Walt Disney World Contributes $15K to Re-Election Campaign

Walt Disney World and politics? Who knew the two could be mentioned in the same sentence. Recently, Walt Disney World gave $15,000 to Republican State Representative Scott Plakon.

Rep. Plakon, who is a two-term incumbant running for re-election in a central Florida legislative race, was given the campaign donation by Disney last week through his "Floridians for Prosperity & Economic Liberty" fundraising committee.

There's a bit of history between Plakon and Disney. Plakon has sponsored at least two bills in the past with ties to Disney. One bill Plakon sponsored in 2009 "kept theme-park building plans exempt from Florida's public-records law." Another bill sponsored last year sought to repeal a contract law which, according to the Orlando Sentinel, "was meant to protect independent sales agents by giving them legal leverage over companies that are late or refuse to pay promised commissions. Disney, which uses many third-party travel agents who earn commissions, said the law was unnecessary and burdensome." Plakon and Disney also are against the expansion of gambling.

Said Plakon of Disney's support of him and his campaign:

I'm a business guy and I'm opposed to the expansion of gambling. With those two things alone, it shouldn't be a surprise that Disney would support me.
