

This year we went out and bought some cold weather workout gear and it's been wonderful. Much better than last year when we just layed summer gear. Long sleeved wicking shirts are the best! Many times I even end up shedding my outer jacket as I work up some body heat. About 40 degrees is perfect walking weather to me. She and I went out last week at about 35 and it was a little much, especially in the area that the wind hit us.

When I look at the various training plans for marathon (and a few ultra) training most of them have a rest week right around the time wine & dine weekend. I suppose I could, and most likely will just push that week up... but I really want to try sticking to a plan for the duration.... I suppose to I shouldn't try and using a prebuilt plan but find a running coach to help fine tune the perfect plan.

This year the weather has been fairly nice in Michigan thus far... but still I just can't do the cold weather runs out doors... the 2011 Detroit Marathon was mid to upper 30's windy and rain. NOT FUN.

Lizzy_B... I've found listing to a few podcast on running help to boost my confidence. They helped me realized every run has value, I always take something away even the short slow ones where I feel I let myself down had value. The only way to fail is to let the bad days win and never go back out. If you want to go focus on shorter runs thats great... you can do more races Smile 5K tend to be cheaper and more abundant... if you feel up to it try a 5k trail run Smile

I got my waivers for the Royal Family 5K in my email today! I'm so excited!!
The down point, line up is at 6:15 am, which I was expecting but it was still a bit of a shock to see!

I did the 2012 Goofy, and I think that a half marathon in October would be an excellent part of your training program. 13.1 miles at that point of your training is a good place to be. You'll be stretching your long runs gradually over the next eight weeks until you max at about 2-3 weeks from race day. From there it's tapering time.

Also, since you are doing Goofy, you will want to get your body trained to run long runs on back to back days. For example, over the first three weekends in December I ran 8 miles on Sat and 16 on Sunday on weekend 1, 9/18 over weekend 2 and 10/20 over weekend 3.

Having said all this, it sounds like you are doing a lot of research as well as getting a personal coach to help you design a training program, which is a great idea.

Good luck, and let me know if you have any questions!

Jim
