To Flip Flop? Or not to Flip Flop?

I've seen a shoe discussion around here before. My question is - what do you wear for oh so long days in the park? Flip flops? Or are you like me, and you need a "real" shoe for long days on your feet?

Anyone in the "real shoe" camp find a sandal or some other cooler shoe that's comfortable all day?

Heck no to flip flops - my feet would be killing me! I remember hearing somewhere (maybe on a WDW Today) that someone had a pedometer on at Disney and they average over six miles a day. No way will I do that in anything but sneakers!

I cant stand flip flops. The noise they create is like nails on a chalk board to me. Dont know why... but oh man they annoy me. I just use my normal shoes... lol

I have to admit, I am one of those flip flop people. It is just to darn hot to wear anything else in Disney. I have tried sneakers but can not stand more than one day in them. Now regarding the noise flip flops can make....I have heard that noise but not all flip flops or maybe the wearer makes that noise when wearing them. I do not or at least I do not think I do.

Sports sandals and flip flops (croc flip flops are awesome)

They always look comfortable when other people wear them. For me the kind where they go between the toes makes my toes hurt. I do have a lovely pair of beach sandals, but they're reserved for when I visit Hawaii. silly

I always wear trainers (you'd call them sneakers) with mesh fabric uppers. A friend swears by crocs and won't wear anything else.

I won't even wear flip-flops round the pool, they just never seem to stay on my feet!

I just wore my sport sandles during the day and if I went to the pool in the morning or evening I wore my flip flops.
I dont think I could wear sneakers in florida. It just gets way too hot for me.

Normally I'd say sneakers all the way, but having had major ankle reconstuction in Sept '09 I had to find flip flops with major support just so I could stand in the shower.

Orthaheal makes great flip flops that have a bit in arch support, are a thicker sole and are super comfortable. Theu also have a footbed that is longer than most flip flops and round up around your foot so they don't slide off. I haven't done wdw in them yet, but wear them (and their clog version) all the time. All of their shoes have the same footbed so you can switch up the style, but not the comfort. For a long time my heal hurt too much to wear shoes with a back so I wore those flip flops everywhere, including to the Boardwalk in Wildwood, NJ. If you've ever walked it, you know it's a LONG boardwalk (It has more rides than Disneyland.)My feet felt great (well as much as the reconstucted one can as it's still healing).
I think I'd try them in wdw.

I am a flip flop lover but my feet get sore if I wear them for to long so I wear tennis shoes at Disney

Agreed about the heat! I always wonder how people don't overheat in their running shoes. I have 2 pairs of Havaianas (a Brazillian flip flop) and they're fantastic.

I also recognize the need for a sandal with more support. I also own a great pair of sandals by ecco, but other great brands are Mephisto, Birkenstock, Clarks, Naot, and Keen. Those sandals are wonderful and are often used by people with orthotics.

I love my Merrells for the parks. Sneakers are hot, but the mesh uppers (like Tony mentioned) help.

I LOVE my Crocs flip flops - the ones with the formed rubber straps. I actually tried them once, for about half a day. Couldn't have made it all day, but they were good for a while.

I'll have to check out Orthaheal, Katrina. Living in FL, flipflops are practically required dresscode! But the really flat ones are just not comfortable to me.

JP - I think I've seen the Havaianas. They're cute!

I think all flip flops should be illegal. I HATE feet! I cant stand seeing them! I hate the summer because people wear sandals and flip flops.
I hate that people dont get the right size, and their toes hang over and grip on to the front of the flip flop. I hate that people dont take care of their feet and I can see their scaley and cracked heels. I hate that people dont see a podiatrist when they have a thick ugly black or yellow toenail. I dont want to see all that mess!

yuck.

I'll confess...it does bother me to see little kids in flip flops. From what I've read, I don't think it's good for their feet. I think Crocs are a better choice, or sneakers/trainers. But then, who asked me? biggrin

pretty much all feet. I will find something to complain about on any foot. "eww that 2nd toe is way longer than the big toe!!" or "ewww their toes look like foot fingers!" or "why do those toes curl up like that??"

Lol on the feet haters.

I have to agree flip flops aren't the most attractive shoes, but they are handy.

I'm from the south so I am in flip flops from April to October. I have the best pair of flip flops that I wore all over Disney. But just like those of you who would be uncomfortable in flip flops my feet would be killing me in tennis shoes because I never wear them. I do have some (cute) croc sandals that I wear sometimes..but not often.

I'm a California girl, so of course I love flip flops. I do occassionally wear them in the parks, but I wear sneakers more. I take my flip flops because every once in a while your feet need to breathe. I would never do a whole day in them though. I'm not that crazy.

I love sandals and finding a good pair to be able to walk in has proved challenging. Clarks makes some really great sandals that I can walk in all day without killing my back and yet they are so cute too. I have also heard that those FitFlops are good as well and they aren't like regular old flip flops. I wear my sneakers for exercising and can't wait to get them off, I've never been able to wear them in the park, but that's just me.

Everyone raves about Clarks. The last pair I tried in a store didn't do much for me. Are there particular varieties that are good?

Every pair of Clarks I have owned have been wonderful. It's just the construction of the shoe, but I don't know if men's would differ.

I am a HUGE fan of Born sandals and Merrells - my Merrells are, hands down, my ab fave shoe, and I've worn the Mary Jane style, sans socks, to the parks with few problems (a blister here or there if it's very humid or if I'm walking like someone's chasing me, but that's what First Aid's for, yes?)

Hmmm...Pumas, FitFlops, and I've heard good things about Reefs. I may never be a "flip flop in the park" kinda girl, but these might work for life outside the park.

Reefs make great sandals/flip flops! And some varieties come with a beer bottle opener built into the sole of the shoe! lol.

I have a pair of Clark's flats that I wear to work (I'm on my feet..A LOT) and they are so so comfy. I wouldn't wear them to Disney though..they are too fancy for all that.

New Balance trail runners or walkers for me, all the way. I can't conceive of anyone being able to walk more than about 100 yards in flip flops without falling out of them, and -- in my humble and very personal opinion -- no man ever born should EVER wear flip flops or other sandals where he might be seen by another human being.

I think that Mrs. Tex would agree with me as well. Getting her into flip flops except to run out for the newspaper would take a gun.

From Donald Dork:

Completely agree, and there really isn't that much a podiatrist can do about thick or deformed nails. Maybe amputation, but you can do that at home with a lawnmower.

I usually wear my sneakers. I don't wear open toed shoes (I have the feet DD hates to see LOL). I do have a pair of closed toes sandals I wear on occassion. After a while they both hurt my feet. I'm going to look in to some of the brands mentioned in this thread and see if I can find something comfortable for the trip.

I only wear flip flops to the pool.

They definitely have to be a good pair of flip flops. I only wear flip flops to WDW because I am never comfortable in sneakers.

What's funny is I love Crocs Flip Flops, the comfiest pair of shoes in the world to me. The last 2 times I have been to WDW, my Crocs flip flops have snapped there. But I still keep buying them! Wink
