Tips to Revive Tired Legs During Travel

When I've tracked my mileage around Walt Disney World, I find I walk between 5 and 10 miles a day. That's a lot of miles for guests that live in a generally sedentary society. It's no doubt that walking around the parks all day can lead to sore, achy, tired legs. We've gathered together some home remedy tips to revive your legs and keep you on your feet so that you can keep on touring!

Stay Hydrated: As we've noted before one of the best ways to stay healthy on vacation and keep your body working it peak condition is to stay hydrated! Drinking plenty of water is one of the very best defenses against muscle soreness.

Peppermint Lotion: With their anti-inflammatory and muscle soothing properties, peppermint lotions are great for soothing your tired feet and legs. Liberally apply lotion for a rejuvenating boost to your legs and feet. My favorite is Burt's Bees Mama Bee Leg and Foot Creme.

Take a Soak in the Hot TubTake a Soak in the Hot Tub
Hit the Hot Tub: Soak your tired legs at the end of the night to get the blood circulating. The warmth of the water relaxes the mind and promotes the healing of tense muscles. While soaking in the soothing water, slowly stretch out your stiff muscles by alternate flexing your feet (point toes and feet up towards your knees) and then pointing them (point toes and feet away from you).

Elevate at Night: Elevating your legs helps relieve the pressure that has built up after a day in the parks. Propping up your legs with a few extra pillows at night helps the blood and fluids that have pooled in the feet to flow back to your heart. I usually snag the couch cushions from our studio for this purpose, but if you don't have a couch, give mousekeeping a call and ask for a few extra pillows.

Massage: A good rub will help restore circulation to tired muscles and keep you moving. If you are experiencing cramps, then one of the best methods is to dig your fingertips deep into the muscle that is cramping and hold it for 15-20 seconds. Looking for a little more pampering for your legs? Many of the Walt Disney World Deluxe Resorts off massage centers in conjunction with their spa or fitness center.

The best way to avoid tired legs at Disney World is to start walking for exercise before your vacation. If you're in the habit of logging 3 to 5 miles several times a week at home, walking around the parks won't be that big of a deal. Your legs might be a little tired at the end of the day, but after a good night's rest they'll be refreshed and ready to go.

I always train before heading down to WDW, but for some reason down there I retain water like crazy and my ankles swell up like you would not believe. Elevating them at night even for 15-20 minutes is a MUST for me.
