Disney Acquires Marvel Comics for $4billion

I'm not quite sure what to think about this...

Will Universal still be able to use the licensing agreement, or will Spiderman the Ride move to Disney Hollywood Studios?

This seems a bit awkward to me, though I can see why Disney would do it, if I try to view it from strictly a business standpoint.

Disney has acquired the rights to other, non traditional "Disney" characters in the past (Muppets, Power Rangers, Star Wars) but have kept them relatively low key, regarding their usage in the theme parks.

I agree with Admin though; the fact that this themeing already exists in Universal's Theme Parks adds quite a wrinkle to this development. Not to mention the motion picture franchises using these characters, specifically SpiderMan.

If they go low-key, it somehow seems like a waste; then again, I'm not sure if these are the kinds of characters I want to see in the parks. For me, it's a wait-and-see game.

I could be wrong, but my guess that Disney is more interested in using these characters for the box office draw they'd acheive in the cinemas, and not to put them in a parade down Main St. USA.

Imagineer, I hope you're right. Then again, if they can use those characters to do some stuff in the Studios, it might not be a bad thing. The park could use a boost and revitilization - I could see them changing the Indiana Jones show finally, or maybe adding to the Great Movie Ride.

I think to some degree the Marvel characters have been somewhat degraded in my mind. They're 2nd tier, like Bugs Bunny for example, so I think it would be very strange to see them on Disney properties. The Marvel movies had a nice run going for a while and I think the Iron Man franchise is still on track. Very interesting news.

You know, I couldn't put my finger on it, but that's the general feeling I get as well. I just don't feel that those characters fit into the "Disney Magic."

@Imagineer: I find that I'm hoping you're right that they relegate these characters to the box office.

@TeacherDrama: Though I CAN see them adding quite a bit to the Great Movie Ride, or taking the Power Rangers spot in the Streets of America in DHS.

Very interesting. While this does bring up some concerns for me, I have faith Disney will do things right.

I'm fascinated to see how this will play out, especially on the Universal Studios/Disney theme parks scape.

Well, it's a safe bet that Disney isn't going to let Universal use their property out of the kindness of their heart:) On the contrary, I would think that played a factor (not the primary, but A factor) in the decision to purchase Marvel in the first place.

Do you think so? It seems so petty! laugh

I was reading some analysis of the conference call between disney and marvel and it seems like Disney's pretty much in charge here. I wonder how marvel was doing financially...

I cross my fingers on that, mate!
