pin trading for grown ups =]

oh, and one more topic, since i'm thinking of using my free birthday fun card to get a pin collection going -- settle an argument for me

i want to do pins.
i love disney, but am not so much a fan of children. i put up with them, cause well, sure, i guess they have a right to be there as much as me =]

but here's the thing, my boyfriend says, if i get a pin collection and get a lanyard going, i must be willing to accept the fact that any kid can come up to me and expect to trade.

ok, sure, i did say i don't care for them, but of course i won't be mean to kids. BUT, what if one comes up expecting to trade some lame pin for my awesome limited edition star wars weekend passholder pin (lol!)

am i jerk if i refuse? are kids going to be crying and am i going to have mad moms and dads yelling at me??
maybe i should just skip the pin collection?

thanks for any advice in advace =]

According to the pin etiquette, you are never obligated to trade something if you don't want to. Just indicate to the child that that pin is a bit more of value and you would like to trade for something similar.

You can prevent this by not wearing such pins on your lanyard and keep it in your bag. I always wear "throw-away" pins on my lanyard, and any child wanting to trade with me will always get what he/she wants, even if the pin I get is something I already have or don't want.

I don't do pins, but welcome Lori!

Is it true that cast members must swap with you anytime they are requested to do so?

Not really.

Again, the pin etiquette describes what can and can't be done. If the cast member is not busy doing his/her duties, then he/she can be asked for a trade. He/she will exchange pins if the pin you are giving him/her is something that the cast member doesn't already have on his/her lanyard. Furthermore, only a child can trade with a cast member wearing a green lanyard or dangling patch. Anyone can trade with a cast member wearing the blue lanyard or dangling patch.

There ya go. If there has to be a section on "pin etiquette", then its all too complicated for me.

Lori,

I've been pin trading for years, and wear my lanyard on almost every visit to the parks. I just wear "traders" on my lanyard - that is, pins that I want to get rid of (in trade).

99% of my trades are with Cast Members. Every now and then I'll trade with another guest, but usually only after a conversation about pins ensues while waiting in line for an attraction or something. NEVER in my life has a random kid come up to me and asked to trade. And if it were to happen, you have every right to tell him that you aren't interested in trading at the moment. Kids need to learn about rejection anyway. laugh You'd be in the right to refuse, per the Pin Etiquette rules.

Anyway, I encourage you to get involved in Pin Trading. It's a very rewarding, if not addictive and expensive, hobby. You'll find in time that you'll probably settle into a certain type of pin that interests you most. It's just too vast a field of pins to try and collect them all. For instance, I collect attractions, resorts, theme parks, Limited Editions, and DVC and AP exclusives.

silly So true!

I rarely bring my pins out to the parks, but there are a few that are sentimental that I would never trade. JUST SAY NO! Wink

Like bali, wife and I never bring our pins to the park. We always start out with empty lanyards and by the end of our trip the lanyards are full. In the years we have been doing this we have only bought 2 duplicates and those we did bring them on our next trip and traded with CMs.

There are SO many different pins that for me quite simply, you see them at the park, they grab your attention, and since I leave them at home you forget that you have them, and you buy them and BINGO!! when you get back home you discover you already have them. We can remember most of them but at least for me not all of them. Thus they become trading material.

I don't have enough to have duplicates, but I have realized that when you find a pin you like, you just HAVE to have it!
