Vacationing at Disney VS. Everywhere Else!

Am I the only person who deals with this?

My family are all pretty much Disney fans. We grew up coming to FL for vacation, and Disney has always been a part of that, ever since the resort opened. But others, especially DH's family, don't "get it." They seem to think it's better to go to Very Important Places and See Important Things - like the Grand Canyon, Mt Rushmore, the World's Biggest Ball of Twine, and various historical places. They consider Disney - gasp! - "fake."

Now - don't get me wrong - all of these things have value (well, maybe not the twine.) But I think there's a balance - some Disney, some Other-Than-Disney. What do you think? Do you struggle with these types of folks in your life? Do you divide your vacay time between Disney and, well, everything else? Or are you all Disney, all the time, and to heck with anyone else's opinion?

We've always been "to heck with anyone else's opinion" people, but we do split our time when we can. We just love to travel, so we like to explore other countries and cultures. The biggest problem we face is that when we travel, we like to "embed" ourselves in a culture for a while, so the trick is getting a few weeks off and the money together to do that.

For us, Disney has everything we like about a vacation, so we never struggle with it. I have had one family member say "Why would you go there more than once?" - so she goes into the "they don't get it" bucket.

But in the end, we don't give a hoot what anyone says - give us our Disney! biggrin

It's the same with my hubby and I. We keep thinking "maybe we'll go somewhere else this time..." and always end up back at Disney.

WDW is the only place we go. We love it, what else can we say. Buy the time we leave, we have our next trip planned.

Usually before that even. You've had that Poly trip planned for quite a while, haven't you?

We often get, "when are you going to go someplace real?" Excuse me, but since when is wdw not real?

Though we do travel to lots of other places too when we can.

The thing is..I want to go other places too! I want to go to Europe. Take a beach vacation to the Carolinas or Hawaii. Take cruises everywhere. I obviously love Disney, but I enjoy other kinds of vacations too!

I love going other places, but WDW had made me lazy because it's so easy!

Where's Tony? He should be able to chime in here since he and Mrs. Tony take so many gorgeous trips to Greece!

you called laugh

We've actually been to the same hotel in Greece about 7 times and often have people ask if we get bored with it or ever want to see other places. When travelling with kids it was important to know where everything was and that it was safe for them and the hotel in Greece was perfect. We're still not bored with it but it would be nice to see other places.

Back to Disney... You're more likely to get the "isn't that for kids" attitude from those that don't get it in the UK. We have friends who have been to Orlando/Disney and the surrounding area about 10 times, no one ever says to them "what again?" It's generally recognised that there is so much crammed into the area that it would take years of vacations to do it all. We have people ask if we are going this year or when are we going again.

I guess I need three holidays a year really, Greece, Disney and somewhere new. Unfortunately time off work and money will not allow it.

So do you make it to Greece every year?

Ah there are simply too many places in the world that I want to explore, so I'm afraid I don't spend every holiday at Disney! Saying that I do need a relatively frequent Disney fix, and in the last 3 years the only Disney park I haven't been to is Disneyland California! So Disney often manages to work it's way into my trips somehow...

We actually feel a little bit bad about how much of our vacation winds up being in Disney World. There are lots of other places we want to go, but WDW is so easy and convenient.

Good morning!

I generally try to strike a balance between Disney and other places. Since my last trip to WDW and the Mousefest cruise on the Disney Wonder in December, 2007: I've been to British Columbia for family reunions (August 6-16, 2009 and August 6-15, 2010); to the Great Wolf Lodge in Scotrun, PA in the Pocono Mountains (May 11-14, 2008); to Pittsburgh for the Phillies-Pirates series at PNC Park (June 30-July 5, 2010); to Washington, DC for the Phillies-Nationals series at Nationals Park (July 30-August 2, 2010); and I'll go on the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line's ship Enchantment of the Seas for a 12-night southern Caribbean cruise from February 28-March 12, 2011. A Disney trip is now in the "idea" stage.

I think I'm in the "both" category, too, which is why it's so darn nice to live here...Disney is sort of our weekend playplace, and they we can vacation elsewhere. Now, if I could just get the inlaws to understand there's value to both...

Heck, who cares what they think?

Where are my mouse ears? Ah, that's better. mickey

Lizzy, that sounds like the perfect situation apart from not really needing to stop in any of the Disney hotels. I guess you can still wander round them though?

I think Jim puts me to shame!! You're always going exciting places!

Tony -- I'm in 100% agreement that we should all be taking 3 holidays per year: one to Disney, one to our other favorite place, and one to somewhere new. awesome

Living in the US makes it hard, though, because we have to fly 3 hours to even get out of the country! And the 7-11s in Utah are pretty much the same as the 7-11s in Iowa...not all that many "cultures" to explore around here...

Yes, and we frequently do. I like to call it, "pretending I'm on vacation." Smile
